A Study on the management method to increase operation efficiency for Passenger and Freight Railroad Transportation (철도 여객과 화물수송의 분리운영에 관한 소고)

  • Korean railroad has been accomplished the structural change through separating of facilities and operation of railroad in 2004. The existent government organization was transformed into the public, this caused problem of renovation of railroad management. Korean railroad has been the integrated management of passenger and freight. As putting the passenger service as a priority, freight transportation have fallen behind and not attained good sales results. Restructuring in Korean railroad would bring about considerable improvement, but still not come out of the deficit operation. To find a way out of this situation, there needs to make renovation and extend new enterprise. However, to operate the railway freight transportation more competitively, make up situation that can possess competitive power fundamentally. From this perspective, the purpose of this study is to analyze the necessity for separated operation of passenger and freight railway transportation. By doing this can expect to obtain the competition power of railway freight transportation, and is a help to build up the independent management system of railway freight transportation and secure competitive high position about other transportation systems especially road.

  • Recently the study related to life cycle cost analysis of railway structure consisted of a complex is proceeded covering several range, which is considering the methodology of efficiency and rationalization for maintenance and analysing long-time behavior of the structure of looking at standpoint from asset management and safety. But LCCA(life cycle cost analysis) of railway structure was almost impossible as there were not anything datum for maintenance plan, such as maintenance periods related to each of components(painting and corrosion of steel, and cracking of elements, etc)and maintenance proportion, despite of its 100-year history. According, for collecting data related to railway truss bridge, bridge record cards and testing safety papers, and researching question, etc are surveyed and classified for LCC Analysis. Especially, LCC assessment on the side of assets-maintenance considering about initial cost, maintenance cost, and indirect cost is constructed. Maintenance period and complementary measure rate are very important in maintenance. To decide maintenance period, Baysian updating method is applied.

  • The recent environmental protection trend requires more strict energy saving, therefore every transportation system should reduce energy consumption to the minimum value. High-efficiency operation system, energy saving and CO2 emissions shall be addressed as important issue in railway system. These issues are the most essential factors of railway, compared to major public transportation system. Recently, saving energy in the electric railway system has been studied. For such new energy saving, the Energy storage system is considered for saving energy. Energy saving is possible by efficient use of regenerated energy. Regenerated energy is recycled amongst vehicles by mean of charge and discharge corresponding to powering and braking of electric vehicle operations. This energy saving contributes to cut CO2 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling regenerated energy demonstrate significant effect on peak cut of consumption energy in railway substation. Absorption of excess energy avoids regeneration failure due to high traction voltage. This paper presents effects by applying the energy storage system to SeoulMetro Line 2.

  • A new type of girder named as Steel-Confined Prestressed Concrete Girder(SCP Girder) has been developed, which is composed of concrete, steel plate, and prestressing tendon. This girder may maximize structural advantages of these components, therefore it can be used to construct the middle or long span bridge with low-height girder. To verify the propriety of design, structural safety, and applicability of this girder, static load test was carried out. In this study, a design program was developed for practical design of railway bridge using SCP girder. And to verify the applicability of SCP girder to railway bridge, structural performance and economic efficiency based on the construction cost were compared with conventional railway bridges.

  • The dynamic performances of railway vehicles, such as ride comfort, stability and safety, have the opposite characteristics of response each other according to design changes of suspensions. For this reasons, it is necessary that multidisciplinary engineers join in design processes of the suspensions so as to satisfy the requirements of dynamic performance with design constraints. Sometimes iterative dynamic analyses are required so many times during the design processes. In this paper, the development of integrated process environments and the dynamic analyses of railway vehicles based on the environments are presented. Using agent and wrapping technologies, process managements about the work process and design parameters were set up under the distributed computing environments. Also, dynamic analyses on the sample railway vehicle were carried out and the efficiency and improvement in future work were discussed as results.

  • Railway has been pointed to the efficiency of transportation, rapid transit, and comfortable train ride. the construction of railway near the downtown area and station building are increasing for maximization of utilization and convenience. but the heavy of transportation and rapid transit lead to increase noise and vibration. the noise and vibration of railway may cause the civil appeal, decline in the serviceability and insufficiency of environmental standard. In this study, floating slab system which is one of the solution to avoid noise and vibration in railway has been introduced, and analyzed floating Slab Track into arrangement of reduction material of vibration. As a result of analysis, It was estimated the bearing installation though slab have not a negative factor and terminal arrangement of reduction material of vibration have advantage for static behavior.

  • Since urban railway transit is one of the most essential transportation systems, its power facilities must ensure high reliability and safety. Currently, urban railway operating organizations perform TBM (Time Based Maintenance) on power facilities. However, in order to improve management efficiency and system safety, CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) is preferred. Among various power facilities, mold transformers has been chosen as the object of study since it is widely used for the purpose of minimizing volume and weight, and due to safety against fire. In this paper, various transformer failure cases due to electric, thermal, mechanical and environmental factors have been collected and analyzed. In addition, investigation on national and international condition based maintenance cases and the characteristics of sensors widely used for transformer monitoring has been performed to suggest the optimal condition based maintenance technique for urban railway systems.

  • Recently, various attempts are made to increase the efficiency of railway freight transport including bulk cement, the most important transport item of railway transport market. The major seven cement companies have started common use of private bulk cement car since April 2008 for the efficiency of railway freight transport. At that time, major seven cement companies owned 75% of whole bulk cement car. Railway companies forecasted that this project will decrease the amount of cost and transport time of freight car. With these data, it analyzed the effectiveness of the joint use of freight car on actual used data.

  • This study aims to quantify the railway freight performance using various indicators, to compare it over many countries, and to evaluate efficiency of railway freight in Korea. The indicators developed in this study was classified into two categories; country-specific and company-specific indicator. The former includes freight train density, average gross train load and average haul while the latter contains revenue/ton-km, ratio of operating costs to revenue, revenue per employee, ton-km per employee, costs per ton-km and ratio of labor costs to total operating costs. The results of this study shows that Korail performance is in low efficiency due to multi-frequency small amounts transport. The productivity of railway freight in Korea represented as ton-km per employee appears to be lower than that of other oversea companies considered in this study.

A Study on the Problem Analysis and Improvement Plan for the Korean Railways Communication Networks (국내 철도 통신망의 문제점 분석 및 개선방안 연구)

  • The research about the Korean integrated wireless network for railways is in progress. The network integrates and complements the various railway functions. In addition, the network is trying to change from wire communication to radio communication. The activities for the railway frequency acquisition are also in progress for the implementation of the network. This paper analyzes the problems for the Korean railway communication networks. The problems revolve around the dispersed network structure, the limited functions, the different communication methods, the technology limitation for the communication methods, and the usage of the non-licensed band. Subsequently, we explain the current state and trend for the foreign communication of the railways. This paper suggests improvement plans for the problems and also explains the expected efficiency for the improvement plans.
