The functions of diaphragms at abutments and piers of PSC box girder railway bridge are to transfer forces from the superstructure onto bearings or columns and to stiffen the superstructure cross-section against in -plane deformation. Due to stress disturbance at diaphragm, the design for the diaphragm using conventional design method is relatively irrational than those for other structural members. And, due to contribution to boundary condition of deck slab by the diaphragm, the behavior of deck slab near the diaphragm is different from that of the deck slab obtained from two dimensional analysis of the bridge, which is basis for the design of deck slab. In this paper, three dimensional behavior of deck slab near the diaphragm of prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder railway bridge constructed by the precast span method are analyzed by using three dimensional finite element modeling and using the strut-and-tie model design of the diaphragm are presented. The modeling techniques used in this paper can be applied effectively to examine the causes of cracks at deck slab near diaphragm and to design diaphragm rationally.
In this study, by considering the rail fastening support distance and the distance between the bridge and the abutment, the behavior of concrete track installed on a railway bridge end deck and the bridge end rotation were analyzed. In order to analyze the track-bridge interaction, bridge and abutment specimens with concrete track structures were designed and used in laboratory testing. At a constant fastening support distance, an increase in the bridge end rotation caused an increase in the displacement of the rail. Therefore, the displacement of the rail directly affects the rail and clip stress. Further, it is inferred that the results of multiple regression analysis obtained using measured data such as angle of bridge end rotation and fastening support distance can be used to predict the track-bridge interaction forces acting on concrete track installed on railway bridge deck ends.
According to continuos welded rails on a bridge, temperature changes bring about the expansion of the bridge deck adding axil forces on the track. Moreover, the ballast on the bridge deck expansion joint is moved due to the bridge deck. If bridge decks are longer, the influence is greater, loosening ballast, causing track irregularities, and deteriorating passengers' comfort. Considering structure of bridge itself and tolerance of track irregularities caused by the loosened ballast on bridges, the maximum length of a deck should be less than 80m, which is the same as the standard of the French railway. In this study, an interaction between the expansion related to the bridge length and irregularity in longitudinal level referring to measurements and maintenance works performed in the high-speed railways was analyzed. This research shows that installation of sliding plate or vertical ballast stopper is not a good option since it is difficult to install. On the other hand, installation of movable fastener or gluing is easy but its influence is insignificant. To conclude, switch tie tamping or manual tamping is more effective than others.
Construction of concrete slab track is trending to increase gradually in national and international for reduction in track maintenance cost and secure of ride comfort. However, in case of railway bridge installed concrete slab track, the serviceability review of end deck should be performed for reducing the maintenance cost of track. The serviceability review of track contains that the compression force which is occurred on fastener of end bridge should be smaller than the compression force causing the deformation limit of elastic pad and the uplift force which is occurred on fastener of end abutment should be smaller than initial fastening force. Therefore, this study calculated the deflection and end rotation of the railway bridge according to the span length and stiffness of railway bridge and estimated the compression force and uplift force which are occurred on the track of end bridge using the finite element method. This study indicated the several diagrams that are contained the correlation between the behaviour of the track and the behaviour of the railway bridge. As a result, to reduce the end rotation of the railway bridge is very efficient to increase the height of railway deck.
This paper attempts to extract the fundamental dynamic properties, i.e. natural frequencies, damping ratios of the 48 m-long, $20^{\circ}$ skewed real bridge with PSC girders wrapped by a steel plate. The forced vibration test is achieved by mounting 12 Hz-capacity of artificial oscillator on the top of bridge deck. The acceleration histories at the 9 different locations of deck surface are recorded using accelerometors. From this full-scaled vibration test, the two possible resonance frequencies are detected at 2.38 Hz and 9.86 Hz of the skewed bridge deck by sweeping a beating frequency up to 12 Hz. The absolute acceleration/energy exhibits much higher in case of higher-order twist mode, 9.86 Hz due to the skewness of bridge deck which leads asymmetric situation of vibration. This implies the test bridge is under swinging vertically in fundamental flexure mode while the bridge is also flickered up and down laterally at 9.86 Hz. This is probably by asymmetric geometry of skewed deck. A detailed 3D beam-shell bridge models using finite elements are performed under a series of train loads for modal dynamic analyses. Thereby, the effect of skewness is examined to clarify the lateral flickering caused by asymmetrical geometry of bridge deck.
The open deck steel bridge is the most common type in railway bridges. Steel I-shaped girders are connected with sleepers directly without ballast and moving train loads are transmitted directly to the girder, so this bridge has weak characteristics on impact. Therefore, considerable accelerations can cause unsatisfactory dynamic behavior of the open deck steel bridge. Especially, Impact created at rail joints can increase the dynamic response of the bridge and this phenomenon would be injurious to passenger comfort. In the present study, dynamic behavior of the open deck steel bridge which has a rail joint is estimated through experimental studies and bridge-train interaction analysis considering surface irregularities by rail joints.
A railway open deck plate girder bridge without ballast should support relatively heavier vehicle loads compared with its self-weight. For such a reason, actual dynamic response of the bridge is considerably differing with normal prediction because additional masses added from vehicle to a bridge have an effect on the dynamic characteristics of the bridge. These differences affect to the estimation of a natural frequency change that adopted for one of the evaluation technique of strength decrease, and these make trouble to the analysis of a natural frequency from the field test data that measured at the bridge subjected to a running vehicle. In this study, classification of mass participation ratio for each component of open deck plate girder bridge without ballast and the comparison according to the change of vibration characteristics for the case of subjected to a running vehicle were accomplished.
It is increasing construction of long span railway bridge with concrete track system for speed up of railway and efficient maintenance of track. As the sleeper of the concrete track system layed on a bridge is fixed on deck of the bridge, the displacement of the sleeper and deck is same. Therefore, the spacing between two sleeper installed at the end of the adjacent deck near the expansion joint of bridge becomes vary according to the longitudinal expansion of a deck by temperature change. By the way, if the spacing of sleepers become increase excessively, it causes large bending stress of in a rail, and it can leads failure or reduction of fatigue life of the rail. And also the excessive displacement of the rail may induce decrease ride comfort. Therefore, in order to prevent such problems, the allowable maximum sleeper spacing at a bridge expansion joint was mutually determined. And, the determination procedure of the maximum bridge expansion length based on the allowable sleeper spacing was suggested.
Deformations of bridge deck ends on abutments or on transition between bridge decks can cause extreme deformations on track. Especially, since slab track is fixed onto the bridge deck slab on concrete slab track-installed bridges, deformations of bridge deck ends directly affect the track behavior, and thus these interactions can bring about the premature failure of rail fastenings or other deteriorations to lower the serviceability. In this study, a foreign standard to evaluate forces on track components caused by the track-bridge interactions and the serviceability of bridge deck ends is investigated, and for the real bridges, the serviceability of bridge deck ends according to several parameters of bridge and track is analyzed. It is found that arrangements and spring coefficients of bridge bearings, as well as distance between bridge bearing and last rail support, support spacings, rail support spring coefficient, are very important parameters.

Further more, the excessive displacement of the rail may induce decrease ride comfort as well as corrugation of rail surface. Therefore, it is required to determine the allowable maximum sleeper spacing to prevent such problems. For the purpose, investigation on the influence factor on sleeper spacing for straight track was carried out. Variation of bending moment in a rail, wheel force, and the ratio of primary and secondary deflection of the rail according to sleeper spacing was investigated, and, as a result, the maximum allowable sleeper spacing at the bridge expansion joint was suggested.
