Brake squeal noise has been a challenging problems for a long time. It is very annoying to passengers and residents near tracks. Two methods have been applied to reduce or eliminate brake squeal noise. One is to improve frictional materials; the other is to optimize the topology and structures of brake pads. In this study, we developed two kinds of brake pads; one is a pad whose frictional material is different from the KTX brake pad friction material; the other is a flexible pad that has the same frictional material as that of the KTX brake pad, but a different structure. Squeal noise and friction coefficients were measured and analyzed using a full-scale brake dynamometer. It was found that the dynamometer test can simulate the squeal noise of KTX trains at stations. The squeal frequency of the KTX at 4500Hz was exactly reproduced; this value of 4500Hz was one of the natural frequencies of the KTX brake disc. It was also found that the squeal noise depended on the caliper pressure, initial disc temperature and braking speed. The average friction coefficient was 0.35~0.45. The new pad lowered the squeal noise by 17.3~21.6dB(A).

Eco-friendly mountain railways operate on concrete rack tracks embedded on existing sharp curved and steep roads to preserve the environment in mountainous areas. Owing to the narrow roads, single lines are inevitable, and many branches are required. In branches, previous switchers and heating devices cannot be applied, because of the limited spacing for the rack and the slow removal of thick ice. To solve these problems, a switch and a heating device have been developed. The switcher changes the line by moving the block of concrete track with hydraulic actuators. The lack of discontinuity reduces the derailment risk and makes locking simple. The heating device uses high frequency induction coils to increase the efficiency and melt the thick ice rapidly. The prototype switcher and heating device were produced and operated to prove their performance. The heating device yielded a 10 times greater efficiency than the previous one. The switcher and heating device are the essential core technologies for the operation of mountain trams in winter and contribute to the spread of mountain railways to domestic or foreign resort areas by enhancing safety and efficiency. In addition, they can provide transportation rights to local residents in poor winter traffic, and bring about tourism and local economic growth.

In this study, to examine the causes of cracks in continuously reinforced concrete tracks (CRCTs) and the main factors affecting cracking, a field survey on the status of cracks and crack patterns in the Gyeong-bu high speed line was conducted, and the crack patterns of CRCT due to the temperature difference between the top of the slab (TCL) and the bottom of the subbase (HSB) and the drying shrinkage of concrete were predicted by a nonlinear finite element model considering the structure of CRCT. The results of the numerical analysis show that cracks will be developed at the interface between the sleeper and the TCL, and under the sleeper due to the temperature difference and concrete shrinkage. This corresponds well to the crack locations found in the field. Also, it is found that the most significant factors are the coefficient of thermal expansion with respect to the temperature difference, and the drying shrinkage strain with respect to shrinkage. According to the results, the reinforcement ratio should be carefully determined considering the structures of CRCT because the crack spacing is not always proportional to the reinforcement ratio due to the sleepers embedded in the TCL.
It is connected with various gauges existing in Euro-Asian continents. Such differences impedes the operation seriously as on the contact of railway tracks of different gauge the cargo must be either transshipped or the running assemblies of rail vehicles must be exchanged. Those operations are costly, time-consuming and require extended infrastructure together with very expensive storage and transshipment facilities at border-crossing point. Moreover, those operations extend transportation time considerably. Therefore, effectiveness of railway transportation systems significantly depends on track gauge change 1435/1520mm, which connects with complicated handling-shifting operations. The paper concerns assessment of effectiveness in strategical rail systems with gauge changing. The paper presents short description of transport system with gauge changing and initial assessment of shifting technologies. Method of system assessment comparison based on Life Cycle Cost model is described here as well.

Squeal noise is a harsh, high-pitched sound that occurs when railways are running at sharp curve tracks. The cause of squeal noise is known to be the transient lateral traction force between wheel and rail. Field measurements are too difficult to control the parameters. Thus, the scaled test rig should have been made in order to investigate the generating mechanism of squeal noise. The unique feature of our test rig, HSTR(Hongik Squeal Testing Rig), is that DOFs of its wheelset are as close to as those of the real railway. The attack angle and running speed of the rail roller are controlled in real time for simulating a transient characteristic of driving curve. The environment conditions, such as given axle load, running speed, and wheel's yaw angle have been identified for generating squeal noise and the squeal noise itself has been measured. The relation between wheel creepage and creep force in lateral direction and the criteria for squeal noise have been investigated, which results has been verified by finite element method.

In this study, field measurements were performed to analyze the effects of train types (AREX, AREX Express, KTX, KTX-Sancheon) and train speeds on the dynamic behavior of the direct fixation track structure on Yeongjong grand bridge by bridge type (truss bridge, suspension bridge). Based on field measurement results, the track impact factor and train running stability (coefficient of derailment, Rate of wheel load reduction, lateral displacement of rail head) are compared with domestic and foreign standards and regulations to influence the dynamic behavior of direct fixation track. As a result, the differences in the dynamic behavior of the direct fixation tracks by the type of bridges of Yeongjong bridge are not significant, but it was analyzed that these were more directly affected by the magnitude of the train load. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the reinforcement plan of the direct fixation track structure on Yeongjong grand bridge in consideration of the increase of the track impact factor and dynamic track force.
Transmitting correct train control information is important in a train control system which demands safety. The train control information includes the maximum speed of trains, position of preceding trains, incline of tracks and curve sections etc. A radio frequency-communication based train control system is influenced by the noise and interference because the train control information is transmitted by wireless between a on-board system and wayside system. The radio frequency-communication based train control system is a mobile communication system due to moving trains. The inter symbol interference(ISI) occurs by the multipath fading in the mobile ommunication system. As signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) is decreased by the ISI, the train control information is not received correctly. In case of tunnel section, numerous reflected waves exist. Therefore, the power density of receiver is decreased by difference among the received times, magnitudes, phases through the multipath. So, the train suddenly is stopped by the fail-safe operation in the train control system on account of decreasing the power density of receiver. In this paper, a line of sight model-(Additive White Gaussian noise(AWGN) channel), rayleigh and rician fading model are presented. Probability density functions which are related to the SNR are derived from the models. The fading phenomenon severely occurs as a result of analyzing the probability density functions. So, the space diversity method is used in order to reduce the fading effect and it is demonstrated by using Matlab program.

For many decades, the railway was constructed using tracks with jointed rails of relatively short lengths in accordance with rolling and handling technology. The joints cause many drawbacks in the track and lead to significant maintenance cost. So, railroad engineers became interested in eliminating joints to increase service loads ana speeds by improving rolling, welding, and fastening technology. Continuous welded rail(CWR) track has many advantages over the conventional jointed-rail track. But, in the case of the elimination of rail joints, it may cause the track to be suddenly buckled laterally by thermal loads. In this paper, CWR track model and CWRB program are developed for linear buckling analysis using finite element method. Rail element with a total of 14 degrees of freedom is used. The stiffness of the fastener, tie, and ballast bed are included by a set of spring elements. The investigation on the buckling modes and temperature of CWR track is presented.

In this study, the relationship between the track support stiffness and the track impact factor for a sleeper floating track and a turnout system with wood ties currently employed in Korean urban transit was assessed by performing field tests using actual vehicles running along the service lines. Field tests were performed on four track systems (i.e., sleeper floating track, and point, lead and crossing sections of turnout system). The theoretically designed track impact factor and track support stiffness were compared with the corresponding track impact factor and track support stiffness measured through field tests for the target tracks on the service line. The track impact factor for the service line appeared to increase with the deviation of track support stiffness according to vehicle driving direction; therefore, it was inferred that the deviation of track support stiffness between each track section directly affected the track impact factor.
For many decades, the railway was constructed using tracks with jointed rails of relatively short lengths. The joints cause many drawbacks in the track and lead to signeficant maintenance cost. so, railroad engineers became interested in eliminating joints. Continuous welded rail(CWR) track has many advantages over the conventional jointed-rail track. but, in the case of the elimination of rail joints, it may cause the track to be suddenly buckled laterally by thermal loads. In this paper, firstly, 3-D CWR track model and CWRB program exactly considering the influence of tie are developed far linear static and buckling analysis using finite element method. Characteristics of CWR track model are using 7-dofs beam element as rail, Offset technic exactly considering centroid axies difference of track components(rail, rail-pad-fastener, tie), and Thermal gradient considering thermal difference of top flange and bottom flange in rail section.. second,, Through the static and linear buckling analysis by CWRB, Influences of various track components (rail, ballast, fastener, tie and so on..) on CWR track behavior and stability was characterized.
