The problem of determination of axial force in continuous welded rail(CWR) has attracted a number of railroad engineers due to its practical importance in prevention of accidents related to buckling and pull apart. In this paper, we investigated the application of the beam-column theory to presume the axial force in CWR and proposed the development process of the prediction equation and model to presume the axial force in CWR.
According to introduce KTX in Korea, rail-road bridge section of KTX was increased approximately 50% of the total length. Bridge is required periodic inspection and check to prevent accident and hazard because various damage which have effects on traffic and replacement of damaged parts is difficult. Specifically, the train as large-scale transportation because accidents led to great damage, preventing these accidents are critical. Well-organized management and maintenance systems are required to prevent the accidents. In the case of roadway bridge, bridge inspection vehicle is used to deploy inspectors in roadway bridge. However, this method requires a lot of time and efforts, and inspectors are exposed to potential hazard. Also, surrounding environment like poor lighting system or electric wire could harm the inspector while repairing. Due to this reason, automatic repairing and inspecting system have been introduced to replace the old methods. Management system of the railroad bridge track for trains uses various advanced equipments, but whereas roadway bridge management system is lacking these efforts. As a result of that, this study looks over the existing management method. and review the method to apply the Bridge Inspection Robot in railroad bridge. Moreover, this study suggests future management technology using inspection robot.
This paper presented a literature review and investigation analysis results of total 19 present guide book and provisions of maintenance and management system in existing railway bridges to development of urban maglev track structures inspection manual. This research carried out a cooperated research subject 3-1, development a design code and maintenance and management inspection manual for urban maglev track structures, of the Center for Urban Maglev Program. Three types of track structures were includes as a major analytical parameter together with railroad, high speed railroad, subway and light rail transit. Bridges were analyzed a general rules, investigation, evaluation, repair and strengthen method as a key aspect. And rail were analyzed examination and maintenance also. This analysis results show that the track structures evaluation are based on the test and examination results, and repaired or strengthened consideration of deterioration, track irregularity and materials according to provision requirements.

In this study, rail surface defects are increasing due to the aging of urban railway rails, but in the detailed guidelines for track performance evaluation established by the country, rail surface damage is inspected with the naked eye of engineers and simple measuring tools. With the recent enactment of the Track Diagnosis Act, a large budget has been invested and the volume of rail diagnosis is rapidly increasing, but it is difficult to secure the reliability of diagnosis results using labor-intensive visual inspection techniques. It is very important to discover defects in the rail surface through periodic track tours and visual inspection. However, evaluating the severity of defects on the rail surface based on the subjective judgment of the inspector has significant limitations in predicting damage inside the rail. In this study, the rail internal crack characteristics due to rail surface damage were studied. In field measurements, rail surface damage locations were selected, samples of various damage types were collected, and the rail surface damage status was evaluated. In indoor testing, we intend to analyze the correlation between rail surface defects and internal defects using a electron scanning microscope (SEM). To determine the crack growth rate of urban railway rails currently in use, the Gaussian probability density function was applied and analyzed.

In this paper, we describe a method for precisely measuring the abrasion of the railway using an image processing technique. To calculate the wear of the rails, we provided a method for accurately matching the standard rail profile data and the profile data acquired by the rail inspection vehicle. After the lens distortion correction and the perspective transformation of the measured profile data, we used ICP Algorithm for accurate profile data matching with the reference profile extracted from the standard rail drawing. We constructed the prototype of the Rail Profile Measurement System for High-speed Railway and the experimental result on the three type of the standard rail used in Korea showed the excellent profile matching accuracy within 0.1mm.

Guided ultrasonic waves propagating over long distances within a short period provide a fast long-range inspection method. However, structures with arbitrary cross-sections, such as rails, have complicated dispersion characteristics that make analysis of the ultrasonic signal difficult. Therefore, an understanding of the characteristics of the propagating waves in rails is important for the creation of a reliable and practical inspection system using guided waves. In particular, it is necessary to investigate the dispersion characteristics of the guided waves. This paper introduces a method for the calculation of the dispersion curves of KS60 rails by adopting a SAFE method, and discusses the possibility of using guided waves as a technique for rail inspection.
Korean Train Express (KTX) has opened to commercial traffic since 2004 at maximum speed 300km/h. As the speed of the train becomes higher, the conditions of the rail affect the behavior of the running train. To secure the safety and reliability of high speed railway, it is necessary to inspect rail irregularities and to maintain the rail regularly. The authors designed the high speed rain measurement system over 300km/h. And we installed the system to Korea High-speed Railway (HSR 350x). In this paper, we introduce the high speed rail measurement system for HSR 350x and show verification of the performance of the system through test runs.

Railway tracks are repeatedly overstressed and damaged owing to increase in passing tonnage and numerous contact cycles between wheels of train and rails. In order to ensure safe train operation, heat-treated rails are used in addition to regular inspection and maintenance of these rails. Normal rails were treated using ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) to strengthen the surface of rails. A few changes in surface properties were detected with respect to hardness and compressive residual stress after UNSM treatment. Wear and rolling contact fatigue tests were performed using rails whose surfaces were hardened by UNSM and heat-treated rails. The amount of wear and fatigue life cycles were measured to estimate the effect of UNSM on the rail material. The material of the surfacehardened rail showed improved wear and rolling contact fatigue properties.

The track circuit carries out a train detection using a electrical closed loop, and incidentally it detects the rail rupture using the track circuit current flowing rail. However, in the case of the axle counter or the Radio based train control system, it requires a new way for detecting the rail rupture because of not using the track circuit. To solve this problem, it periodically checks non-steady state of rail by the track inspection car. but real-time detection of the rail rupture is impossible. Therefore, this paper analyzed feasibility to realize a real-time detection of rail rupture by using the return current.

As a result of the analysis, the crack mechanism caused by the running train and the crack characteristics of the acceleration section where cracks occur at an angle rising toward the rail surface were experimentally proven.
