Heat analysis of the plate type and wave type heat sink were carried out by using computational simulation. The heat resistance and air flow of two heat sink models were analysed according to natural and forced convection condition and positions of fan. When a fan was at the position of z-axis and y-axis in forced convection, the heat resistances of plate type heat sink were $0.17^{\circ}C/W$, and $0.28^{\circ}C/W$ respectively. In the case of wave type heat sink, they were $0.18^{\circ}C/W$ and $0.53^{\circ}C/W$. As the air flow velocities were averagely $0.386\;m/s\~3.269\;m/s$, air flow velocity of plate type heat sink was faster than that of wave type. In this experiment, it was observed that the plate type heat sink showed a good ability of heat radiation comparing with wave type one.
A numerical study was conducted on a simplified model of a high-temperature solar receiver which incorporates liquid-metal heat pipe. The objective of this paper is to compare the isothermal characteristics of the heat pipe receiver with the conventional receiver utilizing convection of molten salt as heat carrier. The solar receiver was assumed to be subject to a concentration ratio between 50 and 1,000 to supply high-temperature heat to a stirling engine for electric power generation. For simplicity of the analysis, a cylindrical geometry was assumed and typical dimensions were used based on available literature. The heat pipe had a shape of double-walled cavity and the working fluid was a sodium. The analysis was performed assuming that the radiation heat flux on the inner walls of the receiver was uniform, since the focus of this study was laid on the comparison of the conventional type and heat pipe type receiver. The results showed that the heat pipe type exhibited superior performance when the operating temperature becomes higher. In addition, to explore the advantage of the heat pipe receiver, the channel shape and dimensions should be adjusted to increase the heat transfer area between the wall and the heat trnasfer medium.

A computer simulation was conducted for heat and momentum transfer in a roller kiln. Time-averaged Navier-Stokes equation conjugated with energy balance equation was numerically solved to predict the temperature distribution and fluid flow field in the roller kiln. A computer simulation was performed for a roller kiln for three cases. Firstly, when there are no ceramic materials in the roller kiln, the effect of natural convection was studied on the temperature distribution and fluid flow field. From the result, it was observed that air takes the heat of wall away from the roller kiln by natural convection and the heat was not transferred effectively. Secondly, with ceramic materials temperature difference of ceramic material from the borrom to the top of a ceramic material was about 255K in 5th zone and this is because the heat is transferred from the surface of a ceramic material to flowing air with relatively low temperature. Finally, we considered effect of radiation heat transfer. Temperature difference of ceramic material in 5th zone was about 300 K, due to radiation heat transfer on the ceramic material surfaces.
A solar thermal simulator is suitable for indoor experiments of solar receivers and reactors when solar insolation and weather conditions are not favorable. Moreover, due to the easy control of electric power input, the solar thermal simulator allows the adjustment of power input incident on solar receivers and reactors and thus the implementation of accurate experiments. We manufactured a solar simulator, which is comprised of three sets of a xenon lamp and an elliptical reflector. In order to serve as a test facility, optical characterization of the solar simulator via radiation heat flux measurement is a critical prerequisite. We applied the flux mapping method to measuring the heat flux distribution of the three lamps. We presented the measurement results in terms of the heat flux distribution, the peak heat flux, the power distribution, the maximum power, and the efficiency for electric power conversion into radiation power. Characterization results show that our solar simulator provides the peak heat flux of $3,019kW/m^2$, the maximum power of 16.9 kW, and the conversion efficiency of 45%, additionally with a 10% operation margin for output increase.
Accurate understanding of land surface is essential to analyze energy exchanges between earth surface and atmosphere. For the quantization of energy fluxes, the various researches about Land Surface Model(LSM) have been progressed. Among the various LSMs, the researches using Common Land Model(CLM) and Variable Infiltration Capacity(VIC) model are performed briskly. The CLM which is advanced LSM can calculate realistic results with few user defined parameters. The VIC model which is also typical LSM is widely used for estimation of energy fluxes and runoff in various fields. In this study, the energy fluxes which are net radiation, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux were estimated using CLM and VIC model at Southern Sierra-Critical Zone Observatory(SS-CZO) site in California, United States. In case of net radiation and sensible heat flux, both models showed good agreement with observations, however, the CLM showed underestimated patterns of net radiation and sensible heat flux during precipitation period. In case of latent heat flux, the CLM represented better estimation of latent heat flux than VIC model which underestimated the latent heat flux. Through the estimation of energy fluxes and analysis of models' pros and cons, the applicability of CLM and VIC models and need of multi-model application were identified.

Characteristics of premixed flames in counter-flow system are numerically studied using a detailed chemical reaction mechanism including gas phase radiation. Without radiation effect accounted, low CO and high NO$_{x}$ emission indices are observed, when strain rate decreases, due to increased residence time and higher flame temperature. Higher NO$_{2}$ production has been also observed when two premixed flames are interacting or cold air stream is mixed with burned gas. The rate of NO$_{x}$ production and destruction is dependent upon the diffusional strength of H and OH radicals, the existence of NO and the concentration of HO$_{2}$. For radiating flames, the peak temperature and NO$_{x}$ production rate decreases as the strain rate decreases. At high strain rate, it is found that the effect of radiation on flame is little due to its negligible radiating volume. It is also found that NO$_{x}$ production from the interacting premixed flame is reduced due to reduced temperature resulting from radiation heat loss. It is concluded that the radiation from gas has significant effect of flame structure and on emission characteristics.ristics.

This investigation is carried out numerically for the two dimensional natural convection and surface radiation heat transfer in a square enclosure. The bottom and top walls are isothermal at hot and cold temperatures respectively whereas the left and right side walls are adiabatic except a transparent window on the right side partially. The exchange of radiant energy is obtained by the net radiation method and the shape factor by the crossed string method. The changes in temperature and Nusselt number distributions of the walls due to the surface radiation and insolation are also investigated.
The thermal environment in a small city rapidly deteriorates due to the urbanization and overpopulation. It is important to understand and predict the thermal environment in a city area. The thermal environment is highly affected by the solar radiation and temperature distributions changing over time periodically. To predict the thermal environment precisely, the solar radiation calculation including radiation strength, incidence angle, and thermal radiation between building surface and ground should be considered. In this study, the computational domain includes various artificial structures such as building, ground, asphalt, brick and grass. To consider the solar radiation, the unsteady state numerical calculation is performed from sun rise to mid-day (2:00pm). The numerical methods consist of solar load and one dimensional heat conduction through the boundaries to reduce the computational load and improve the flexibility of the calculation.
The design of thermal radiation shield cooled by a cryocooler is presented. This study is motivated mainly by our recent development of prototype superconducting magnet system for the Cyclotron K120. The superconducting magnet system is composed of the magnet cryostat, transfer line and supply cryostat. In order to minimize thermal radiation load, the superconducting coil form in the magnet cryostat is enclosed by the thermal radiation shield which is thermally connected to the first-stage cold head of a two-stage cryocooler in the supply cryostat. Since the supply cryostat is located far from the magnet cryostat large temperature gradient along the thermal shield is unavoidable. In this paper, the thermal radiation shield is optimized to minimize temperature gradient with taking into account the cryogenic load, system structure and electrical load. The effect of heat source from thermal conduction through mechanical supports on the temperature distribution of thermal radiation shield is also discussed.

Aiming at one of decisive alternatives for long term aspect of nuclear power concerns, an integral and closed nuclear system, AMBIDEXTER (Advanced Molten-salt Break-even Inherently-safe Dual-mission Experimental and TEst Reactor) concept is under development. The AMBIDEXTER complex essentially comprises two mutually independent loops of the radiation/material transport and the heat/energy conversion, centered at the integrated reactor assembly, which enables one to utilize maximum benefits of nuclear energy under minimum risks of nuclear radiation. And it provides precious radioisotopes and radiation sources from its waste stream. Also the reactor operates at very low level of fission products inventory throughout its lifetime. The nuclear and thermalhydraulic characteristics of the molten TH/$^{233}$ U fuel salt extend the capability of the self-sustaining AMBIDEXTER fuel cycle to enhance resource security and safeguard transparency. The reactor system is consisted of a single component module of the core, heat exchangers and recirculation pumps with neither pipe connections nor active valves in between, which will significantly improve inherent features of nuclear safety. States of the core technologies associated with designing and developing the AMBIDEXTER concept are mostly available in commercialized form and thus demonstration of integral aspects of the concept should be the prime area in future R&D programs.
