  • Leishmaniasis is one of the important tropical diseases in the world. Although it is not prevalent In Korea, imported cases have been recorded. The karyotype of Leishmcnic sp. has been observed to be variable by localities or by strains, but the karyotype of a strain is known to be stable. This study was performed to observe if the karyotype of a Leishmonio sp. would be changed under some stressful conditions. The karyotype, analyzed by pulsed Held gradient gel electrophoresis, was not grossly changed by heat shock, chemotherapeutics, UV illumination, and gamma irradiation. Radiation destroyed the chromosomes mechanically but subcultured organisms after irradiation showed unaffected karyotype. The present findings suggest that the karyotype of a Leishmnnia strain is so stable that it is not altered by temporary stimulation with heat, drugs, and radiation.

  • The objective of this work is to analyze the variation in energy performance for each flat plate collector connected in series. In this study, it was assumed that solar water heating system with annual solar fraction of 60% was installed in an office building in Seoul, South Korea. The transient energy performance corresponding to four cases, which are selected using different solar radiation and outdoor air temperature, is studied by analyzing the variation in outlet temperature, solar useful heat gain, and thermal efficiency of each collector. It is observed that the useful heat gain and the collector efficiency decrease continuously, and outlet temperature increases when increasing the number of collector connected in series. The long-term performance is assessed by evaluating the thermal efficiency of each collector for two solar radiation conditions ranging from 780 to $820W/m^2$ and from 380 to $420W/m^2$. It is found that the differences between the intercept and slope of the efficiency curves for first and eighth collectors are 3.68% and 6.74% for solar radiation of $800{\pm}20W/m^2$ and 8.57% and 12.90% for solar radiation of $400{\pm}20W/m^2$, respectively. In addition, it is interesting to note that annual useful heat gain and collector efficiency are reduced with similar rate of about 6.13% when increasing the collector area by connecting the collectors in series.

  • This article describes an investigation of basic combustion characteristics of radiant burner with various firing rate and equivalence ratios in porous metal. As a main experimental condition, firing rates and equivalence ratios each were adjusted from 204 to $408kW/m^2$ and 0.6 to 1.3. The purpose of this study is to investigate radiation efficiency using two experiment methods. The first way is to calculate the radiation efficiency by measuring the temperature of the burner surface, and the second is to compute the radiation efficiency by measuring the radiation intensity of the burner surface with a radio meter. The value of the radiation efficiency did not exactly match in the two cases. But we figured out that in accordance with increasing heat power, radiation efficiency was decreased. And additional complementary experiment on the relationship between these values is needed.

  • A method was developed for analyzing the radiation heat transfer from the duct burner flame to the heat exchanger in a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) in order to supplement the existing thermal design process. The burner flame and the heat exchanger were considered to be imaginary planes, and the flame temperature, surface, and emissivity were simplified using an engineering approach. Three analysis cases in which the duct burner position and fuel were changed were considered. The calculated flame radiative heat transfer and local flux on the heating surface were compared with those of 3-atomic gas radiation and convection. In all analysis cases, heat transfer by 3-atomic gas radiation was very small. The ratio of the flame radiative heat transfer to the convection heat transfer on the heating surface was estimated to be as high as 8-41%. Moreover, the local heat flux on the heating surface centerline was dominated by flame radiative heat flux.

  • The temperature change in the biologically activated sludge wastewater treatment process was predicted using the heat transfer model. All incoming and outgoing heats in wastewater treatment processes were considered. Incoming heats included the solar radiation heat, the heat from impeller mechanical energy, and the biochemical heat in the aeration process. Outgoing heats comprised the radiation heat from the waste itself, the heat of vaporization and surface aeration, the wind convection heat and the conduction heat between the surface and aerator. All heats were used as an input to the existing empirical heat transfer model. The heat transfer model of wastewater treatment processes is presented also. To test the validity of the heat transfer model, the operating conditions of the actual wastewater treatment plant were used. The temperatures were compared with the model temperatures. Model predictions were consistent within the $1.0^{\circ}C$.

  • Based on the monthly weather report of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and daily sea surface temperature (SST) data from National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDl) (1991-2001), mean heat fluxes were estimated at the Gunsan harbor Net heat flux was transported from the air to the sea surface during March to early September, and it amounts to $125\;Wm^{-2}$ in average daily during May to June. During the middle of September to February, the transfer of net heat flux was conversed from the sea surface to the air with $-125\;Wm^{-2}$ in mininum value in October. Short wave radiation was ranged from 50 to $248\;Wm^{-2}$ showing maxima in April to June. Long wave radiation was ranged from 25 to $92\;Wm^{-2}$ with mininum value in June to July. Sensible heat flux denoting negative values in April to August was ranged from -30 to $72\;Wm^{-2}.$ Latent heat flux was ranged from 15 to $82\;Wm^{-2}$ with maxima in August to September. The phase of heat exchange was changed from cooling to heating in the end of February, and from heating to cooling In the beginning of September. The advective term of heat flux showed minima in April to June and maxima in November. The ratio of temperature variations was 1.37 in the sea surface process and the horizontal process by advection. This indicates that the main factor in variation of temperature at Gunsan harbor is the heat exchange process through the sea surface from the air.

  • The rotary kiln is one of the most widely used industrial reactors for contacting gases and solids. Kilns are mainly used for drying, calcining and reducing solid materials. In an indirected fired rotary kiln, heat is supplied to the outside of the kiln wall. Heat transfer in indirected fired rotary kilns encompasses all the modes of transport mechanisms, that is, conduction, convection and radiation. This paper deal with the heat transfer characteristics of indirect fired rotary kiln for scale up.

  • Radiation-induced oscillatory instability in CH$_4$/Air diffusion flames is numerically investigated by adopting detailed chemistry. Counterflow diffusion flame is employed as a model flamelet and optically thin gas-phase radiation is assumed. Attention is focused on the extinction regime induced by radiative heat loss, which occurs at low strain rate. Once a steady flame structure is obtained for a prescribed value of initial strain rate, transient solution of the flame is calculated after a finite amount of strain-rate perturbation is imposed on the steady flame. Depending on the initial strain rate and the amount of perturbed strain rate, transient evolution of the flame exhibits various types of flame-evolution behaviors. Basically, the dynamic behaviors can be classified into two types, namely oscillatory decaying solution and diverging solution leading to extinction.

  • Cooling load from the top plate to L$N_2$ surface, including wall conduction, gas conduction, radiation, and current leads, is investigated in a closed cooling system for HTS transformer. In general methods of load calculation, individual load is estimated separately, but they are actually coupled each other because of natural convection of nitrogen vapor. Using heat transfer analysis, we calculate cooling load with taking into account the effect of natural convection. Cooling load is under- estimated approximately 2 % when the natural convection is ignored. If the operating current is high, there will be a wide difference between actual cooling load and cooling load by individual calculation. Cooling load decreases with increasing number of radiation shield. With production, construction, and cooling load, three radiation shields are proper to 1 MVA HTS transformer.
