  • Reactor cavity cooling systems (RCCSs) comprising passive safety features use the atmosphere as a coolant, which cannot be lost. However, their drawback is that they are easily affected by atmospheric disturbances. To realize the commercial application of the two types of passive RCCSs, namely RCCSs based on atmospheric radiation and atmospheric natural circulation, their safety must be evaluated, that is, they must be able to remove heat from the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) surface at all times and under any condition other than under normal operating conditions. These include both expected and unexpected natural phenomena and accidents. Moreover, they must be able to eliminate the heat leakage emitted from the RPV surface during normal operation. However, utilizing all of the heat emitted from the RPV surface increases the degree of waste heat utilization. This study aims to understand the characteristics and degree of passive safety features for heat removal by comparing RCCSs based on atmospheric radiation and atmospheric natural circulation under the same conditions. It was concluded that the proposed RCCS based on atmospheric radiation has an advantage in that the temperature of the RPV could be stably maintained against disturbances in the ambient air.

  • Analysis method for the radiation heat transfer from the duct burner flame to the heat exchanger in a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) was presented to supplement the existing thermal design process. Flame on a burner and a heat exchanger were postulated as imaginary planes and flame temperature, surface and emissivity was simplified in a aspect of engineering approach. The calculated local flame radiative heat flux on the heating surface was compared with the heat flux of 3-atomic gas radiation and convection.

  • The renewed interest in the use of hyperthermia in cancer therapy is based on radiobiological and clinical evidence indicating that there may be significant thereapeutic advantages with the use of hyperthermia alone or combined with irradiation plus heat. Authors performed the experiment using the chemically induced mammary carcinoma of rats to observe the difference in temperature changes between tumor and normal tissue during heat, and to compare the response of the tumors to radiation alone and to radiation plus hyperthermia. The results were as follows 1. Temperature of tumors was significantly higher than in the normal tissue during heating and the difference was about $1.5^{\circ}C$. 2. $TCD_{50}$ in radiation alone and hyperthermia immediately following radiation was 1,282 rad and 795 rad, respectively and TER value was 1.81.

  • In the present research, NASA LRB plume radiation models are reconstructed with Thermal Desktop software, where the radiation to vehicle base environment can be calculated. The calculation shows the similar radiation heat compared to NASA prediction. Based on LRB plume radiation model, a KSLV-II thermal radiation model is proposed.

  • This research investigated the effect of solar radiation on the temperature distribution in concrete mat foundation. Zhang and Huang Model was utilized to estimate solar radiation heat at a given date and time. A one-dimensional finite element formula was derived with the fundamental laws of heat transfer and Galerkin method. Based on the formula, a one dimensional finite element analysis code was developed using MATLAB. Hydration heat analysis of mat foundation were conducted using the developed code. It was found that the solar radiation reduced the maximum temperature difference in mat foundation, and this temperature difference reduction was more prominent in case of summer season cast, a higher initial concrete temperature, and a thicker mat foundation depth. The research recommended that the solar radiation should be considered in hydration heat analysis of concrete mat foundation so as not to overestimate the maximum temperature difference in mat foundation.

  • Radiant burners are applicable to drying, preheating and curing in materials manufacturing processes. High radiation efficiency is one of the most important performance criteria for these burners. The wide variation in reported radiation efficiencies are partly due to the differences in the measurement techniques. In the present work, water cooled radiant heat flux meter was used to measure radiant heat flux from a metal fiber mat burner. Non-contact type thermometer was also utilized to measure the surface temperature of the burner. Combustion gas was measured by gas analyzers. According to the thermal loads and stoichiometric ratios, radiant heat transfer ratio and combustion performance were discussed here in.

  • In this study, a rational procedures for estimation of insulation thickness of a vertical wall for condensation control or personnel protection has been investigated. Design parameters are height of the wall, thermal conductivity, emissivity, and operating temperatures. The results indicated that the surface emissivity plays a very important role in the design of insulation for the purpose of surface temperature control, especially in natural convection situation. radiation heat transfer coefficients for some new insulation material surface, such as elastomers, estimated to be more than 90% of the total surface heat transfer coefficient.

  • The cooling problem of the hot internal pipe flow has been investigated. Simultaneous conduction, convection, and radiation were considered with azimuthally varying convective heat loss at the pipe wall. A complex, nonlinear integro-differential radiative transfer equation was solved by the discrete ordinates method (or called S$_{N}$ method). The energy equation was solved by control volume based finite difference technique. A parametric study was performed by varying the conduction-to-radiation parameter, optical thickness, and scattering albedo. The results have shown that initially the radiatively active medium could be more efficiently cooled down compared with the cases otherwise. But even for the case with dominant radiation, as the medium temperature was lowered, the contribution of conduction became to exceed that of radiation.n.
