  • The radiation characteristics of a phased array antenna consisted of rectangular waveguides with a slant grid are investigated here. In particular, the effects of the slant angle on the radiation patterns are calculated by solving numerically the integral equation to the electric field over the waveguide aperture in view of the modal analysis. And it is found that the blindness on the radiation pattern can be moved by inserting a dielectric plug or sheath properly.

  • Analysis of the electromagnetic environment on topside of a ship is needed for optimal arrangement of all kinds of antennas to be installed on the shipboard in order to minimize the probability of EMI of equipment and subsystems in real ship after construction phase. In this paper we analyze the characteristics of electric-fields such as radiation patterns and near E-fields of V/UHF antennas installed on a shipboard. We compare simulated results with measurements on the real ship for near E-fields to verify the reliability of the computed electromagnetic environment. Although there are various factors causing errors such as cable loss and impedance mismatching etc. when measuring near E-field, both data show similar trends in the range of the acceptable tolerance.

  • This paper presents the analysis of the dielectric characteristics of a hot $SF_6$ gas in a gas circuit breaker. Hot gas flow is analyzed using the FVFLIC method considering the moving boundary, material properties of real $SF_6$ gas, and arc plasma. In the arc model, the re-absorption of the emitted radiation is approximated with the boundary source layer where the re-absorbed radiation energy is input as an energy source term in the energy conservation equation. The breakdown criterion of a hot gas is predicted using the critical electric field as a function of temperature and pressure. To validate the simulation method, breakdown voltage for a 145kV 40kA circuit breaker was measured for various conditions. Consistent results between the simulation and experiment were confirmed.

  • We present a new model for the generation of magnetic fields on large scales occurring at the end of cosmological reionisation. The inhomogeneous radiation provided by luminous sources and the fluctuations in the matter density field are the major ingredients of the model. More specifically, differential radiation pressure acting on ions and electrons gives rise to electric currents which induce magnetic fields on large scales. We show that on protogalactic scales, this process is highly efficient, leading to magnetic field amplitudes of the order of $10^{-1l}$ Gauss. While remaining of negligible dynamical impact, those amplitudes are million times higher than those obtained in usual astrophysical magnetogenesis models. Finally, we derive the relation between the power spectrum of the generated field and the one of the matter density fluctuations. We show in particular that magnetic fields are preferably created on large (galactic or cluster) scales. Small scale magnetic fields are strongly disfavoured, which further makes the process we propose an ideal candidate to explain the origin of magnetic fields in large scale structures.

  • In Korean nuclear power plants (NPPs), two thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) were provided to workers who work in an inhomogeneous radiation field; one on the chest and the other on the head. In this way, the effective dose for radiation workers at NPPs was determined by the high deep dose between two radiation dose from these TLDs. This represented a conservative method of evaluating the degree of exposure to radiation. In this study, to prevent the overestimation of the effective dose, field application experiments were implemented using two-dosimeter algorithms developed by several international institutes for the selection of an optimal algorithm. The algorithms used by the Canadian Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and American ANSI HPS N13.41, NCRP (55/50), NCRP (70/30), EPRI (NRC), Lakslumanan, and Kim (Texas A&M University) were extensively analyzed as two-dosimeter algorithms. In particular, three additional TLDs were provided to radiation workers who wore them on the head, chest, and back during maintenance periods, and the measured value were analyzed. The results found no significant differences among the calculated effective doses, apart from Lakshmanan's algorithm. Thus, this paper recommends the NCRP(55/50) algorithm as an optimal two-dosimeter algorithm in consideration of the solid technical background of NCRP and the convenience of radiation works. In addition, it was determined that a two-dosimeter is provided to a single task which is expected to produce a dose rate of more than 1 mSv/hr, a difference of dose rates depending on specific parts of the body of more than 30%, and an exposure dose of more than 2 mSv.

  • This parer presents the analysis of hot gas flow in puffer-type circuit breakers using FVFLIC method. For the analysis of arc-flow interaction, the flow field is analyzed from the equations of conservation for mass, momentum and energy with the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium state. The arc is represented as the energy source term composed of ohmic heating and radiation term in the energy conservation equation. Ohmic heating is computed by the electric field analysis only within the conducting plasma region. An approximate radiation transport model is employed for the evaluation of emission and absorption of the radiation. The analysis method was applied to the real circuit breaker model and simulation results such as pressure rise and arc voltage were compared with the experimental ones.

  • In this study, the influence of the near field, far field and radiation directivity of microstrip patch antenna when is used mushroom EBG(Electromagnetic Band Gap) as ground is investigated. Using characteristic of dispersion diagram of mushroom EBG, we calculated forbidden band(2.36GHz-2.85GHz) given mushroom type EBG microstrip antenna(2.45GHz) having 2-layer EBG that is operating within forbidden band. In oder to conform performance enhancemen of antenna using EBG ground, we have compared with the antenna using PEC(Perfect Electric Conductor) ground. We could know about 2.74dB increment of the radiation directivity, because EBG can suppress surface wave that is generated at interfaces of the dielectrics-conductor.

  • In this paper, radiation pattern of rectangular microstrip patch antenna with anisotropy substrates and superstrate is studied by using a rigorous full-wave approach and a moment method calculation. Dyadic Green's function is derived for selected anisotropy material by constitutive relation. From these results, integral equations of electric fields are formulated. The electric field integral equations are discretized into the matrix form by applying Galerkin's moment method and then the current coefficients are obtained.. After solving the current coefficients, the far-zone electric field in spherical coordinates can be obtained by using the stationary phase method. To verify the validity of numerical result, we compare our result with existing one and get a good agreement between them. From the numerical results, the radiation patterns for variation of uniaxial superstrate thickness, anisotropy ratio of substrate and superstrate layer are presented and analyzed.

  • This paper proposes a radiation model, which considers radiation transport as an important component in hot gas analysis. This radiation model is derived from combining the method of partial characteristics (MPC) with net emission coefficient (NEC), and it covers the drawbacks of existing models. Subsequently, using this proposed model, the arc-flow interaction in an arcing chamber can be efficiently computed. The arc is represented as an energy source term composed of ohmic heating and the radiation transport in the energy conservation equation. Ohmic heating term was computed by the electric field analysis within the conducting plasma region. Radiation transport was calculated by the proposed radiation model. Also, in this paper, radiation models were introduced and applied to the gas circuit breaker (GCB) model. Through simulation results, the efficiency of the proposed model was confirmed.
