  • Although seafood cooking drips were the byproducts from the fishery industry it was known that the cooking drips had many nutrients and could be used as functional materials. Previously, the physiological properties of cooking drips were shown to be increased by a gamma irradiation. But, there was no report on the safe for the genotoxicity on the irradiation. In this study, the genotoxicity of the cooking drips from Hizikia fusiformis, Enteroctopus dofleni and Thunnus thynnus was evaluated by the Ames test (Salmonella typhimurium reversion assay) and the SOS chromotest. The results from all samples were negative in the bacterial reversion assay with S. typhimurium TA98, TA100. No mutagenicity was detected in the assay, both with and without metabolic activation. The SOS chromotest also indicated that the gamma-irradiated seafood cooking drips did not show any mutagenicity. Therefore, this study indicated that gamma irradiation could be used for the hygiene, functional properties and processibility of seafood cooking drips.

  • The novelty in the present search, the Soda-Lime-Silica (SLS) glass waste to prepare free lead glass shielding was used in order to limit the accumulation of glass waste, which requires extensive time to decompose. This also saves on the consumption of pure SiO2, which is a finite resource. Furthermore, the combining of BaO with Bi2O3 into a glass network leads to increased optical properties and improved attenuation. The UV-Visible Spectrophotometer was used to investigate the optical properties and the radiation shielding properties were reported for current glass samples utilizing the PhysX/PDS online software. The optical property results indicate that when BaO content increases in glass structure, the Urbach energy ΔE, and refractive index n increases while the energy optical band gap Eopt decreases. The result of the metallisation criteria (M) revealed that the present glass samples are nonmetallic (insulators). Furthermore, the radiation shielding parameter findings suggest that when BaO was increased in the glass structure, the linear attenuation coefficient and effective atomic number (Zeff) rose. But the half-value layer HVL declined as the BaO concentration grew. According to the research, the glass samples are non-toxic, transparent to visible light, and efficient radiation shielding materials. The Ba5 sample is considered the best among all the samples due to its higher attenuation value and lower HVL and MFP values, which make it a suitable candidate as transparent glass shield shielding.

  • For the first time Aluminium-BariumeZinc oxide nanocomposite (ZABONC) was synthesized by solution combustion method where calcination was carried out at low temperatures (600℃) to study the electromagnetic (EM) (X/γ) radiation shielding properties. Further for characterization purpose standard techniques like PXRD, SEM, UV-VISIBLE, FTIR were used to find phase purity, functional groups, surface morphology, and to do structural analysis and energy band gap determination. The PXRD pattern shows (hkl) planes corresponding to spinel cubic phase of ZnAl2O4, cubic Ba(NO3)2, α and γ phase of Al2O3 which clearly confirms the formation of complex nano composite. From SEM histogram mean size of nano particles was calculated and is in the order of 17 nm. Wood and Tauc's relation direct energy band gap calculation gives energy gap of 2.9 eV. In addition, EM (X/γ) shielding properties were measured and compared with the theoretical ones using standard procedures (NaI (Tl) detector and multi channel analyzer MCA). For energy above 356 keV the measured shielding parameters agree well with the theory, while below this value slight deviation is observed, due to the influence of atomic/crystallite size of the ZABONC. Hence synthesized ZABONC can be used as a shielding material in EM (X/γ) radiation shielding.

  • This paper proposes a simplifying model for the calculation of the radiant flux and radiation energy in an RD (Radiation Dominated) arcplasma. Defects of the previous models are that the radiant flux and radition energy must be numerically solved by the three dimensional integration, and these calculations demand enormous computing time. Thses attribute to the global properties of radiation transfer. This paper suggests a simple calculation technique of radiation characteristics by considerig the relation between the plasma states and the radiation transfer process and by the systematic tabulation of the relation.

  • [6]-Gingerol, a major polyphenol of ginger (Zingiber officinale), exhibits a variety of biological properties including anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activity. However, the radioprotective effect of [6]-gingerol is still unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the radioprotective effect of [6]-gingerol against radiation-induced cell cytotoxicity and oxidative stress in HepG2 cells. [6]-Gingerol pretreatment attenuated radiation-induced cell cytotoxicity caused by 5Gy (half lethal dose, $LD_{50}$ of HepG2 cells). The measurements of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity were also performed. The results showed that [6]-gingerol pretreatment reduced increasing SOD and CAT activity after exposure of IR, indicating that [6]-gingerol protected oxidative stress by regulating cellular antioxidant enzyme (SOD and CAT) activity. These findings suggest that [6]-gingerol acts as a radioprotector by attenuating cell cytotoxicity and oxidative stress.

  • In this study, the microbial safety and mechanical properties of xeno-bone graft material irradiated were investigated during the storage. Xeno-bone graft of the deminerlized bone matrix in carboxy-methyl-cellulose was gamma-irradiated and was cultured in PCA and PDA agar to check microbial contamination. Total aerobic bacteria and fungi were not detected in the irradiated and non-irradiated sample stored in accelerator at $30^{\circ}C$ for 10 months. Viscosity of CMC treated gamma irradiation was also not changed by holding period.

  • The surface functionalization of a fluoropolymer by ion beam-induced graft polymerization was described in this research. The surface of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) films were irradiated by a 150 keV $H^+$ ions, and 4-vinyl pyridine (4VP) as a functional monomer was then thermally graft polymerized on the irradiated surface. The surface properties of poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP)-grafted PTFE films were investigated in terms of grafting degree, wettability, chemical structure, and morphology. The results revealed that the surface of PTFE films was successfully functionalized by ion beam-induced graft polymerization of 4VP.

  • This study was conducted to evaluated the sensory properties of Miyukgook, Korean seaweed soup, with gamma-irradiated Undaria pinnadifida for enhancing the storage of the harvested seaweed. The harvested seaweed was irradiated at the doses of 1, 3, 5, and 10 kGy. The Miyukgook was made by following the general recipe. The values of pH and acidity of the Miyukgook were not changed by the irradiation of harvested Undaria. The sensory evaluation result showed that the preference scores in all the sensory properties was a little decreased when it was irradiated, but sensory score of less than 5 kGy samples was similar in all terms. Therefore, it was considered that gamma irradiation with less than 5 kGy was effective for improvement of the storage stability of U. pinnatifida without the changes in the sensory of its major cooked food, Miyukgook.

  • For optimization of a low-noise track system, rail vibration and noise radiation needs to be investigated. The main influencing parameters for the noise radiation and the quantitative results of every track system can be obtained using a calculation model of generation and radiation of railway noise. This kind of model includes contact modeling and the calculation model of the dynamic properties of the wheel and the rail. This study used a nonlinear wheel/rail interaction model in the time domain to investigate the excitation of the rolling noise. Wheel/rail response is determined by time integrating Green's function of the rail together with force impulses from the wheel/rail contact. This model and the results of the study can be used for supporting calculation with the conventional model by an addition of the contributions due to nonlinearities to the roughness spectrum.
