Elastic-plastic stress analysis has been performed to evaluate the fatigue life of an autofrettaged pressure vessel containing cross-bores subjected to pulsating internal pressure of 200 MPa. Finite element analyses were used to calculate the residual and operating stress distributions of the pressure vessel due to the autofrettage process and pulsating internal pressure, respectively. Theoretical stress concentration factors of 3.06, 2.58, and 2.64 were obtained at the cross-bore of the pressure vessel due to internal pressure, 50%, and 100% autofrettage loadings, respectively. Local stresses and local strains determined from the elastic-plastic finite element analysis were employed to calculate the failure location and fatigue life of the pressure vessel with radial cross-bores, incorporating the low-cycle fatigue properties of the pressure vessel steel and fatigue damage parameters. Increase in the amount of overstrain by autofrettage process moved the crack initiation location from the inner radius toward a mid-wall, and extended the crack initiation life. Predicted fatigue life of the fully autofrettaged pressure vessel with cross-bores increased about 50%, compared to the unautofrettaged pressure vessel. At the autofrettage level higher than 50%, the failure location and fatigue life of the pressure vessel were not significantly influenced by the autofrettage level.
Analytical investigations were performed of a longitudinal crack representing a cylindrical surface in circular shafts loaded in torsion with taking into account the non-linear material behavior. Both functionally graded and multilayered shafts were analyzed. It was assumed that the material is functionally graded in radial direction. The mechanical behavior of shafts was modeled by using non-linear constitutive relations between the shear stresses and shear strains. The fracture was studied in terms of the strain energy release rate. Within the framework of small strain approach, the strain energy release rate was derived in a function of the torsion moments in the cross-sections ahead and behind the crack front. The analytical approach developed was applied to study the fracture in a clamped circular shaft. In order to verify the solution derived, the strain energy release rate was determined also by considering the shaft complimentary strain energy. The effects were evaluated of material properties, crack location and material non-linearity on the fracture behavior. The results obtained can be applied for optimization of the shafts structure with respect to the fracture performance. It was shown that the approach developed in the present paper is very useful for studying the longitudinal fracture in circular shafts in torsion with considering the material non-linearity.
This paper studies the energies and energy release rate (ERR) for the initially rotationally symmetric compressed (or stretched) in the inward (outward) radial direction of the PZT/Elastic/PZT sandwich circular plate with interface penny-shaped cracks. The investigations are made by utilizing the so-called three-dimensional linearized field equations and relations of electro-elasticity for piezoelectric materials. The quantities related to the initial stress state are determined within the scope of the classical linear theory of piezoelectricity. Mathematical formulation of the corresponding problem and determination of the quantities related to the stress-strain state which appear as a result of the action of the uniformly normal additional opening forces acting on the penny-shaped crack's edges are made within the scope of the aforementioned three-dimensional linearized field equations solution which is obtained with the use of the FEM modelling. Numerical results of the energies and ERR and the influence of the problem parameters on these quantities are presented and discussed for the PZT- 5H/Al/PZT-5H, PZT-4/Al/PZT-4, $BaTiO_3/Al/BaTiO_3$ and PZT-5H/StPZT-5H sandwich plates. In particular, it is established that the magnitude of the influence of the piezoelectricity and initial loading on the ERR increases with crack radius length.

Under repeated rolling, initial plastic deformation introduces residual stresses which render the steady cyclic state purely elastic. This is called the process of shakedown. Many studies have been done about the shakedown in semi-infinite half space using calculated Hertizian pressure. In this paper shakedown processes in a shaft are studied by finite element analyses of a two dimensional(plane strain) model with elastic-linear-kinematic-hardening-plastic material subjected to repeated, frictionless rolling contact. Symmetric and non-symmetric pressure distributions are obtained using a simplified model of the bearing-shaft assembly. The rolling contact is simulated by repeatedly translating both pressure distributions along the surface of the shaft. By the influence of the non-symmetric pressure, larger residual radial tensile stress is generated in the immediate subsurface layer, which may make a crack propagate and, the subsurface undergoes a zigzag plastic deformation during the shakedown process, which may lead to a crack initiation.

Damage behaviors induced in silicon carbide by an impact of particle having different material and size were investigated. Especially, the influence of the impact velocity of particle on the cone crack shape developed was mainly discussed. The damage induced by spherical impact was different depending on the material and size of particles. Ring cracks on the surface of specimen were multiplied by increasing the impact velocity of particle. The steel particle impact produced larger ring cracks than that of SiC particle. In the case of high velocity impact of SiC particle, radial cracks were produced due to the inelastic deformation at the impact site. In the case of the larger particle impact, the damage morphology developed was similar to the case of smaller particle one, but a percussion cone was farmed from the back surface of specimen when the impact velocity exceeded a critical value. The zenithal angle of cone cracks developed into SiC material decreased monotonically with increasing of the particle impact velocity. The size and material of particle influenced more or less on the extent of cone crack shape. An empirical equation, $\theta$= $\theta$$\sub$st/, v$\sub$p/(90-$\theta$$\sub$st/)/500 R$\^$0.3/($\rho$$_1$/$\rho$$_2$)$\^$$\frac{1}{2}$/, was obtained as a function of impact velocity of the particle, based on the quasi-static zenithal angle of cone crack. It is expected that the empirical equation will be helpful to the computational simulation of residual strength in ceramic components damaged by the particle impact.
To check technical improvement in the soundness and strength of 12% Cr steel rotor, a 25 tons of rotor with 65 tons of ingot was made in real size and was cut to pieces to take test samples, and the various mechanical tests such as impact, tensile, creep, and fatigue were carried out. The strengths are compared with those of 1% Cr-Mo-V rotor of same size. Microstructures of the samples are examined and reviewed. The results can be summarized as follows. 1) Fracture appearance transition temperatures are 80.deg. C at the center part and 60.deg. C near surface of 12% Cr rotor, and 8.deg. C near surface of 1% Cr-Mo-V rotor. 2) Comparative rapid softening occurs at higher temperatures above 600.deg. C for 12% Cr steel and 550.deg. C for 1% Cr-Mo-V steel in tension tests. 3) Fatigue crack propagation rate of 12% Cr steel is almost same as that of 1% Cr-Mo-V steel at the same corresponding surface part of the rotors. The crack growth rate of center part of 12% Cr rotor is faster than near surface part of the rotor, and the crack growth rate at the load condition of R=0.04 is slower than that of the load condition of R=0.5 for both 12% Cr steel and 1% Cr-Mo-V steel. 4) Crack growth rate of radial direction near surface of 12% Cr rotor is faster than that of transverse direction at the same part because of the difference in residual stresses. 5) Both creep and fatigue strengths of 12% Cr steel are superior to those of 1% Cr-Mo-V steel and the difference is thought the effect of climb and glide controlled creep by solid solution of alloying elements and dispersion of carbides.

KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) fabricated MOX (Mixed Oxide) fuel pellets as a cooperation project with PSI (Paul Scherrer Institut) for an irradiation test in the Halden reactor. The MOX pellets were fitted into fuel rods that included instrumentation for measurement in IFE (Institutt for Energiteknikk). The fuel rods were assembled into the test rig and irradiated in the Halden reactor up to 50 MWd/kgHM. The irradiated fuel rods were transported to the IFE, where ceramography was carried out. The fuel rods were cut transversely at the relatively higher burn-up locations and then the radial cross sections were observed. Micrographs were analyzed using an image analysis program and grain sizes along the radial direction were measured by the linear intercept method. Radial cracks in the irradiated MOX were observed that were generally circumferentially closed at the pellet periphery and open in the hot central region. A circumferential crack was formed along the boundary between the dark central and the outer regions. The inner surface of the cladding was covered with an oxide layer. Pu-rich spots were observed in the outer region of the fuel pellets. The spots were surrounded by many small pores and contained some big pores inside. Metallic fission product precipitates were observed mainly in the central region and in the inside of the Pu spots. The average areal fractions of the metallic precipitates at the radial cross section were 0.41% for rod 6 and 0.32% for rod 3. In the periphery, pore density smaller than 2 ${\mu}m$ was higher than that of the other regions. The grain growth occurred from 10 ${\mu}m$ to 12 ${\mu}m$ in the central region of rod 6 during irradiation.
Grout is generally operated with low viscous material similar to water, but grout for micro crack with high viscous materials and high injection pressure is gradually increased under the development of underground and subsea space. In order to estimate grouting injection performance considering crack width, viscosity of grouting materials, and injection pressure, there should be a reliable standard laboratory testing method. In this paper, theoretical injection mechanisms of grouting materials are presented as radial and linear flows, and laboratory testing apparatus are introduced to simulate each flow case. Radial flow is simulated by using acrylic disk plates which are able to spread grouting material radially from the center of the disk plates, and linear flow is simulated by using stainless parallel plane plates which are able to spread grouting material linearly. Apparatus are consist of upper and lower plates and industrial films with different thickness are placed between plates in order to simulate various crack widths. Laboratory verification tests with these apparatus were conducted with tap water (1cP at $20^{\circ}C$) as an injection material. Through the laboratory testing results, the best laboratory testing method is recommended in order to estimate grouting injection performance.

Recently, complaints or environmental problems caused by the noise and dust generated from crusher of the mine and quarry are emerging. Therefore mining facilities such as crushers and mills have been installed in an underground. In order to facilitate crusher equipments in the underground, excavation of large space is required and then the stability of the large space underground structure is an important issue. In this study, the blast experiments, which use a block of the limestone, are performed. Based on the blast experiments, the numerical model was prepared and simulated using dynamic fracture process analysis code(DFPA) with considering the rising time of applied borehole pressure and microscopic tensile strength variation. Comparing the non-dimensional crack length and no-dimensional tensile strength obtained from blast experiments and numerical analyses, the input parameters of DFPA code for predicting a radial tensile crack in limestone blasting were determined.
