The herringbone groove journal bearing (HGJB) has chevron type grooves on stationary or rotating member of the bearing so that they pump the lubricant inward the grooves when journal rotates. As a result, the pressure is generated around the journal so that the radial stiffness and dynamic stability are improved comparing to the plain journal bearing (PJB) when the bearing operates near the concentric condition. The narrow groove theory, conventionally adopted to simulate the concentric operation of HGJB, is limited to the infinite number of grooves. A numerical study of air-lubricated HGJB is presented for the finite number of grooves. The compressible isothermal Reynolds equation is solved by using Finite Element Method together with the Newton-Raphson iterative procedure and perturbation method. The solutions render the static and dynamic performances of HGJB. Comparison of present results with a PJB validates previously published finite difference solution. The HGJB's geometric parameters influence its static and dynamic characteristics. The optimum geometric parameters are presented for the air-lubricated HGJB in particular conditions.
Specially designed grooved journal bearings are installed in the main coolant pump for SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor) to support radial load on the rotating shaft. The canned motor type main coolant pumps are arranged vertically on the reactor vessel and filled with circulating primary coolant which is pure water. The main coolant pump bearings are lubricated with this coolant without any other external lubricant supply. Because lubricating condition is too severe for this bearing to generate proper hydrodynamic film, investigation of lubrication characteristics of the journal bearing is important to satisfy life constraint of whole pump system, and the results will be applied to the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the shaft system. The bearing is made of silicon graphite which has self$.$lubricating effect. A lubrication analysis method is proposed for this vertically grooved journal bearing in the main coolant pump of SMART, and lubricational characteristics of the bearings are examined in this paper.

The failures such as flaking, wear, crack and seizing caused by the high contact pressure accompanied with sliding motion between inner or outer ring and ball are potential failures of ball bearing. In this research, we have qualitatively selected the efficient test items through the analysis of the life and potential failures of ball bearing. The bearing's failures are related closely to the whole system in using the bearing. So, the bearing itself requires an estimation of life in order to opreate the system safely. We have tested ten ball bearings. Our research has applied both radial and axial direction force of maximum torque conditions simultaneously for the accelerated life testing. The result is established by employing the weibull plot and compared the predicted life of ball bearing to the experimental result.

It has been widely known that geometrical or form errors of ball bearings such as ball size error, ball waviness, inner and outer race waviness due to inherent manufacturing imperfection are one of the major sources of uncontrollable non-repeatable run-out (NRRO) vibration in HDD spindle motor. NRRO in HDD is also known to be the primary cause of limiting the storage capacity of HDD. In this paper, We performed vibration analysis for NRRO a ball bearing being used in 3.5" HDD spindle motor. To theoretically estimate NRRO considering the geometrical errors of ball bearing components, a simple three degrees of freedom model was proposed and then vibration analysis for axial and radial NRRO was conducted utilizing the measured geometric imperfection of a bearing with both the waviness magnitude and phase taken into account. Effects of bearing preload and clearance on NRRO was also investigated as an effort to predict their optimum values minimizing bearing NRRO.

Micro drilling by high-speed air bearing spindle is very useful manufacturing technology in electronic industry For the design of high speed air bearing spindle, there are considered stability of air bearing spindle, allowable load of air bearing, run out and tooling system design for micro drill's attach and remove. According to suggested details, we designed and manufactured high-speed air bearing spindle and carried out performance estimation such as run out, temperature change in running air bearing spindle, stiffness, chucking torque. Results are follows; Run out was measured under $5{\mu}m$ at air bearing spindle revolution $20,000\sim125,000rpm$. High speed air bearing spindle's temperature rose about $20^{\circ}C$ after 5 minutes from running and then was fixed. Allowable thrust load of spindle was 17kgf. Chucking torque of collet was 15kgfcm.

Active magnetic hearings allow much high surface speed than conventional ball bearings and therefore greatly suitable for high speed cutting. This paper describes a design and test of an active magnetic bearing system with 16-pole radial magnets. The spindle is originally designed for a CNC lathe and driven by outer motor with 5.5 kW power and maximum speed 10,000 rpm. Considering static load condition and geometric restrictions, radial magnet is designed 16-pole type for smaller outer diameter of the spindle system. Dynamic system characteristics such as natural frequency, critical speed, stiffness, damping and system stabilities are simulated with a rigid rotor model including direct feedback controller. The designed spindle system is realized with digital PIDD controller to compensate phase lag of PWM amplifier and magnet coils. With levitation and step response experiment the control system characteristics are tested, and the spindle is rotated up to 10,000 rpm stab1y.

Bearingless motors are the rotational electric machine which utilize a common magnetic structure for rotation and magnetic suspension. Since the bearing function is combined with the motor, the shaft length can be shortened resulting in higher critical speeds. Relationship between suspension force and current of bearingless motor is clearly derived by prior research. However, relationship between displacement of rotor and suspension force is not precisely defined. In this paper, we present model of bearingless motor describing the radial force variation due to the movement of the rotor. Using a distributed magnetic circuit and maxwell stress tensor, we derived a mathematical expression for the radial force. For a slotless bearingless motor, we are able to find an analytical model presented in the form of stiffness. For a slotted motor, we can compute the stiffness by semi-analytical analysis. This model is validated by a finite-element-analysis.

A newly devised linear flexure bearing (KIMM-LFB) for reciprocating machines is disclosed having improved tight gas clearance maintaining capability for better system performance. KIMM-LFB is an integrated device comprising an axially moving diaphragm with circumferentially arranged arc-shaped flexure blades secured between rim and hub spacers, which turn out to have higher radial stiffness than the one with circumferential tangent cantilever flexure blades. It is expected for KIMM-LFB to play a key role in designing long life, special purpose reciprocating machines such as spacecraft borne cryogenic refrigerators (cryocoolers) by providing frictionless, non-wearing, linear movement and radial support for the machines as well as a gas clearance seal by maintaining extremely tight clearances between piston and cylinder.

Squeeze film dampers(SFDs) are designed and analyzed for radial superconducting bearings. The designed SFDs are mounted on the superconductors submerged in liquid nitrogen such that the dampers should supply additional damping to the relatively underdamped superconducting bearing support. Basic theory of SFD with superconducting bearing are introduced. Rotordynamic simulations are provided to support the feasibility of the superconducting magnetic bearings mounted on SFDs for a horizontal flywheel energy storage system.

A rig was constructed to test the performance characteristics and compare the hydraulic forces exerted on a centrifugal type artificial heart impeller. A conventional shaft. seal and bearing system. while driven by a small electric motor. supported the impeller which was separated from the pump casing by a six degree of freedom force transducer (JR3 Ine). Radial (x. y) and axial (z) hydraulic forces were recorded and compared. At physiological operating conditions. the results indicate that the double entry/exit centrifugal pump encounters a smaller radial force and significantly reduced axial thrust. These experimental results are valuable in the design of a magnetic bearing system to suspend the impeller of a centrifugal artificial heart pump. This experimental technique may also be applied to evaluate the required capacity and predict the lifetime of contact bearings in marine pumps.
