In this paper, the single and multi-objective optimization of thin-walled conical tubes with different types of indentations under axial impact has been investigated using surrogate models called metamodels. The geometry of tapered thin-walled tubes has been studied in order to achieve maximum specific energy absorption (SEA) and minimum peak crushing force (PCF). The height, radius, thickness, tapered angle of the tube, and the radius of indentation have been considered as design variables. Based on the design of experiments (DOE) method, the generated sample points are computed using the explicit finite element code. Different surrogate models including Kriging, Feed Forward Neural Network (FNN), Radial Basis Neural Network (RNN), and Response Surface Modelling (RSM) comprised to evaluate the appropriation of such models. The comparison study between surrogate models and the exploration of indentation shapes have been provided. The obtained results show that the RNN method has the minimum mean squared error (MSE) in training points compared to the other methods. Meanwhile, optimization based on surrogate models with lower values of MSE does not provide optimum results. The RNN method demonstrates a lower crashworthiness performance (with a lower value of 125.7% for SEA and a higher value of 56.8% for PCF) in comparison to RSM with an error order of $10^{-3}$. The SEA values can be increased by 17.6% and PCF values can be decreased by 24.63% by different types of indentation. In a specific geometry, higher SEA and lower PCF require triangular and circular shapes of indentation, respectively.

Effects of injector position and momentum flux ratio on a vertical jet in a cross flow field were studied qualitatively and shown by using air and water. The experiment was carried out by fixing the momentum flux ratio and varying the position of the injector hole. Conversely, the injector hole position was fixed and the momentum flux ratio was varied. Image visualization was performed by a Shadowgraph technique using a high speed camera. The visualized images were compared for finding differences in spraying through Density Gradient Magnitude Image. It is observed that as the x/d of the apparatus increased the jet break up height decreases and the spray angle also decreases. When x/d is 0, the spray reaches the floor and ceiling at any momentum flux ratio.
This study investigated mechanical characteristics of pine trees in Yeongdong (Goseong-gun), Yeongseo (Hongcheon-gun), and Yeongnam (Bonghwa-gun) to define differences in the material quality among pine trees of the three regions. The compressive strength, hardness and shear strength of pine trees of each region were measured. There were no differences in the compressive strength of the juvenile woods among the regions, while the heartwood and sapwood in Bongwha generally showed the highest compressive strength followed by those in Hongcheon and in Goseong. The hardness of the cross-section of pines in Bonghwa was the highest, and in terms of the hardness of the radial and tangential sections, pines in Goseong topped the list.. There were no difference among heartwoods of each region in terms of the shear strength, but, but sapwood from Bonghwa had higher shear strength than those of the other two regions, which may be attributed to differences in tracheid length and microfibril angle among pines in each region. This study identifies the quality differences among pines of different region, and therefore, is expected to add value by helping choose the domestic pine tree material effectively and selectively, and also select a plus tree.

This study was carried out to analyze the properties of the gel propellant and spray characteristics according to the addition of fine particles. The multi-hole diameter was 0.4 mm to induce a high shear rate, and a kerosene gel propellant was prepared using 5 wt% of the Thixatrol ST and SUS304 of 100 nm. The experiment was conducted by fixing the supply pressure in the axial direction to 0.7 MPa and adjusting the supply pressure in the radial direction from 0.7 MPa to 2.1 MPa. Due to the addition of fine particles, pressure vibration during spraying, a small TMR(Total Momentum Ratio) of up to 0.19, and a phenomenon that the spraying angle rapidly increased to more than 70 degrees occurred.

We report on multi-wavelength observations of AA Ori, a Young Stellar Object in Orion-A star-forming region. AA Ori is known to have a pre-transitional disk based on infrared observations including Spitzer/IRS data. We construct its broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) by not only taking data in the optical and IR region but also including Herschel/PACS, JCMT/SCUBA, and SMA observational data. We use the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code (RADMC-3D) to reconstruct the SED with a viscous accretion disk model initialized by a radially continuous disk and finally having an inner and outer dusty disk separated by a dust-depleted radial gap. By comparing the model SEDs with different configurations of disk parameters, we discuss the limits to find a single solution of model parameters to fit the data. We suggest that some models with a modified inner disk surface density gradient and some degree of dust depletion in the inner disk can explain the AA Ori's SED, from which we infer that the inner disk of AA Ori has evolved. We present that model configurations of a pre-transitional disk with a large gap extended to 60-80 AU in a settled dusty disk of a few hundred AU size with a high inclination angle (~60°) also create model SEDs close to the observed one. To distinguish whether the disk has a just-opened narrow gap or a large gap, with an altered surface density of the inner disk extended to 10 AU, we suggest a further investigation of AA Ori with high angular resolution observations.
We have fabricated and characterized $32{\times}32$ photonic quantum ring (PQR) laser arrays uniformly operable with $0.98{\mu}A$ per ring at room temperature. The typical threshold current, threshold current density, and threshold voltage are 20 mA, $0.068A/cm^2$, and 1.38 V. The top surface emitting PQR array contains GaAs multiquantum well active regions and exhibits uniform characteristics for a chip of $1.65{\times}1.65mm^2$. The peak power wavelength is $858.8{\pm}0.35nm$, the relative intensity is $0.3{\pm}0.2$, and the linewidth is $0.2{\pm}0.07nm$. We also report the wavelength division multiplexing system experiment using angle-dependent blue shift characteristics of this laser array. This photonic quantum ring laser has angle-dependent multiple-wavelength radial emission characteristics over about 10 nm tuning range generated from array devices. The array exhibits a free space detection as far as 6 m with a function of the distance.
Two RADARSAT SAR images with different modes acquired by Canadian Space Agency to test the effectiveness of geological lineament extraction and spring water detection over the Cheju Island. Geological lineaments are poorly developed this basalt dominant volcanic island, but more linear features can be extracted when SAR and TM images are simultaneously analyzed than when TM image alone is used. This results mainly owe to the facts that RADARSAT SAR systems are able to provide data with different frequencies, azimuth, and incidence angles. Distribution of spring water along coast is poorly correlated with geological lineaments or drainage pattern, but those in middle range of mountain region are developed along geological lineaments. Detection of spring water using remotely sensed images are turned out to be very difficult to achieve. Radial shaped sea surface temperature anomaly derived from TM thermal band should be the best candidate for spring water, but the resolution is not high enough. We also investigate the normalized radar cross section (or sigma naught) converted from RADARSAT and ERS-1 SAR data but to discriminate the spring water effectively except where relatively large water mass is observed on land side. Speckle noise and irregularity in physical sea surface condition are the serious obstacles for this application. ERS-1 SAR image acquired in low incidence angle was more useful for geological lineament estimation and water body study than RADARSAT SAR images with high incidence angles. Therefore the selection of incidence angle is critical in geological and spring water applications of SAR images, and low incidence angles less than about 30$^{\circ}$ are recommended to monitor the Cheju volcanic island.

Screw-in effect is one of the unintended phenomena that occurs during the root canal preparation with nickel-titanium rotary files. The aim of this study was to compare the screw-in effect among various nickel-titanium rotary file systems. Six different nickel-titanium rotary instruments (ISO 20/.06 taper) were used: $K3^{TM}$ (SybronEndo, Glendora, CA, USA), $M_{two}$ (VDW GmbH, Munchen, Germany), NRT with safe-tip and with active tip (Mani Inc., Shioya-gun, Japan), ProFile$^{(R)}$ (Dentsply-Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and ProTaper$^{(R)}$ (Dentsply-Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland). For ProTaper$^{(R)}$, S2 was selected because it has size 20. Root canal instrumentations were done in sixty simulated single-curved resin root canals with a rotational speed of 300 rpm and single pecking motion. A special device was designed to measure the force of screw-in effect. A dynamometer of the device recorded the screw-in force during simulated canal preparation and the recorded data was stored in a computer with designed software (LCV-USE-VS, Lorenz Messtechnik GmbH, Alfdorf, Germany). The data were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple range test for post-hoc test. P value of less than 0.05 was regarded significant. ProTaper$^{(R)}$ produced significantly more screw-in effects than any other instruments in the study (p < 0.001). $K3^{TM}$ produced significantly more screw-in effects than $M_{two}$, and ProFile$^{(R)}$ (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference among $M_{two}$, NRT, and ProFile$^{(R)}$ (p > 0.05), and between NRT with active tip and NRT with safe one neither (p > 0.05). From the result of the present study, it was concluded, therefore, that there seems significant differences of screw-in effect among the tested nickel-titanium rotary instruments. The radial lands and rake angle of nickel-titanium rotary instrument might be the cause of the difference.

Most of vehicle detection studies using the existing general lens or wide-angle lens have a blind spot in the rear detection situation, the image is vulnerable to noise and a variety of external environments. In this paper, we propose a method that is detection in harsh external environment with noise, blind spots, etc. First, using a fish-eye lens will help minimize blind spots compared to the wide-angle lens. When angle of the lens is growing because nonlinear radial distortion also increase, calibration was used after initializing and optimizing the distortion constant in order to ensure accuracy. In addition, the original image was analyzed along with calibration to remove fog and calibrate brightness and thereby enable detection even when visibility is obstructed due to light and dark adaptations from foggy situations or sudden changes in illumination. Fog removal generally takes a considerably significant amount of time to calculate. Thus in order to reduce the calculation time, remove the fog used the major fog removal algorithm Dark Channel Prior. While Gamma Correction was used to calibrate brightness, a brightness and contrast evaluation was conducted on the image in order to determine the Gamma Value needed for correction. The evaluation used only a part instead of the entirety of the image in order to reduce the time allotted to calculation. When the brightness and contrast values were calculated, those values were used to decided Gamma value and to correct the entire image. The brightness correction and fog removal were processed in parallel, and the images were registered as a single image to minimize the calculation time needed for all the processes. Then the feature extraction method HOG was used to detect the vehicle in the corrected image. As a result, it took 0.064 seconds per frame to detect the vehicle using image correction as proposed herein, which showed a 7.5% improvement in detection rate compared to the existing vehicle detection method.
In this paper, isotropically consolidated drained triaxial compression test device installed with bender elements is used to measure stress, stain, and shear wave velocity, from which the characteristics of shear strength and Poisson'ratio are investigated. The results show that there is a unique relationship between maximum shear modulus determined from shear wave velocity and effective vertical stress at failure, which is defined as the sum of vertical and radial stresses at failure. The correlation is very useful since it is possible to predict the shear strength and internal friction angle from shear wave velocity. In addition, Poisson's ratio is determined from measured axial and volumetric strains. It is demonstrated that the range of measured Poisson's ratio is between 0.15 and 0.6, and increases with the axial strain. The ratios at axial strains smaller than 0.2% corresponds to the range recommended in design codes, which are approximately from 0.3~0.35. However, at axial strains exceeding 1%, the measured ratios are between 0.5 and 0.6. It is therefore shown that use of ratios commonly used in practice will result in pronounced underestimation at large strains.
