Propagation and Radiation Characteristics of Elliptical Corrugated Waveguide (타원형 커루게이트 도파관의 전파 및 복사 특성)

  • In this paper, we analyze theoritically the propagation and radiation characteristics for elliptical corrugated waveguides. The solutions of wave equations in an elliptic cylinder system are obtained in terms of Mathieu functions of 1st and 2nd kind. The electromagnetic fields in the elliptical corrugated waveguide can be represented by series and products of angular and radial Mathieu functions. By using impedence matching at the boundary between the inner region and the slot region, characteristic equations are derived. Then the characteristic equation is solved for $HE_{11}$ mode which is dominant mode in the elliptical corrugated waveguide and the fields in the aperture is calculated. And the propagation pattern for the elliptical corrugated waveguides is calculated through the field equivalence principle.

  • Using the "MAGIC" code, computer simulation is performed to design a cathode structure which provides a radial distribution of electron beam density matching the field distribution of the $TM_{05}$ mode. Thus, very narrow band $TM_{05}$ mode microwave radiation can be generated in an open end waveguide. The simulation results show that the vircator can indeed be operated at the selected frequency 10.2GHz with a very narrow bandwidth(${\Delta}{\omega}/{\omega}$ < 1%).

  • Electromagnetically coupled coaxial dipole (ECCD) array antenna with and without short-ended termination is investigated theoretically. The integral equations are derived for the structure by use of the Fourier transform and mode expansion of radial waveguide. The integrals appearing in the integral equations are evaluated along the branch cut instead of real axis for a faster convergent integral. The effects of slots and dipoles, short-ended termination length, and dielectric coating on the radiation characteristics are presented. Radiation pattern of the structure is also investigated. The results of the present method are compared with those of the commercial EM simulator and good agreement is found.

X-Band 6-Way Waveguide Power Divider Using Inductive Post (유도성 포스트를 활용한 X-Band 6-Way 도파관 전력 분배기)

  • This paper describes the 6-way power divider to be used as a feeding structure of the waveguide array antenna generating the plane wave at the near distance. The SMA connector has been connected at the center of the power divider in order to feed the radiating element. The six output ports made of waveguide are positioned on the peripheral of the divider. This paper proposes the method utilizing the inductive post in order to decrease the return loss. The height of the feeding pin, the diameter of the inductive post, and the distance between the feeding pin and inductive post have been investigated, and as a result, the power divider has been optimized. The simulated and measured results show the low return loss of about -40 dB. The calculated and measured transmission coefficients are -7.78 dB and -8.06 dB, respectively. The output power of the six waveguide port show equal-amplitude and equal-phase distribution. Since the power divider proposed in this paper can be expanded to the divider having several output ports, it could be easily applied to the various array antennas.

Measurement of High Temperature Anisotropic Elastic Constants of Zr-2.5Nb Pressure Tube Materials by Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy (초음파공명분광법에 의한 Zr-2.5Nb 압력관 재료의 고온 이방성 탄성계수 측정)

  • Anisotropic elastic constants of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube materials were determined by a high temperature resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS). The resonant frequencies were measured using alumina wave-guides and wide band ultrasonic transducers in a small furnace. The rectangular parallelepiped specimens were fabricated along with the axial, radial and circumferential direction of the pressure tube. A nine elastic stiffness tensor for orthotropic symmetry was determined in the range of room temperature ${\sim}500^{\circ}C$. As the temperature increases, the elastic constant tensor, cij gradually decreases. Higher elastic constants along the transverse direction compared to those along the axial or radial direction are similar to the case of Young's modulus or shear modulus. A crossing of shear elastic constants along axial direction and radial direction was observed near $150^{\circ}C$. This fact corresponds to the crossing of c44 and c66 of single crystal zirconium.

  • In this study, it proposes a mode converter that is relatively easy to implement and can shorten the transmission line length of the final combining port and it was fabricated and tested by applying it to an 8-way spatial combiner. The proposed mode converter converts the signal converted from the doorknob-shaped circular disk connected to the ground into the TM01 mode by opening it in the circular waveguide. The 8-way waveguide spatial combiner is designed and implemented so that 8 signals input from the H-plane are combined in a circular waveguide at the center, and the final combining mode is TM01. The test results confirmed excellent performance with an insertion loss of less than 0.4dB and a combining efficiency of 95% or more. In addition, it was confirmed that it is suitable for high output by calculating the breakdown voltage and discharge threshold power of the new mode conversion structure through electric field analysis. The results confirmed through this study are expected to be applicable to high-power, high-efficiency SSPA in various fields in the future.

124-142 GHz Dual-Polarization Superconducting Mixer Receiver for Korean VLBI Network

  • We have developed superconducting mixer receivers for 129 GHz VLBI observation in Korean VLBI Network(KVN). The developed mixer has a radial waveguide probe with simple transmission line LC transformer as a tuning circuit to its 5 series-connected junctions, which can have 125-165 GHz as operation RF frequency. For IF signal path a high impedance quarter-wavelength line connects the probe to one end of symmetric RF chokes. DSB receiver noise of the mixer was about 40 K over 4-6 GHz IF band whereas we achieved about uncorrected SSB noise temperature of 70 K and better than 10 dB IRR in 2SB configuration with 8-10 GHz IF band. Insert-type receiver cartridges using the mixers have been assembled for all three KVN stations. On-site performance summary in commissioning phase is presented.

Development of a Far Field type Megasonic for Nano Particle Removing (나노입자 제거용 Far Field 메가소닉 개발)

  • Improved far field type(improved type) megasonic applicable to the cleaning equipment of single wafer processing type has been developed. In this study, to improve the uniformity of acoustic pressure distribution(APD), we utilize far field with relatively uniform APD, piezoelectric ceramic with a triangle hole in its center to prevent standing wave resulted from radial mode, and reflected wave from the wall of waveguide. On the basis of these methods, two analysis models of improved type were designed to which piezoelectric ceramic of different shape of electrode attached, and APD were analyzed by means of finite element method, and then one of them was selected by analysis results, finally, the selected model was fabricated. Test results show that the fabricated is better in the uniformity of APD than the imported and the conventional, also the fabricated shows high particle removal efficiency of 92.3% using DI water alone as a cleaning solution.

Design of the helical array antenna for the domestic broadcast satellite (국내 위성방송 수신용 헬리컬 어레이 안테나의 설계)

  • The helical array antenna is designed for domestic DBS(Directcast Satellite) reception. The antenna diameter is determined 30cm with 168 element s to cover from Moojoo (beam center) to Seoul. The helical antenna with 2-turns and 4.deg. pitch angle is chosen as array elements for good axial ratio and antenna height. In array antenna design, row distance is 0.787.lambda., array distance is 0.824.lambda. in the same row. The feed is constructed using the radial waveguide to decrease the height of antenna. The measured values of the designed antenna are not only satisfied with the design goals but also similar to theoritical values except the axial ratio.

Insert-type receiver cartridges employing the mixers have been under commission for KVN stations.
