  • High Resolution Range Profile-Jet Engine Modulation imagery first introduced in 2005 carries out radar target recognition by localizing the position of the jet engine installed on the aircraft target. This paper presents a new approach for estimating the jet engine position in the HRRP-JEM image based on the eccentricity of a complex signal. It can effectively evaluate the contribution of the JEM component to the radar received signal in a range bin of the HRRP-JEM image. Therefore, the localization is expected to be performed more quantitatively and reliably by pinpointing the range bin corresponding to the jet engine position where the JEM contribution is maximized. The simulation results of realistic aircraft models validated the effectiveness of the proposed concept.

  • Inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images can be generated by radar which radiates the electromagnetic wave to a target and receives signal reflected from the target. ISAR images can be widely used to target detection and recognition. This paper proposed a method of generation of high resolution ISAR images by synthesizing frequency spectrums of each stepped chirp waveform in one burst and sub-sampling in frequency domain. This process is performed over entire bursts during coherent processing interval. Conventional ISAR image generation method using stepped frequency waveform has a severe problem of short unambiguous range, loading to ghost phenomenon. However, this problem can be resolved by the proposed method. In simulations, we generate high resolution ISAR image of the moving target which is Boeing-737 aircraft model composed of several ideal point scatterers.

  • In synthetic aperture radar (SAR) based ship detection application, false alarms frequently occur due to various noises caused by the radar imaging process. Among them, radio frequency interference (RFI) and azimuth smearing produce substantial false alarms; the latter also yields longer length estimation of ships than the true length. These two noises are prominent at cross-polarization and relatively weak at co-polarization. However, in general, the cross-polarization data are suitable for ship detection, because the radar backscatter from background sea surface is much less in comparison with the co-polarization backscatter, i.e., higher ship-sea image contrast. In order to improve the ship detection accuracy further, the RFI and azimuth smearing need to be mitigated. In the present letter, Sentinel-1 VV- and VH-polarization intensity data are used to show a novel technique of removing these noises. In this method, median image intensities of noises and background sea surface are calculated to yield arithmetic tendency. A band-math formula is then designed to replace the intensities of noise pixels in VH-polarization with adjusted VV-polarization intensity pixels that are less affected by the noises. To verify the proposed method, the adaptive threshold method (ATM) with a sliding window was used for ship detection, and the results showed that the 74.39% of RFI false alarms are removed and 92.27% false alarms of azimuth smearing are removed.

  • An air-to-ground guidance missile aimed to hit a main battle tank(MBT) should detect a ground moving target and estimate the target position to guide. In this paper, we detect a front ground moving target by using FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) and estimate the position by forward-looking SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) via scanning certain front ground section by steering a beam with narrow beamwidth left to right mechanically. Also, by MLE(Maximum Likelihood Estimation), degree of how fast the target approach or recede from the radar can be figured out from the estimated radial velocity of the moving target. Subsequently, we generate a radar image via corrected matched filter from phase history including the radial velocity.

  • The classical image reconstruction for stripmap SAR is the range-Doppler imaging. However, when the spotlight SAR system was envisioned, range-Bowler imaging fumed out to fail rapidly in this SAR imaging modality. What is referred to as polar format processing, which is based on the plane wave approximation, was introduced for imaging from spotlight SAR data. This paper has been studied for the raw data processing schemes in the spotlight-mode synthetic aperture radar. we apply the wavefront reconstruction scheme that does not utilize the approximation in spotlight-mode SAR imaging modelity, and compare the performance of target imaging with the polar format inversion scheme.

  • In order to ensure a balance between economic development and a healthy Mekong Basin environment supporting natural resources diversity and productivity critical to the livelihood of its 65 million inhabitants, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) has been investigating the use of radar to remotely characterize and monitor the diversity, complexity, size and connectivity of the Basin's aquatic habitats. The PACRIM AIRSAR Mission provided an opportunity to evaluate the usefulness of radar technology to derive information for assessing, forecasting and mitigating possible cumulative and long-term impacts of development on the natural environment and the people's livelihood. This paper presents the results of mapping wetland cover types using multi-polarimetric radar for an area of the north-western corner of the Tonle Sap basin with data acquired from the AIRSAR Mission in September 2000. The implementation of a newly developed segmentation classification routine used to derive the image classification is described and the results of a fieldwork campaign to check the classification is presented.

  • In this paper, although Radar has been used for a long time, integrated scheme with visual camera is an efficient way to enhance marine surveillance system. Camera image is focused by radar information but it is easy to be fallen into inaccurate operation due to environmental noises. We have proposed a method to filter the noises by moving average filter and Kalman filter. It is proved that Kalman filtered results preserves linearity while the former includes larger variance.

  • From the 1978 Seasat synthetic aperture radar(SAR) to present systems, spaceborne SAR has demonstrated the capability to image the Earth's ocean and land features over broad areas, day and night, and under most weather conditions. The application of SAR for surveillance of commercial fishing grounds can did in the detection of illegal fishing activities and provides more efficient use cf limited aircraft or patron craft resources. In the area of vessel traffic monitoring for commercial vessels, Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) which uses the ground-based radar system has some difficulties in detecting moving ships due to the limited detection range cf about 10 miles. This paper introduces the field testing results of ship detection by RADARSAT SAR imagery, and proposes a new approach for a Vessel Monitoring System(VMS), including VTS, and SAR combination service.
