A WSR-88D Radar Observation of Chaff Transport and Diffusion in Clear Sky

  • To investigate the distribution of air pollutants dispersion in the horizontal wind fields, a chaff release experiment was carried out by an airplane. The temporal and spatial variations of a chaff plume from an elevated point source using the WSR-88D(NEXRAD) radar. The observed profiles of radar reflectivity were compared with the Gaussian diffusion model at slightly unstable atmospheric condition. The present study shows that the distributions of radar reflectivity from chaffs and their concentration by the model are in general agreement with time variation. The dispersion coefficients in downwind($\sigma$(sub)x) and crosswind($\sigma$(sub)y) spread data exceeded what has generally been found at Pasquill and Brigg\`s estimates. As a result, it was clearly shown that horizontal and vertical diffusion coefficients are more accurately determined as compared with theoretical coefficients. At longer diffusion distances(than 10km), a radar observation provided the determination of maximum range and diffusion height more qualitatively, too.

Borehole radar for environment study

  • Borehole radar is one kind of GPR, but it can be used in deep boreholes, and it has many advantages compared with low frequency borehole EM tools, and surface GPR. We have developed various techniques on borehole radar for environment study. The hardware development includes broadband radar system with the functions of polarimetry and inteferometry. By using these systems, we tested the measurements to applications such as subsurface fracture characterization, subsurface cavity detections. In this paper, we will describe the advantages of the advanced radar technology for environment studies, and show some experiment results.

  • This paper discusses the system design of a synthetic aperture radar system based on a pulse-echo radar. The design consists of an ultra-wide bandwidth antenna, an amplitude modulation, timing stabilities, and high speed a/d conversions with an equivalent-time sampling. Experiment results show that GPR(Ground Penetrating Radar) can be used to explore buried electric facilities.

  • 초 광대역 레이더는 숨겨진 물체를 찾는데 많은 장점을 가지고 있기 때문에, 지표 투과 레이더나 수풀 투과 레이더와 같은 투과레이더에 널리 이용되고 있다. 초 광대역 레이더의 종류 중에 하나인 잡음 레이더는 간섭 환경에 강한 특성을 가지고 있다. 그러나 일반적인 잡음레이더는 고속의 아날로그 디지털 변환기가 필요하여 광대역 레이더로 제작하는데 어려움이 있다. 본 논문에서는 간섭에 강한 특징을 가지면서 고속의 아날로그 디지털 변환기가 필요하지 않은 가상 잡음 레이더 시스템이 연구되었다. 또한, 초 광대역 시스템이 저주파에서 구현되었고, 이는 실험으로 성능이 검증되었으며, 제안된 가상잡음 레이더 시스템의 개념도 증명되었다.

  • Doppler weather radar is an important tool for meteorological research. Through several decades of development, Doppler weather radar has enormous progress in understanding, detection and warning of meso and micro scale weather system. It makes a significant contribution to weather forecast and weather disaster warning. But the large amount of data process limits the application of Doppler weather radar. This paper proposed for fast weather radar data processing based on CUDA. CDUA is a powerful platform for highly parallel programming developed by NVIDIA. Through running plenty of threads, radar data can be calculated at same time. In experiment, CUDA parallel program can significantly improve weather data processing time.

Detection of Human Vital Signs and Estimation of Direction of Arrival Using Multiple Doppler Radars

  • This paper presents a non-contact measurement method of vital signal by the use of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) bio-radar system, configured with two antennas that are separated by a certain distance. The direction of arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm for coherent sources was applied to detect vital signals coming from different spatial angles. The proposed MIMO bio-radar system was composed of two identical transceivers sharing single VCO with a PLL. In order to verify the performance of the system, the DOA estimation experiment was completed with respect to the human target at angles varying between $-50^{\circ}$ and $50^{\circ}$ where the bio-radar system was placed at distances (corresponding to 50 cm and 95 cm) in front of a human target. The proposed MIMO bio-radar system can successfully find the direction of a human target.

항공기용 추적레이더 시험을 위한 시험장비의 설계 및 제작 (A Design and Fabrication of Test Equipment for Airborne Tracking Radar Test)

  • This paper proposes a design and fabrication of the test equipment that is implemented as a part of the airborne tracking radar inspection under the environment of indoor simulation. This test equipment provides controlling the operation status of airborne tracking radar and replicating the velocity and range information of target by generating a variety of target signal. This is mainly composed of radar operation controller, target signal generator, horn antenna driving devices. Radar operation controller is able to perform the controlling of radar operation mode and monitoring in real time by serial communication. Target signal generator is generated doppler signal and range delayed signal using virtual target of RF-band. Horn antenna driving devices perform a role of target simulating exercise. In the end, the performance is demonstrated using experiment results of test equipment for airborne tracking radar.

수치모델에서 레이더 자료동화가 강수 예측에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Radar Data Assimilation in Numerical Models on Precipitation Forecasting)

  • Accurately predicting localized heavy rainfall is challenging without high-resolution mesoscale cloud information in the numerical model's initial field, as precipitation intensity and amount vary significantly across regions. In the Korean Peninsula, the radar observation network covers the entire country, providing high-resolution data on hydrometeors which is suitable for data assimilation (DA). During the pre-processing stage, radar reflectivity is classified into hydrometeors (e.g., rain, snow, graupel) using the background temperature field. The mixing ratio of each hydrometeor is converted and inputted into a numerical model. Moreover, assimilating saturated water vapor mixing ratio and decomposing radar radial velocity into a three-dimensional wind vector improves the atmospheric dynamic field. This study presents radar DA experiments using a numerical prediction model to enhance the wind, water vapor, and hydrometeor mixing ratio information. The impact of radar DA on precipitation prediction is analyzed separately for each radar component. Assimilating radial velocity improves the dynamic field, while assimilating hydrometeor mixing ratio reduces the spin-up period in cloud microphysical processes, simulating initial precipitation growth. Assimilating water vapor mixing ratio further captures a moist atmospheric environment, maintaining continuous growth of hydrometeors, resulting in concentrated heavy rainfall. Overall, the radar DA experiment showed a 32.78% improvement in precipitation forecast accuracy compared to experiments without DA across four cases. Further research in related fields is necessary to improve predictions of mesoscale heavy rainfall in South Korea, mitigating its impact on human life and property.

교육용 레이다 시스템의 제작 및 실험 (Construction and Experiment of an Educational Radar System)

  • 원격탐사에서 주로 사용되는 레이다 시스템에는 인공위성, 항공기 및 지상용 SAR 시스템을 비롯하여 산란계와 도플러 레이다 등이 있다. 이러한 시스템들은 고가의 장비들로 구성되며, 운용하는 데에 매우 전문적인 기술을 필요로 한다. 일반적인 대학이나 연구소에서는 장비의 구성과 운용에 대한 경험을 얻기 힘들기 때문에 레이다 및 SAR를 이용한 새로운 적용 분야를 이해하고 개척해 나아가는데 필수적인 하드웨어적 원리를 배우고 실습하기에 어려운 실정이다. 이를 극복하기 위하여 이 논문에서는 미국 MIT에서 제공하는 Cantenna 시스템의 설계도를 기반으로 한 레이다 시스템을 저가로 제작하고 실험한 내용을 소개한다. 제작된 레이다는 총 세 가지의 방식으로 운영되었는데, 첫째, 도플러 레이다를 이용하여 이동하는 차량의 속도를 측정하였고 둘째, 거리해상도를 가지는 레이다 방식을 이용하여 이동하는 두 물체의 움직임을 측정하였다. 마지막으로, 지상용 SAR 방식으로 방위각 해상도를 높여 이차원의 영상을 획득하였다. 추가적으로 영상화에 사용되는 Deramp-FFT 알고리즘과 ${\omega}-k$ 알고리즘의 비교 및 안테나의 위치 측정 오차에 따른 영향을 분석하기 위해 시뮬레이션을 수행하였다. 향후 샘플링 주파수의 증가, I/Q 샘플링 및 보다 안정적인 회로를 구현하면 무인 항공기에 탑재할 수 있는 가벼운 SAR 시스템으로도 발전할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

해상표적에 대한 레이더 Glint 영향 측정 및 분석 (Measurement and Analysis for Radar Glint Effect of Maritime Target)

  • In this paper, the glint effect of maritime target to a radar system was analyzed by simulation and field test with a barge and corner reflectors. From the experiment, we proposed a glint measurement method of a real maritime target and it was indicated that the glint effect between the simulation results and real measurement is similar. Also it was founded that the glint effect is related to the relative amount of RCS(Radar Cross Section) difference among major scattering point and minor scattering points. Finally, the experiment showed the glint effects of the rotating barge with some different combinations of scattering points.
