  • The dynamic and static torque characteristics of a three dimensional control panel installed behind a guide panel were investigated in a wind tunnel. The panel was tested for various wind speeds, angles of attack and positions of the panel. The effects of the rotational speed and the amplitude of the sinusoidal motion were also studied. The increasing rate of torque coefficients with the angular position of the panel is small when the panel remains in the wake region, but is linear when it reaches the external stream. In case of a sinusoidal motion of the pannel, a hysterisis appears in the dynamic torque. The hysterisis becomes strong as the wind speed and the angular speed of the panel increase. The unsteady torque is considered quasi-steady when the angular speed is less than 5.5rad/s, i.e. the reduced frequency is less than 0.035.

  • Objective: This study to identify the mechanism of head impact that occurs during youth soccer game with regard to head injuries in sports. Method: Ten male subjects (age: 10.0±2.0 yrs.) were participated during 10 soccer practices spread out over a time period of 10 weeks. During each soccer game, the participants agreed and wore the X-Patch (wireless accelerometer, gyroscopes). The X-Patch records the head impact mechanics, such as peak linear acceleration (PLA), peak rotational acceleration (PRA), peak rotational velocity (PRV), Head Injury Criterion (HIC), and the location of impact. Results: A total of 501 impacts to the head were measured over the 10 soccer games, PLA 17.8±10.4 g, PRA 3168±2442 rad/s2; PRV 16.1±10.6 rad/s; HIC 11.7±34.2. The severity of impact was classified into 3 ranges; low 10~39 g (482 impacts); medium 40~69 g (17 impacts); and high >69 g (2 impacts). There are no significant differences in PLA and HIC (p=0.08, p=0.15), however PRA and PRV show the differences (p<.05) between each of the participants. For the analysis comparing between the soccer games, there are no significant differences in PLA, PRA, PRV and HIC (p=0.11, p=0.13, p=0.14, p=0.05). Conclusion: Our results indicated that there were significant differences between athletes, especially in terms of rotational acceleration, whereas there were significant differences in linear and rotational based variable between each of the soccer games. Although the vast majority of impacts were below 39 g there were 2 potentially dangerous impacts above 69 g. It is important that future research continuous to measure head impact mechanics during soccer to help understand head injury mechanisms to ensure the safety of athletes.

  • Background: The capability for DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) repair is crucial for inherent radiosensitivity of tumor and normal cells. We have investigated the clinicopathologic significance of DNA repair gene expression in nasopharyngeal (NP) carcinoma. Materials and Methods: A total of 65 NP cancer patients who received radiotherapy were included. The immunopositivity to Ku 70, DNA-PKcs, MRN, RAD50, XRCC4, and LIG4 were examined in all tumor tissues. Results: The patients comprised 42 males and 23 females, with a median age of 56 years (range, 18-84). The expression levels of RAD50 (0,+1,+2,+3) were 27.7%, 32.3%, 21.5%, and 18.5%. LIG4 (${\pm}$) were 43.1% and 56.9% respectively. The 5-year OS rate of patients with LIG4 (${\pm}$) were 90% and 67.9%, respectively (p=0.035). The 5-year TTP rate of patients with LIG4 (${\pm}$) were 75.9%, 55.5%, respectively (P=0.039). Conclusions: Our results suggest the possibility of predicting the radiosensitivity of NP cancer by performing immunohistochemical analysis of LIG4.

  • We report detection of short-term flux variability in multi-epoch observations and intraday variability in polarized emission at millimeter-wavelength from S5 0716+714 using Korean VLBI Network (KVN) radio telescopes. Over the whole observation epochs, the source shows significant inter-month variations at K- and Q-band with modulation indices of 19% at K-band and 36% at Q-band. In each epoch, the source shows monotonic flux increase in Epoch 1 and 3, and monotonic flux decrease in Epoch 2 and 4. We found an inverted spectrum with mean spectral indices of -0.57 in Epoch 1 and -0.15 in Epoch. On the contrary, we found relatively steep indices of 0.24 and 0.17 in Epoch 2 and Epoch 4, respectively. In the study of intraday variability of polarization, we found significant variations in the degree of linear polarization at 86 GHz, and in polarization angle at 43 and 86 GHz during ~10 h. The spectrum of the source is quite flat with spectral indices of -0.07 to 0.07 at 22-43 GHz and -0.23 to 0.04 at 43-86 GHz. The measured degree of the linear polarization ranges from 2.3% to 3.3 % at 22 GHz, from 0.9% to 2.2 % at 43 GHz and from 0.4 % to 4.0 % at 86 GHz, yielding prominent variations at 86 GHz over 4-5 h. The linear polarization angle is in the range of 4 to $12^{\circ}$ at 22 GHz, -39 to $81^{\circ}$ at 43 GHz, and 66 to 119 at 86 GHz with a maximum rotation of $110^{\circ}$ at 43 GHz over ~4 h. We estimated the Faraday rotation measures (RM) ranging from -9200 to 6300 rad m-2 between 22 and 43 GHz, and from -71000 to 7300 rad m-2 between 43 and 86 GHz, respectively. The frequency dependency of RM was investigated, yielding a mean power-law index, a, of 2.0. This implies that the polarized emission from S5 0716+714 at 22-86 GHz moves through a Faraday screen in or near the jet of the source.

  • In this paper, we investigate derivations on the noncommutative Banach algebra $L^{\infty}_0({\omega})^*$ equipped with an Arens product. As a main result, we prove the Singer-Wermer conjecture for the noncommutative Banach algebra $L^{\infty}_0({\omega})^*$. We then show that a derivation on $L^{\infty}_0({\omega})^*$ is continuous if and only if its restriction to rad($L^{\infty}_0({\omega})^*$) is continuous. We also prove that there is no nonzero centralizing derivation on $L^{\infty}_0({\omega})^*$. Finally, we prove that the space of all inner derivations of $L^{\infty}_0({\omega})^*$ is continuously homomorphic to the space $L^{\infty}_0({\omega})^*/L^1({\omega})$.

  • This study presents a new sensorless commutation method for brushless direct current motors to replace Hall sensor signals with virtual Hall signals. The importance of the proposed method lies in the simultaneous elimination of the phase shifter and the low-pass filters, which makes the method simple and cost-effective. The method removes high ripple switching noises from motor terminals, thereby decreasing motor losses. The proposed method utilizes unfiltered line voltages with notches caused by current commutation. Hence, specific sign signals are defined to compensate for the effects of commutation noise. The proposed method is free from phase delay that originates from low-pass filters. The method directly produces virtual Hall signals, and thus, it can be interfaced with low-cost commercial commutation integrated circuits based on Hall sensors. Simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness and validity of the proposed method.

  • A case of mediastinal seminoma is presented. A male driver, 27 years old Korean, has been suffered from substernal pain, cough and moderate swallowing difficulty since 5 months prior to this admission. At the time of onset, he visited at a local clinic to find some mass in his anterior mediastinum on chest P-A and lateral X-ray check. Recently, intermittent hiccups with much aggravated dysphagia forced him to visit our hospital, and admitted for radical resection under the impression of anterior superior mediastinal tumor of thymus origin. Median sternotomy was done and total resection of the tumor of 8.0X11.0X3.5cm was done without any specific complication and biopsy of the tumor revealed as primary mediastinal seminoma of the mediastinum. Supplementary prophylactic irradiation therapy was done with a tumor dose of 4,000 rad in 4 weeks after operation. Postoperative hospital course was uneventful and patient was joyful with his occupation for 3 months after discharge.

  • Our previous report demonstrated that the rhp51$^+$, a recA and RAD51 homolog of the fission yeast, encodes three transcripts of 1.9, 1.6 and 1.3 kb which have at least six polyadenylation sites. The 3'-end of the gene alone can direct the formation of multiple, discrete 3'ends of the transcripts. To identify the regulatory element required for the 3'-end formation of -rhp51$^+$ deletion mapping analysis was performed. Northern blot analysis revealed that the 254-bp DNA fragment including 4 distinct poly (A) sites downstream from the Hindlll site, is crucial for normal 3'-end formation. Deletion of the 3'-terminal AU rich region caused appearance of read-through RNA, leading to enhancement of survival rate of the rhp51 deletion mutant in response to DNA damaging agent, methylmethane sulfonate (MMS). The results imply that the rhp51$^+$ system may be useful for molecular analysis of the 3'-end formation of RNA in the fission yeast.

  • In this paper we apply the Exp-function method to obtain traveling wave solutions of three nonlinear partial differential equations, namely, generalized sinh-Gordon equation, generalized form of the famous sinh-Gordon equation, and double combined sinh-cosh-Gordon equation. These equations play a very important role in mathematical physics and engineering sciences. The Exp-Function method changes the problem from solving nonlinear partial differential equations to solving a ordinary differential equation. Mainly we try to present an application of Exp-function method taking to consideration rectifying a commonly occurring errors during some of recent works.
