  • With the rapid increase in the quantity of goods transported worldwide, companies are now started to show great interest in unmanned automated warehouses along with related research and development due to the increase of warehouse efficiency and reduction warehouse manpower. In a number of small warehouses, shuttle rack-based layouts that can handle inventory flow flexibly. However, the shuttle rack-based logistics center does not operate in case of emergency situations (faults, power outages, etc.), which seriously affects the efficiency and inventory management of the entire logistics center. Accordingly, in shuttle rack-based logistics center, we have classified various shuttle passages and RTV passages by layout and have analyzed its characteristics and types, along with derived reliability for each layout. The loading rate was also derived differently according to the number of passages, and have compared and analyzed reliability and loading rate for each layout.

  • It has been concluded that the performance of class-based storage policy is better than the performance of random storage policy in the literature. However, the rack shortage problem assigned to the 1st class items makes the decision hard to apply the class-based storage policy in practice. In this paper, a new common zone concept is introduced between two classes to resolve the problem with class-based storage policy. The common zone is the area to accept items from both classes. An AS/RS model is developed for computer simulation study and the effect of common area sizes with various AS/RS operation conditions is analyzed.

  • We study n-class-based storage policy for an automated storage/retrieval system (AS/RS) and derive the closed form expressions of expected travel times under single command cycle. In order to confirm the correctness of the derivations, we consider both discrete and continuous storage racks, and show that the expressions for expected travel times of discrete rack converge to those of continuous one. We also derive the expected travel times when the coordinate locations for storages or retrievals are triangularly distributed and we try to solve class layout problem using the obtained results. Numerical examples are given in case of 3-class-based storage policy.

  • The marginal nuclear criticality analysis for the high density spent fuel storage at a PWR plant was carried out by using the HELIOS and CASMO-3 codes. More than 20 % of the calculated reactivity saving effect is observed in this analysis. This mainly comes from the adoption of some important fission products and B-10 in the criticality analysis. By taking burnup and boron credits, the high capacity of the spent fuel storage rack can be more fully utilized, reducing the space of storage. Larger storage for a given inventory of spent fuel should result in remarkable cost savings and mort importantly reduce the risks to the public and occupational workers.

  • A fire risk assessment in rack-type warehouse is typically determined based on the following factors: 1. flammability and fire loads for storage of goods, packing materials, and pallet, 2. a ceiling height of warehouse indoor spaces, and 3. height, arrangement, and spacing for storage racks. For appropriately extinguishing and protecting the fire in warehouses, therefore, it is necessary to classify combustibles considering the previously mentioned factors and to develop design Standards for sprinkler system. As the first step to apply automatic sprinkler system to domestic warehouses, this study investigated characteristics for commodity distribution and warehouse configuration using 28 warehouses in five distribution complexes located in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. In addition, this study analyzed Standards for commodity distribution adopted in USA, Europe, and Japan. Using the field survey analysis, this study was aimed to provide baseline data to prepare for Commodity Classification Standard for warehouses in South Korea.

  • In most distribution centers, products are received from the suppliers in units of pallet, stored in a rack, moved to the picking area for replenishment, picked according to customer orders, and shipped to customers. In some distribution centers, however, replenishment is made in not a whole pallet but only a portion of a pallet load, mainly due to the limited space in the order-picking area; as a result, partially loaded pallets occupy cells in the rack. As the number of slow-moving items increases, more cells are occupied by partially loaded pallets so that fewer empty cells are available for storing full, incoming pallets. This will necessitate the construction or leasing of additional storage space, which will entail significant cost. As an alternative, we propose pallet consolidation, which involves moving a partial load to another partially-loaded pallet in order to create one empty cell in the rack. In this paper, we define three pallet consolidation problems; formulate each problem as a binary integer programming model; and present heuristic algorithms for the problems. The average performance of each of the proposed heuristics is evaluated using simulation.

  • Sales of the Korean clothing industry grew to 16.9 percent on-year in 2010, but the growth rate dropped to 3 percent from 2011 to 2016 and the overall market began to slump to 1.1.6 percent in 2017. The competitiveness of clothing companies is also a major sector in logistics capability, and the average logistics cost of domestic clothing companies is 8.3 percent of sales in 2011, higher than the average 8 percent of domestic industries, and 36.4 percent of the total storage cost in 2011, higher than the 28.8 percent share of the total storage cost of domestic companies. As domestic production conditions such as wage hikes and labor disputes worsened in the 1990s, production facilities were rapidly moved overseas, which led many clothing companies to have no production facilities or a minimal production base in Korea and focus on marketing and design capabilities. The total storage capacity and storage efficiency of the logistics center became very important as the products were changed to the form of mass warehousing and small-volume forwarding. Research shows that building column spacing, a model of this research, can affect the amount of hanger rack storage empirically, so for sustainable growth of clothing companies, it is necessary to improve competitiveness in the logistics market by reducing costs and improving efficiency to overcome difficulties in corporate management. Because logistics costs are 8.3 percent and operating profit to sales ratio is 2 percent, it is expected that operating profit will increase by 41.5 percent if logistics costs are reduced by 10 percent. If 10% of storage cost is saved based on storage cost, operating profit is expected to increase by 15% To strengthen the competitiveness of the clothing industry, a reduction in logistics costs is essential. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide hints that logistics experts can have empirically small amounts in reducing storage costs through column spacing adjustment of logistics centers that have not been dealt with statistically until now, and to contribute to the continued growth of clothing companies and the development of the domestic logistics industry.

  • This study deals with the automated storage/retrieval systems (AS/RS) where the rack is discrete and the random storage assignment rule is adopted. New storage policies named FNSC (first no-cost zone, second closest-open location) and FNSH (first no-cost zone, second a half side closest-open location) are proposed. Simulation results indicate that performance of FNSH is slightly lower than that of the SCL but it does not need much time to perform. The "stay" strategy of S/R machine is examined as a means of increasing the frequency of dual command.
