Physiological changes in thoroughbred racehorses during the race were investigated by measuring concentrations of metabolites and exercise-related hormones before and after a race. The conversion point from anaerobic to aerobic exercise during the race was estimated subsequently. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein of 53 thoroughbreds at different times -three h before and 45 min after- for measuring the concentrations of glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), lactate, uric acid, ammonia, insulin, adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) and cortisol according to the race distance. In accordance with the race distance, each metabolite increased in concentration compared with the level before the race. The level of glucose, in particular, increased from $56.18{\pm}3.20$ mg/dl before the race to $148.82{\pm}8.82$ mg/dl after the race for horses that raced 1,400 m, showing a significant increase of 165% (p<0.001). The concentration of NEFA rose from $76.77{\pm}5.59$ uEq/L to $335.85{\pm}35.39$ uEq/L, up 337% (p<0.01) after a 1,400 m race. Exercise-related hormones also showed similar changes. The level of insulin dropped the most in horses that raced 1,400 m, by 42%, from $0.97{\pm}0.18$ to $0.56{\pm}0.05\;{\mu}g/L$ (p<0.5); however, ACTH and cortisol jumped significantly at 1,800 m, from $20.17{\pm}2.12$ to $551.45{\pm}91.33$ pg/ml (p<0.5) and $1.13{\pm}0.16$ to $5.66{\pm}0.45\;{\mu}g/dl$ (p<0.01), respectively, representing the highest increase. Therefore, based on the changes in glucose, NEFA and insulin levels before and after the race, it was concluded that the race distance of 1,400 m represents the point where racehorses make a conversion from anaerobic to aerobic exercise.

Objective: This study aimed to identify the different wind speed categories and competitive level among windsurfers through GPS variables to provide the useful information on the development of training programs for enhancing windsurfers' performance. Method: Data from 69 female athletes who participated in 27 races during the 2018-2019 windsurfing season were used for the analysis. Average board speed, total race time, total distance, upwind race time, downwind race time, beam reach race time were collected through GPS. Unconfirmed data were excluded along with penalty point data. The wind conditions were classified as light, light to medium, medium, medium to heavy, and heavy wind, the competitive levels were classified as level 1, level 2, and level 3. Results: As for the average board speed, the level 1 or level 2 group showed higher board speed than the level 3 group in all wind conditions except for the light wind. The total race time and upwind race time showed less time in level 1 or level 2 group than level 3 group in all wind conditions. The total distance, downwind race time and beam reach race time showed less distance and time in level1 group than level 3 group under sufficient wind conditions. Conclusion: Our results show that the aerobic capacity to sustain pumping during upwind course in wind conditions below 15 kts effects performance. In wind conditions of 15 kts or more, indicated that the board control for the fast board speed and small distance required during up, down, beam reach courses had an effect on competition performance. This information can be provided to windsurfers and coaching as basic data for training programs to improve performance.
Objective This experimental study was designed to investigate effects of Sam-chool-gun-bi-tang administration during carbohydrate loading diet to long distance runners on changes of the urine metabolic responses. Materials and Methods All subjects were divided randomly with two groups, Sam-chool-gun- bi-tang administration Group (N=5) and control group (N=5) and attended on domestic marathon race. The urine samples were collected by 15ml conical tube at rest, a day before race, immediately after race, a day after race. These samples were used to analyze for the factors of the change on metabolic responses. At First, the factors of the routine urine test were checked; RBC, WBC, glucose, protein, ketone, bilirubin, urobilirubin. Next, the factors on the changes of the electrolyte metabolism and creatinine were checked; $Na^+ $, $Cl^-$, $K^+$, $Ca^{+ +}$, Creatinine. Results 1. Urine RBC, WBC, glucose, protein, ketone, bilirubin, urobilirubin were all denoted negatively (-). 2. Urine pH response in Sam-chool-gun-bi-tang administration group was shown significant difference between two groups at immediately after race. 3. Urine $Na^+$ response in Sam-chool-gun- bi-tang administration group was shown significant difference between two groups at immediately after race. 4. Urine $K^+$ response in Sam-chool-gun-bi-tang administration group was shown significant difference between two groups at immediately after race and a day after race. 5. Urine $Cl^-$ response in Sam-chool-gun- bi-tang administration group was increased at immediately after race, but was not shown significant difference between two groups. 6. Urine $Ca^{+ +}$ response in Sam-chool-gun-bi-tang administration group was decreased gradually, but was not shown significant difference between two groups. 7. Urine Creatinine response in Control group was decreased significantly at immediately after race, but was not shown significant difference between two groups. Conclusion According to the above results, it was shown that Sam-chool-gun- bi-tang administration had the positive effects on changes of the urine matabolic responses during carbohydrate loading diet to the long distance runners.
During the 5 years period(93-197) of Seoul racecourse Thoroughbred racing, 2i963 holies took an active part in Seoul Racecourse and 61,181 horses entered the racing.400 horses(305 : 1 time, 76 :2 times, 19 :3 times, total : 514 cases) had bled(EIPH) from their nostils after their races. Incidence of bleeding horses from the 21963 racehorses was 13.5%, and incidence of bleeding cases from the 61,181 horses was 0.84%. The average racing frequence (1.05 times/1 month) of bleeders was more than that(0.8 times/1 month) of total race-horses. There was tendency to higher incidence of bleeding at older in age, female in sex, England/ Ireland horses in origin, higher grade in performances heavier in body weight increased, larger in weight to be carried, mid or longer in racing distance, handicap race, spring in season. Relationship did not exist between bleeding and respiratory disease. These results suggested that frequent entering into the race should be controlled. And body weight regulation with conditioning is recommended far reducing incidence of EIPH. It is supposed to prevent bleeding that decrescent performance horses should not be entering long distance or handicap race.

Objective: The length of anterior-posterior commissure (AC-PC) in racial groups, age, gender of patients with deep brain stimulation (DBS) and pallidotomy were investigated. Methods: From January 1996 to December 2003, 211 patients were treated with DBS and pallidotomy. There were 160 (76%) Caucasians, 35 (17%) Hispanics, 12 (5%) Asians and 4 Blacks (2%). There were 88 males and 52 females in DBS-surgery group and 44 males, 27 females in pallidotomy group. Mean age was 58 year-old. There were 19 males and 19 females and mean age was 54.7 years in the control group. Measurements were made on MRI and @Target software. Results: The average AC-PC distance was 24.89 mm (range 32 to 19), which increased with aging until 75 years old in Caucasian and also increased with aging in Hispanic, but the AC-PC distance peaked at 45 years old in Hispanic. The order of AC-PC distance were $24.6{\pm}2$ mm in Caucasian, $24.6{\pm}2.24$ mm in Asian, 24.53 mm in Black, $23.6{\pm}1.98$ mm in Hispanic. The average AC-PC distance in all groups was 24.22 mm in female who was mean age of 56.35, 25.28 mm in male who was mean age of 60.19 and $24.5{\pm}2$ mm in control group that was excluded because of the difference of thickness of slice. According to multiple regression analysis, the AC-PC distance was significantly correlated with age, race, and gender. Conclusion: The AC-PC distance is significantly correlated with age, gender, and race. The atlas of functional stereotaxis would be depended on the Variation of indivisual brain that can influenced by aging, gender, and race.
Inbred lines of Chinese cabbage KU-101 (resistant line against Plasmodiophora brassicae race race 6) and CS-113 (susceptible line) were crossed and their progeny lines F$_1$, BC$_1$F$_1$, F$_2$, and F$_3$ were produced for the construction of the genetic linkage map of R brassicae race 6-resistant Brassica campestris ssp. pekinensis genome. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was applied to compare between parents and their f$_2$ progenies with a total of 192 probes and 5 restriction enzymes. The constructed RFLP map covered 1,104 cM with a mean distance between genetic marker of 8.0 cM, and produced 10 linkage groups having 121 genetic loci. The loci of P. brassicae race 6 (CR6)-resistant Brassica genome were determined by interval mapping of quan-titative trait loci (QTL), which resulted from bioassay using the same race of the fungi in P3 population. Resistant loci were estimated in numbers 1 (Gl) and 3 (G3) linkage groups. In the regression test, Gl had a value of4.8 logarithm of odd (LOD) score, while C3 had values of 4.2-7.2. Given these results, the location of the CR6-resistant loci within the Brassica genome map can now be addressed.
As the nature of triathlons is competition in three successive sports, triathletes experience elevated levels of stress on the body that are absent in single-sport athletic events, and consequently there are more potential medical problems to prepare for. Triathletes can also experience problems such as hypothermia, heat illness, excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation, musculoskeletal injuries and trauma, immunosuppression, and haemolysis. Depending on the potentiality of such above-listed problems occurring in any given race, race organizers will prepare preventative measures and treatments accordingly. Olympic distance is not the only triathlon racing distance. Sprints, which are normally around half the Olympic distance, are common distances, as well as Long (2 km swim, 80 km bike, 20 km run), Ironman (3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, 42 km run), and ultra-distance events varying in length. Races of longer duration normally result in a higher percentage of athletes experiencing the above-mentioned medical problems, as well as inducing additional health risks such as hyponatraemia. Minimizing the occurrences of serious health issues is possible through the following means: carefully preparing for the probable race-day weather conditions; proper management and organization of the race; preparing an extensive water-safety and ground-course safety plan; distributing necessary nutrition along the course; and stressing the importance for athletes to have proper knowledge concerning race nutrition, biomechanical technique, physical preparation, and utilization of safe equipment. While risks of competing in triathlon are many, the instances of such medical problems are not excessive, and the triathlon has a reputation of being a reasonably safe sport as long as athletes with high risk take added precautions.
The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for racing performance traits of thoroughbredracehorses, using a total of 58,124 racing records of 4,200 horses at Gwacheon Racing Park collected from January 2002 to December 2006. This study measured start one furlong time, last three and last one furlong times, and the resulting furlong time averages were 14.2 seconds, 39.9 seconds and 13.9 seconds, respectively. Furlong time means a split time measured based on a 1/8-mile (or approximately 201 m) distance and finished time means total racing time measured from start position to finish line. In the shortest distance races of 1,000 m, the average last three and last one furlong time was fastest at 38.7 seconds and 13.6 seconds, respectively. The correlation between finished time and start one furlong time decreased as the race distance increased, and the same trend was recognized from the correlation between finished time and last three furlong time. In short distance races of 1,400 m or less, the starting ability was found to be an important trait. The average speed was highest at 56 km/h for a 1,000 m race and lowest at 53.2 km/h for a 1,700 m race. Heritabilities of the start one furlong time, the last three and last one furlong time were estimated to be 0.337, 0.245 and 0.210, respectively; and repeatabilities for them were 0.452, 0.353 and 0.309, respectively. Phenotypic and genetic correlations between the start and the last one furlong time were negative at -0.141 and -0.155, respectively.
We describe the development of a polymerase chain reaction method for the rapid, precise, and specific detection of the Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) K3a race, the bacterial blight pathogen of rice. The specific primer set was designed to amplify a genomic locus derived from an amplified fragment length polymorphism specific for the K3a race. The 1,024 bp amplicon was generated from the DNA of 13 isolates of Xoo K3a races out of 119 isolates of other races, pathovars, and Xanthomonas species. The assay does not require isolated bacterial cells or DNA extraction. Moreover, the pathogen was quickly detected in rice leaf 2 days after inoculation with bacteria and at a distance of 8 cm from the rice leaf 5 days later. The results suggest that this PCR-based assay will be a useful and powerful tool for the detection and identification of the Xoo K3a race in rice plants as well as for early diagnosis of infection in paddy fields.
The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of participation in the 622 km hyper-ultra-marathon on hepatic metabolism and renal function in middle-aged men. Healthy middle-aged male amateur ultra-marathoners between the ages of 40 and 60. Blood was collected at the pre-race, immediately after 300 km, 622 km hyper-ultra marathon race, 72 hours (3 day) and 144 hours (6 day) after the race, AST (aspartate aminotransferase), ALT (alanine aminotransferase), ALP (alkaline phosphatase), ${\gamma}$-GTP (gamma glutamyl transferase), T-Bil (total bilirubin), D-Bil (direct bilirubin), T-protein (total protein), albumin, uric acid, BUN (blood urea nitrogen), creatinne were analyzed. ALP was significantly increased at 300 km, 622 km, day 3 and day 6 than the pre-race. ${\gamma}$-GTP, T-protein, albumin, uric acid, BUN and creatinine were not significantly different between the distances and the recovery period respectively. AST and ALT were significantly increased at 300 km, 622 km, day 3 and day 6 than the pre-race, respectively (P<0.05) at day 3 and day 6 they showed significant decrease from 300 km and 622 km, respectively (P<0.05). T-Bil and D-Bil increased significantly at 300 km and 622 km, respectively (P<.05) and significantly decreased at day 3 (P<0.05) compared to the pre-race, at day 3 and day 6 they were decreased significantly than 300 km and 622 km, respectively (P<0.05). In conclusion, no disturbance of renal function was observed according to the distances and between the recovery period of 622 km hyper-ultra marathon race, but reversible hepatocyte function could be degraded and some hemolysis of blood vessels was induced.
