  • This study was conducted to suggest a method to determine weighting values of each parameter of the RMR system considered with geologic characteristics of a study area. This study reviewed the weighting values of the RMR system for the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks distributed in Ulsan area. Based on the data of field survey at the study area, a multiple regression analysis was used to set up an optimal weighting values of the RMR parameters. For the multiple regression analysis, each parameter of the RMR and the slope gradient were regarded as the independent variable and the dependent variable, respectively. The analysis result suggested a modified weighting values of the RMR parameters as follows; 30 for the intact strength of rock; 18 for RQD; 8 for spacing of discontinuities; 32 for the condition of discontinuities; and 12 for ground water.

  • In this study, the relationship between in situ seismic wave velocities and RMR (rock mass rating) was investigated in a test bed for the examination of the basis of rock classification (RMR) based on seismic wave velocity. The seismic wave velocity showed a monotonous increase with depth. It was also found that there was no systematic correlation between the seismic wave velocity (Vp) and other parameters (RQD, joint spacing, UCS, rock core Vp, and RMR) collected at the same depth of the same borehole. However, correlative relation was observed among RMR, RQD, and joint spacing. On the other hand, when all the data in the borehole (three holes) are examined without considering the depth, Vp still shows no correlation with RMR parameters (e.g., correlative coefficient for uniaxial compressive strength and joint spacing are 0.039 and 0.091, respectively), but Vp shows weak correlative relation with RMR and RQD (correlative coefficient for RQD and RMR are 0.193 and 0.211, respectively). Thus, it is found that it is difficult to deduce physical properties of rock mass directly from seismic wave velocities, but the seismic wave velocity can be used as a tool to approximate rock mass properties because of weaker correlation between Vp and RMR with RQD. In addition, the velocity value of for soft and moderate rocks suggested by widely used construction standards is slower than that of the observed velocity, implying that the standards need to be examined and revised.

  • Total displacement under non-reinforcement is a quantitative index of rock mass behavior during tunnel excavation and depends widely upon geological characteristics. The primary purpose of this study is to suggest a rock mass evaluation method, well representing tunnel behavior during excavation, according to rock type. A 3-D numerical analysis was carried out, with consideration of the shape of tunnel section, excavation condition and so forth, in a sedimentary rock-based tunnel, and total displacements under non-reinforcement according to rock mass class were calculated. Finally, quantification analysis was carried out to assess correlation of the total displacement with RMR parameters. As the result, a modified RMR system fer quantification of rock mass behavior during tunnel excavation is suggested.

  • Because of using the same rating ranges for every rock types the RMR or the Q-system could not usually consider local geological characteristics They also could not present sufficiently the engineering anisotropy of rocks. The canonical correlation analysis was carried out with 3 kinds of face mapping data obtained from granite, sedimentary rock and phyllite in order to clarify a discrepancy between rock types. According to analysis results, as a type of rocks changes, RM factors have different influences on the total rating of RMR.

  • In general, RMR classification system is used for the support design of a tunnel. Face mapping during excavation and RMR-based rock classifications are conducted in order to provide information for complementary changes to preliminary survey plans and for continuous geological estimations in direction of tunnel route. Although they are ever so important, there are not enough time for survey in general and sometimes even face mapping is not available. Linear regression analysis for the estimation of mediating RQD and condition of discontinuities, which require longer time and more detailed observation in RMR, was performed and optimum regression equations are suggest as the result. The geological data collected from tunnels were analyzed in accordance with three rock types as sedimentary rock, phyllite and granite to see geological effects, generally not been considered in previous researches. Parameters for the regression analysis were set another RMR factor.

  • Tunnel behavior measured by monitoring during construction is a main item for safety evaluation and it depends widely upon local geological characteristics. To assess in this study how much the geological factors influence on tunnel behavior for each RMR factor, a quantification analysis was carried out using tunnel face maps and measurements as explanatory variables and dependent variables, respectively. The results showed that average significance of the influence of RMR factors - R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5, on tunnel displacements are 17.0%, 20.4%, 20.4%, 11.6% and 30.6%, respectively, and this probably indicates that the groundwater condition played a significant role for the tunnel displacement.

  • It is crucial to decide reasonably the parameters necessary for design through research on the characteristics of rock in order to analyze stability of rock structure. This article has conducted both pressure meter test, uniaxial and triaxial compression test to the areas of andesite or tuff located in local regions such as Yeosu, Gwangju, Yangsan, Busan, and Daejeon and has comparatively analyzed previously proposed estimative formulas. According to the result of estimating the deformation modulus through using the damping coefficient suggested by Nicholson & Bieniawski, when RMR is less than 60, it is desirable to use the result of the pressure meter test considering the damping coefficient. If the RMR value is over 60, however, the formula suggested by Kim Gyo-won has been proved to be the most applicable. Moreover, according to the result of comparing the RMR, adhesion, and angle of internal friction, both the adhesion and angle of internal friction best correspond to the formula proposed by Tsuchiya. Comparatively analyzing the relations between the rock deformation modulus and RMR and also suggesting the formula of calculating the shear strength parameter to use the RMR value, this study did not include the deformation modulus and shear strength parameter as factors to decide the RMR index. Since result can differ by several factors, it will be necessary afterwards to suggest practical estimative formulas applicable to the actual spots of Korea.

  • A Suggestion of In-situ Rock Mass Evaluation and Correlation between Rock Mass Classfication MethodsThe purpose of this study is to find out rock mass classification method which is practically applicable to a field and to consider a correlation between the new method and the old method. Rock mass is an aggregate of separated blocks. To express the aggregate, the properties of both intact rock and rock mass should be considered. In this study, therefore, parameters for rock mass description are classified into rock strength and rock structure. Indices for parameters evaluation are obtained from old method and the strength and structure property of rock is described by using those indices. Value of 25 is allocated to each parameter obtained. $RMR_{basic}$ =0.86(X=Method)+14.47 is derived between $RMR_{basic}$ and this study and $RMR^*$ = 0.87(X-Method)+9.20 is derived between revised RMR and this study. Coefficient of determination is $R^2$=0.841 and $R^2$=0.846 each.

  • In this study, the validity of items of RMR system is evaluated and the applicability of this system to the data measured in Korean sites if discussed. Database was constructed from 139 sites, which are composed of subways, railway tunnels and road tunnels. These sites are located nationwide. Analysis shows that original classification of Bieniawski is valid although it was derived empirically. But it has considerable rating difference (error) in the result of Korean application. Thus new classification systems of KRMRI and KRMR2 are suggested, which are deduced from the Korean database. The former includes adjusted ratings and the latter adopts two more items. These are deduced by artificial neural network because it is difficult to select \`characteristic value'to estimate rock quality.
