  • Viscoplastic response and densification behaviors of Ti-6AI-4V powder compacts under uniaxial compression are studied at room and high temperatures with various initial relative densities and strain rates. The yield function and strain-hardening law proposed by Kim and co-workers were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to compare experimental data with finite element calculations for porous Ti6A14V powder compacts. Displacement-relative density, displacement-load relations and deformed geometry of Ti-A14V powder compacts were compared with finite element results. Density distributions in Ti-6AI-4V powder compacts were also measured and compared with finite element results.

  • A micromachined piezoelectic cantilever transducer, which works both as a microphone and as a microspeaker, has been fabricated and tested. The 2000*2000*3.mu.m .sap2. cantilever has oxide(ZnO)piezoelectric thin film on a supporting layer of low-pressure chemical-vapor-deposited(LPCVD)low-stress siliconnitride. A highlight of the fabrication process which may also be relevant for other micromachined stuctures is the technique for producing a flat, multilayer cantilever. The measured microphone sensitivity is fairly constant at 2 mV/.mu.bar in the low frequency range and rise to 20 mV/.mu.bar at the lowest resonant frequency of 890 Hz. The 2 mV/.mu.bar sensitivity is the highest report to data for a microphone with a micromachined diaphragm. When measured into a 2 cm/sap3 coupler with 4V (zero-park)drive,the microspeaker output sound pressure level(SPL) is 75 dB at 890 Hz. It increases to approximately 100dB SPL at 4.8kHz with 6V(zero-park)drive. The measured microphone frequency response agrees well with the results of an ABAQUS simulation.

  • A number of developments have occurred over recent years that are being used commercially or have the potential to increase the milk yield and consequently the efficiency of dairy cows. Bovine growth hormone is the most widely known of several attempts that have been made to alter the metabolic endocrinology of dairy cows to increase the rate of milk secretion. The factors affecting the milk yield response to growth hormone, growth hormone-releasing factor, thyroxine and placental lactogen as well as to the immuno-neutralization of somatostatin are briefly considered. Secondly, the recent greater understanding of the mechanism by which the milk yield is increased following more frequent milking, which has resulted from the identification and characterization of the feedback inhibitor of lactation (FIL) protein, is reviewed. The identification of this protein provides new avenues of research which may lead to a reduction in the rate of decline in milk yield with advancing lactation or to undiminished milk yields despite a reduction in frequency with which the animals are milked.

  • This research was conducted to find out what the general globalization trends of Korean fashion enterprises are, and what the factors required the Korean fashion enterprises to improve the global competitiveness under the globalized circumstances are. The data were collected from the survey by questionnaire on Korean leading fashion enterprises and the Directory of Companies Branching out abroad in 2000/2001(Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, 2000). The Results of the research are as follows: first, Korean fashion enterprises expanded evenly worldwide in the sales and distribution functions while relying heavily on Asian countries for manufacturing functions; Secondly, the globalization of Korean leading fashion enterprises was progressed, but still remains at the stage of the sales of manufacturing capability or the sales of low costs products rather than at the stage of manufacturing products of high added-value or the sales of design or marketing capability. Thirdly, the factors for the global competitiveness of the Korean fashion enterprises are related to capability of low cost, quick response, product development, marketing, internationalization and high value added.

  • Interworking of legacy TC application and CORBA-BASED one is important to satisfy emerging market demands of the rapid introduction of new multimedia services and building of scalable, flexible, and interoperable service control architecture. For this, we develop generic TC/CORBA gateway on interworking between. TC and CORBA system Generic TC/CORBA gateway can be used for interworking in many fields of telecommunication service control such as INAP, MAP, other TC-based application parts, and mobility management of IMT-2000. Finally, we propose the object pool mechanism for efficient management of TC-user objects and it is helpful for enhancement of scalability and reduction of the response time of remote service operations.

  • In this study, the three dimensional pile-soil dynamic interaction analysis of the railway bridge pile foundation was performed using SASSI 2000 program and the applicability of SASSI 2000 about an evaluation of the seismic stability of a pile foundation was examined. The numerical analysis was executed on the two site of actual construction and input properties such as the acceleration of bedrock were estimated by one dimensional seismic response analysis using the Pro-SHAKE. Consequently, all the piles of the subject of investigation showed that displacement occurred within a permitted limit and the shear force and moment largely occurred at the point where the soil stiffness varied rapidly.

  • According to research currently developed by several authors (including the present ones) a multimode approach to the aeroelastic instability can be appropriate for suspension bridges with very long span and so with close natural frequencies. Extending that research, this paper deals in particular with: i) the role of along-wind modes, underlined also by means of the flutter mode representation; ii) the effects of a variation of the mean wind speed along the span. A characterisation of the response in the time domain by means of an energetic approach is also discussed.

  • Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI) is a payload on the Korean Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) to perform global ocean color monitoring for the study of biological oceanography. HOMPSAT was launched 21 December 1999. The radiometric performance of OSMI is analyzed for various gain settings in the viewpoint of the instrument developer for OSMI calibration and application based on its ground performance data measured before launch. The radiometric response linearity and dynamic range are analyzed and the dynamic range is compared with the nominal input radiance for the ocean and the land. The noise equivalent radiance (NER) corresponding to the instrument radiometric noise is compared with the radiometric resolution of signal digitization (1-count equivalent radiance). The best gain setting of OSMI for ocean monitoring is recommended. This analysis is considered to be useful for the OSMI mission and operation planning, the OSMI image data calibration, and users' understanding about OSMI image quality.

  • We study the rheological properties of concentrated polymer solution and the melt under simple shear and elon-gational flow using Brownian dynamicssimulation. In order to describe the anisotropic molecular motion, we modifiedthe Giesekus' mobility tensor by incorporating the finitely extensible non-linear elastic (FENE) spring force into dumbbell model. To elucidate the nature of this model, our simulation results are compared with the data of FENE-P ("P"standsfor the Perterin) dumbbell model and experiments. While in steady state both original FENE and FENE-P models exhibit a similar viscosity response, the growthof viscosity becomes dissimilar as the anisotropy decreases and the flowrate increases. The steady state viscosity obtained from the simulation well describes the experiments including the shear-thinning behavior in shear flow and viscosity-thinning behavior in elongational flow. But the growth of viscosity oforiginal FENE dumbbell model cannot describe the experimental results in both flow fields.

  • Thallium(I) selective electrodes based on meso-alkyl substituted calix[4]pyrroles such as, meso-octamethyl-calix[4]pyrrole (L1), meso-octaethylcalix[4]pyrrole (L2) and meso-tetraspirocyclohexylcalix[4]pyrrole (L3) as sensor molecules have been pre pared and tested. The conditioned electrode (E4) incorporating L3gave best results with a wide working concentration range of 10-5.5 ~10-1 M near-Nernstian slope of 56.0 mV/decade of activity and detection limit of 10-6.0 M. This electrode exhibited a fast response time of 30 s and high selectivity over Na+ , K+ and other metal ions with only Ag+ interfering. The electrode works well in the pH range 2.0-11.0 and can be successfully employed for the determination of Tl+.This proposed electrode was also used as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of Tl+.
