In this study, an equivalent boundary conditions (BCs) determination method is developed numerically for a panel reinforced concrete (RC) slab to realistically analyze the deformation and fatigue behaviors of a bridge RC slab. For this purpose, a finite element analysis of a bridge RC slab is carried out beforehand to calculate the stiffness of the bridge RC slab, and then the equivalent BCs for the panel RC slab are determined to achieve the same stiffness at the BCs to the obtained stiffness of the bridge RC slab at the corresponding locations of the bridge RC slab. Moreover, for the simulation of fatigue behaviors, fatigue analysis of the panel RC slab is carried out employing a finite element method based on a numerical model that considers the bridging stress degradation. Both the determined equivalent BCs and the BCs that have been typically applied in past studies are employed. The analysis results confirm that, in contrast to the panel RC slab with typically used BCs, the panel RC slab with equivalent BCs simulate the same bending moment distribution and deformation behaviors of the bridge RC slab. Furthermore, the equivalent BCs reproduce the extensive grid crack pattern in the panel RC slab, which is alike the pattern normally witnessed in a bridge RC slab. Conclusively, the panel RC slab with equivalent BCs behaves identical to the bridge RC slab, and, as a result, it shows more realistic fatigue behaviors observed in the bridge RC slab.
In this paper, an averaged constitutive model of concrete and reinforcing bars for RC structure and path-dependent Ohsaki's model for soil are applied, and an elasto-plastic interface model having thickness is preposed for seismic analysis of underground RC subway station structure. A finite element analysis technique is developed by applying aforementioned constitutive equations and verified through seismic analysis of underground RC subway station. Then, failure mechanisms of the RC subway station structure under seismic action are numerically derived. Then, failure modes and damage levels of the station are also analytically evaluated for the cases of several designs of the underground RC station.
The real situation of an underground reinforced concrete(RC) structure with the surrounding soil medium subjected to seismic load is quite difficult to be simulated through an expensive work and, even if it is possible to arrange such an experiment, it will be too expensive. So development of analytical method can be applied usefully to seismic design and seismic retrofit through an analysis of seismic behavior and seismic performance evaluation. A path-dependent constitutive model for soil that can estimate the response of soil layer is indispensible for dealing with kinematic interaction of RC/soil entire system under seismic loads. And interface model which deals with the dynamic interaction of RC/soil entire system is also necessary. In this study, finite element analysis program that can consider path-dependent behavior of RC and soil, and interfacial behavior between RC and soil is developed for rational seismic analysis of RC/soil entire system. Using this program, nonlinear behavior of interface between RC and soil is analyzed, and the effect of interfacial behavior to entire system is investigated.
As BIM application continues to increase in civil engineering, in this study, 3D information model for RC(Reinforced Concrete) bridge pylon was developed and verified its effectiveness at the structural-design stage. To define 3D information model of RC A-Type pylon, characteristics of pylon were analyzed and 3D model structure was constructed. The 3D information model, one of the core product of BIM, manages all information generated during all life-cycle of a structure and consequently maximizes the efficiency of utilizing information. Also, this study proposes interface module between input data in structural analysis and 3D model of RC pylon. The module can create the input data for non-linear structural analysis. It is essential to study on method of developing 3D information model and propose a structural analysis model by utilizing 3D model for the effective use of BIM techniques in construction industry. The results of this study can be used as the base data for developing the 3D information model of RC pylon in the structural analysis field.
This study surveyed damage to small and medium-sized RC slab bridges, the largest in number in Korea. Four common types of damage were identified, and their static and dynamic structural behaviors were examined through structural analysis. The degree of damage was selected as an analysis parameter for three superstructures of RC slab bridges. After structural analysis, a damage assessment process was proposed that can be used as the basis for establishing maintenance yplans for these bridges. The results of the present study can be used for the safety management of RC slab bridges, classified as bridges suspected of safety flaws or requiring maintenance in load-carrying capacity tests.
In the present study the behavior of fire and the residual strength of fire-ignited RC slabs are investigated by experimental tests and numerical simulations. The fire tests of RC slabs were carried out in a furnace using the ISO 834 standard fire. The load capacity of the cooled RC slabs that were not loaded during the fire tests was evaluated by additional 3 point bending tests. The influence of the proportion of PP (polypropylene) fibers in the RC slabs on the structural behavior of the RC slabs after the fire loading was investigated. The results of the fire tests showed that the maximum temperature of concrete with PP fiber was lower than that of concrete without PP fiber. As the concrete was heated, the ultimate compressive strength decreased and the ultimate strain increased. The load-deflection relations of RC slabs after fire loading were compared by using existing stress-strain-temperature models. The comparison between the numerical analysis and the experimental tests showed that some numerical analyses were reliable and therefore, can be applied to evaluate the ultimate load of RC slabs after fire loading. The ultimate load capacity after cooling down the RC slabs without PP fiber showed a considerable reduction from that of the RC slabs with PP fiber.
The main objective of this study is to analytically investigate the effectiveness of different strengthening solutions in upgrading the seismic performance of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings in Nepal. For this, four building models with different structural configurations and detailing were considered. Three possible rehabilitation solutions were studied, namely: (a) RC shear wall, (b) steel bracing, and (c) RC jacketing for all of the studied buildings. A numerical analysis was conducted with adaptive pushover and dynamic time history analysis. Seismic performance enhancement of the studied buildings was evaluated in terms of demand capacity ratio of the RC elements, capacity curve, inter-storey drift, energy dissipation capacity and moment curvature demand of the structures. Finally, the seismic safety assessment was performed based on standard drift limits, showing that retrofitting solutions significantly improved the seismic performance of existing buildings in Nepal.
