The performance of the daylighting in buildings depends on building site and shape. As an energy saving design strategy, daylighting is a key issue in green building design. In this paper, the influence of the adjacent or obstructed building on daylighting performance of the office building in urban area was analyzed. A typical office building about 20 storeys with obstructed buildings has been modeled and simulated using Radiance. The parametric simulations have been performed to analyze the influence of the daylighting performance (illuminance, luminance) of the analyzed office. The results show that the possibility of the glare was decreased when the obstructed building is located in south, also the illuminance level was significantly decreased. When the obstructed building is located in north, the changes of the illuminance level and luminance possibility were somewhat small compared to the unobstructed condition. The daylighting performance of the analyzed building was most affected by the obstructed building in winter season.
Geostationary Ocean Colour Imager (GOCI) is the first ocean color instrument that will be operating in a geostationary orbit from 2010. GOCI will provide the crucial information of ocean environment around the Korean peninsula in high spatial and temporal resolutions at eight visible bands. We report an on-going development of imaging and radiometric performance prediction model for GOCI with realistic data for reflectance, transmittance, absorption, wave-front error and scattering properties for its optical elements. For performance simulation, Monte Carlo based ray tracing technique was used along the optical path starting from the Sun to the final detector plane for a fixed solar zenith angle. This was then followed by simulation of red-tide evolution detection and their radiance estimation, following the in-orbit operational sequence. The simulation results proves the GOCI flight model is capable of detecting both image and radiance originated from the key ocean phenomena including red tide. The model details and computational process are discussed with implications to other earth observation instruments.

It is essential for generating the synthetic image to test and evaluate a guided missile system in the hardware-in-the-loop simulation. In order to make the evaluation results to be more reliable, the extent of fidelity and rendering performance of the synthetic image cannot be left ignored. There are numerous challenges to simulate the LWIR sensor signature of sea surface depending on the incident angle, especially in the maritime environment. In this paper, we investigate the key factors in determining the apparent temperature of sea surface and propose the approximate formula consisting of optical characteristics of sea surface and sky radiance. We find that the greater the incident angle increases, the larger the reflectivity of sea surface, and the greater the water vapor concentration in atmosphere increases, the larger the amount of sky radiance. On the basis of this information, we generate the virtual maritime environment in LWIR region using the SE-WORKBENCH, physically based rendering software. The margin of error is under seven percentage points.

Infrared(IR) guided heat-seeking missiles uses IR emissions from aircraft to detect and track a target. Due to passive characteristic of the IR guidance, early detection of the missile is difficult and it is significant threat to aircraft survivability. Therefore, IR signature prediction of the aircraft is an important aspect of the stealth technology. In this study, we simulated IR signature of the aircraft in real atmospheric conditions. Aircraft surface temperature distribution was calculated by using RadthermIR code. Based on temperature distribution, IR radiance and BRDF(Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function) image were simulated for different weather(seasonal) and background(sky/soil) conditions. The IR contrast tendencies are not aligned with surface temperature or magnitude of target IR radiance. Therefore, it is essential to simulate IR signature with various conditions and background to acquire reliable database.
This paper describes the development, operations, and applications of ROCSAT-l and its Ocean Color Imager (OCI) remote-sensing payload. It is the first satellite program of NSPO. The satellite was successfully launched by Lockheed Martin's Athena on January 26, 1999 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. ROCSAT-l is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) experimental satellite. Its circular orbit has an altitude of 600km and an inclination angle of 35 degrees. The satellite is designed to carry out scientific research missions, including ocean color imaging, experiments on ionospheric plasma and electrodynamics, and experiments using Ka-band (20∼30GHz) communication payloads. The OCI payload is utilized to observe the ocean color in 7 bands (including one redundant band) of Visible and Near-Infrared (434nm∼889nm) range with the resolution of 800m at nadir and the swath of 702km. It employs high performance telecentric optics, push-broom scanning method using Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) and large-scale integrated circuit chips. The water leaving radiance is estimated from the total inputs to the OCI, including the atmospheric scattering. The post-process estimates the water leaving radiance and generates different end products. The OCI has taken images since February 1999 after completing the early orbit checkout. Analyses have been performed to evaluate the performances of the instrument in orbit and to compare them with the pre-launch test results. This paper also briefly describes the ROCSAT-l mission operations. The spacecraft operating modes and ROCSAT Ground Segment operations are delineated, and the overall initial operations of ROCSAT-l are summarized.

With the development of themal observatory device(TOD), thermal camouflage system has been applied not only to the weapon system but also to the combat suit for soldiers. In this paper, the characteristic of thermal radiation of human body depending on the clothing material properties was analyzed through numerical simulations. The bioheat equation with thermoregulatory model was solved to obtain the realistic surface temperature of human body and these results are combined with the emissivity of human skin and clothing in order to calculate the thermal signature from the human body. According to each thermal resistance of clothing, the optimal background radiance which makes contrast radiance intensity(CRI) be lowest is different. Also, the average CRI variation per thermal resistance change is about twice as much as the case of evaporative resistance change.
The observation error of satellite radiation data that assimilated into the Korean Integrated Model (KIM) was diagnosed by applying the Hollingsworth and Lönnberg and Desrozier techniques commonly used. The magnitude and correlation of the observation error, and the degree of contribution for the satellite radiance data were calculated. The observation errors of the similar device, such as Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) and Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A shows different characteristics. The model resolution accounts for only 1% of the observation error, and seasonal variation is not significant factor, either. The observation error used in the KIM is amplified by 3-8 times compared to the diagnosed value or standard deviation of first-guess departures. The new inflation value was calculated based on the correlation between channels and the ratio of background error and observation error. As a result of performing the model sensitivity evaluation by applying the newly inflated observation error of ATMS, the error of temperature and water vapor analysis field were decreased. And temperature and water vapor forecast field have been significantly improved, so the accuracy of precipitation prediction has also been increased by 1.7% on average in Asia especially.

Infrared (IR) stealth technology to protect aircraft from heat-tracking missiles is a very important factor in the development of military aircraft. In this study, the intensities of signal generation were compared by observing the IR signals generated from the plumes of the engine and identifying them for each measurement angle. To simulate a jet engine applied to an actual aircraft, a small turbojet engine was constructed, the infrared signal characteristics for each wavelength were identified according to the measurement angle, and the total infrared radiance was derived by integrating the signal for each wavelength. Through this study, we intend to present basic data for improving the infrared stealth performance of aircraft.
The 2nd Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI-II) is the successor to the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), which employs one near-ultraviolet wavelength (380 nm) and eight visible wavelengths(412, 443, 490, 510, 555, 620, 660, 680 nm) and three near-infrared wavelengths(709, 745, 865 nm) to observe the marine environment in Northeast Asia, including the Korean Peninsula. However, the multispectral radiance image observed at satellite altitude includes both the water-leaving radiance and the atmospheric path radiance. Therefore, the atmospheric correction process to estimate the water-leaving radiance without the path radiance is essential for analyzing the ocean environment. This manuscript describes the GOCI-II standard atmospheric correction algorithm and its initial phase validation. The GOCI-II atmospheric correction method is theoretically based on the previous GOCI atmospheric correction, then partially improved for turbid water with the GOCI-II's two additional bands, i.e., 620 and 709 nm. The match-up showed an acceptable result, with the mean absolute percentage errors are fall within 5% in blue bands. It is supposed that part of the deviation over case-II waters arose from a lack of near-infrared vicarious calibration. We expect the GOCI-II atmospheric correction algorithm to be improved and updated regularly to the GOCI-II data processing system through continuous calibration and validation activities.
In this study, a novel method is proposed for retrieving relative surface temperature from single-channel middle infra-red (MIR, 3-5 ${\mu}m$) remotely sensed data. In order to retrieve absolute temperature from MIR data, it is necessary to accommodate at least atmospheric effects, surface emissivity and reflected solar radiance. Instead of retrieving kinematic temperature of each target, we propose an alternative to retrieve the relative temperature between two targets. The core idea is to minimize atmospheric effects by assuming that the differential at-sensor radiance between two targets experiences the same atmospheric effects. To reduce effective simplify atmospheric parameters, each atmospheric parameter was examined by MODTRAN and MIR emissivity derived from ASTER spectral libraries. Simulation results provided a required accuracy of 2 K for materials with a temperature of 300 K within 0.1 emissivity errors. The algorithm was tested using MODIS band 23 MIR day time images for validation. The accuracy of retrieved relative temperature was $0.485{\pm}1.552$ K. The results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm was able to produce relative temperature with a required accuracy from only single-channel radiance data. However, this method has limitations when applied to materials having very low temperatures using day time MIR images.
