  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the distribution rate of R&D input on R&D output in major manufacturing industrial sector. The distribution rate is estimated on time-series data for the period 1980 to 1996. The data used in this study can be divided into the two categories. 1) R&D output data (Patent, Utility) 2) R&D input data (R&D expenditure, R&D workers) The raw data of R&D expenditure is transformed into R&D stock. And the specific production function is used to represent the interaction between R&D input and output. The production function shows the maximum rate of R&D output that can be achieved by certain given, technologically possible, R&D input combinations. The main findings can be summarized as follows. 1) There was a diminishing return between R&D input and output$(\alpha+\beta<1). 2) R&D output growth was more affected by R&D expenditures than R&D workers. 3) R&D workers were more contributed highly to Patent granted than Utility model.

  • A small-scale loop heat pipe with polypropylene wick was fabricated and tested for its thermal performance. The container and tubing of the system was made of stainless steel and several working fluids were used to see the difference in performance including methanol, ethanol, acetone, R134a, and water. The heating area was 35 mm ${\times}$ 35 mm and there were nine axial grooves in the evaporator to provide a vapor passage. The pore size of the polypropylene wick inside the evaporator was varied from 0.5 m to 25 m. The size of condenser was 40 mm (W) ${\times}$ 50 mm (L) in which ten coolant paths were provided. The inner diameter of liquid and vapor transport lines were 2.0 mm and 4.0 mm, respectively and the length of which were 0.5 m. The PP wick LHP was operated with methanol, acetone, and ethanol normally. R134a was not compatible with PP wick and water was unsuitable within operating limit of $100^{\circ}C$. The minimum thermal load of 10 W (0.8 W/cm2) and maximum thermal load of 80 W (6.5 W/cm2) were achieved using methanol as working fluid with the condenser temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ with horizontal position.

  • The refrigerant R-134a flow distributions are experimentally studied for a round header/ten flat tube test section simulating a brazed aluminum heat exchanger. Three different inlet orientations (parallel, normal, vertical) were investigated. Tests were conducted with downward flow for the mass flux from 70 to $130\;kg/m^2s$ and quality from 0.2 to 0.6. In the test section, tubes were flush-mounted with no protrusion into the header. It is shown that normal and vertical inlet yielded approximately similar flow distribution. At high mass fluxes or high qualities, however, slightly better results were obtained for normal inlet configuration. The flow distribution was worst for the parallel inlet configuration. Possible explanation is provided based on flow visualization results.

  • By using unique experimental techniques and careful construction of the experimental apparatus, the characteristics of the local heat transfer were investigated using the condensing R134a two-phase flow, in horizontal single mini-channels. The circular channels (D$_{h}$=0.493, 0.691, and 1.067 mm) and rectangular channels (Aspect Ratio=1.0, D$_{h}$=0.494, 0.658, and 0.972 mm) were tested and compared. Tests were performed for a mass flux of 100, 200, 400, and 600 kg/$m^2$s, a heat flux of 5 to 20 ㎾/$m^2$, and a saturation temperature of 4$0^{\circ}C$. In this study, effect of heat flux, mass flux, vapor qualities, hydraulic diameter, and channel geometry on flow condensation are investigated and the experimental local condensation heat transfer coefficients are shown. The experimental data of condensation Nusselt number are compared with existing correlations.ons.

  • The Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) is used for cabin air heating of a battery electric vehicle, which is different from conventional vehicles. Since the PTC heater consumes a large quantity of power in a parasitic manner, many valuable studies have been reported in the field of alternative heat pumps. In this study, a model for an R134a heat pump taking into account the thermal environment of the cabin was developed for a MATLAB/SIMULINK(R) platform. Component and cabin models are validated with reference values. Results show that the heat pump is more competitive for parasitic power consumption over all ambient temperature conditions. Additionally, the method of waste heat recovery to overcome disadvantages when temperatures are below zero is applied to efficiently operate the heat pump.

  • Salmonella enterica infects a broad range of host animals, and zoonostic infection threatens both public health and the livestock and meat processing industries. Many antimicrobials have been developed to target Salmonella envelope that performs essential bacterial functions; however, there are very few analytical methods that can be used to validate the efficacy of these antimicrobials. In this study, to develop a potential biosensor for Salmonella envelope stress, we examined the transcription of the S. enterica serovar typhimurium spy gene, the ortholog of which in Escherichia coli encodes Spy (${\underline{s}}pheroplast$ ${\underline{p}}rotein$ ${\underline{y}}$). Spy is a chaperone protein expressed and localized in the periplasm of E. coli during spheroplast formation, or by exposure to protein denaturing conditions. spy expression in S. typhimurium was examined by constructing a spy-gfp transcriptional fusion. S. typhimurium spy transcription was strongly induced during spheroplast formation, and also when exposed to membrane-disrupting agents, including ethanol and the antimicrobial peptide polymyxin B. Moreover, spy induction required the activity of regulator proteins BaeR and CpxR, which are part of the major envelope stress response systems BaeS/BaeR and CpxA/CpxR, respectively. Results suggest that monitoring spy transcription may be useful to determine whether a molecule particularly cause envelope stress in Salmonella.

  • Experimental work was performed on the flow characteristics of R-22 and R-l34a in small diameter tubes. The experimental apparatus was made up of liquid pump, pre-heater, sight-glass, condenser and measurement instruments. The sight-glass for flow pattern observations was located at the outlet of the pre-heater. The experiment was carried out to show the flow characteristics of R-22 and R-l34a. Data were taken with test conditions in the following ranges; the mass flux was ranged from 100 to 1,000 kg/$m^2s$, the saturation temperature was $30^{\circ}C$ and the vapor quality was ranged from 0.1 to 0.9. The main results were summarized as follows; In the flow patterns during evaporation, the annular flow in a 2 mm inner diameter tube occurred at a relatively lower quality and mass velocity, compared to the flow in a 8mm inner diameter tube. The evaporation flow in small diameter tubes has been shown major deviations with the Mandhane, Taitel-Dukler's and Wambs-ganss' flow pattern maps but it was similar to the Dobson's flow pattern map.

  • An autonomously replicating sequence (Kf-ARS1) of Kluyveromyces fragilis was cloned from the genomic library which was constructed using pHN134 as a cloning vector to make a new host-vector system for the production of heterologous protein from K. fragilis as a host. The cloning vector pHN134 was composed of $Km^r, Ap^r$ and multiple cloning site in LacZ . A clone carrying Kf-ARS1 was isolated and the recombinant plasmid was designated as pIKD102. The cloned fragment was 2.3 kb (EcoRI/EcoRI) in length. Subcloning experiment showed that the region for ARS activity was 1.5 kb (SalI/EcoRI) fragment. It was shown that the Kf-ARS1 was active in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Kluyveromyces fragilis.

  • The purpose of research is to understand the characteristics of refrigeration system having a liquid-vapor phase separator after expansion device and precooling heat exchanger. After expansion process of typical refrigerant of freezer, R134a, the cold vapor of the expanded refrigerant mixture is separated in the liquid-vapor separator and introduced in the precooling heat exchanger to enable the liquid refrigerant to be subcooled. The analysis results showed that the increasing rate of refrigeration capacity and COP can be 8.6% and 1.4%, each. The cause of these performance improvements is due to the difference of the slope of saturated vapor and saturated liquid lines in Mollier diagram of refrigerant.

  • An expander of an organic Rankine cycle is an essential component that significantly influences its entire performance and cycle efficiency. The inlet pressure and temperature of the expander used for the organic Rankine cycle are limited by the expander's mechanical properties and the characteristics of the working fluid. The organic Rankine cycle's output, heat absorption, and efficiency are altered by the inlet pressure and temperature of the expander. In this study, a theoretical comparative analysis was conducted on an organic Rankine cycle's performance changes, which are dependent on the inlet condition of the expander. The working fluid is an R134a refrigerant, and the expander is a positive-displacement type.
