  • This study is to evaluated the impact of varying spatial resolutions of DEM (2 m, 10 m, and 30 m), land use (QuickBird, 1/25,000 and Landsat), and soil data (1/25,000 and 1/50,000) on the uncertainty of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) predicted streamflow, sediment, T-N, and T-P transport in a small agricultural watershed ($1.21\;km^2$). SWAT model was adopted and the model was calibrated for a $255.4\;km^2$ watershed using 30 m DEM, Landsat land use, and 1/25,000 soil data. The model was run with the combination of three DEM, land use, and soil map respectively. The SWAT model was calibrated for 2 years (1999-2000) using daily streamflow and monthly water quality (SS, T-N, T-P) records from 1999 to 2000, and verified for another 2 years (2001-2002). The average Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiency was 0.59 for streamflow and the root mean square error were 2.08, 4.30 and 0.70 tons/yr for sediment, T-N and T-P respectively. The hydrological results showed that output uncertainty was biggest by spatial resolution of land use. Streamflow increase the watershed average CN value of QucikBird land use was 0.4 and 1.8 higher than those of 1/25,000 and Landsat land use caused increase of streamflow.

  • If stereo images is used for Digital Elevation Model (DEM) generation, a DEM is generally made by matching left image against right image from stereo images. In stereo matching, tie-points are used as initial match candidate points. The number and distribution of tie-points influence the matching result. DEM made from matching result has errors such as holes, peaks, etc. These errors are usually interpolated by neighbored pixel values. In this paper, we propose the DEM generation method combined with automatic tie-points extraction using existing DEM, image pyramid, and interpolating new DEM using existing DEM for more reliable DEM. For test, we used IKONOS, QuickBird, SPOT5 stereo images and a DTED level 2 data. The test results show that the proposed method automatically makes reliable DEMs. For DEM validation, we compared heights of DEM by proposed method with height of existing DTED level 2 data. In comparison result, RMSE was under than 15 m.

  • Generally, image fusion is defined as generating re-organized image by merging two or more data using special algorithms. In remote sensing, image fusion technique is called as Pan-sharpening algorithm because it aims to improve the spatial resolution of original multispectral image by using panchromatic image of high-spatial resolution. The pan-sharpened image has been an important task due to various applications such as change detection, digital map creation and urban analysis. However, most approaches have tended to distort the spectral information of the original multispectral data or decrease the spatial quality compared with the panchromatic image. In order to solve these problems, a novel pan-sharpening algorithm is proposed by considering the spectral and spatial characteristics of multispectral image. The algorithm is applied to the KOMPSAT-2 and QuickBird satellite image and the results showed that our method can improve the spectral/spatial quality compared with the existing fusion algorithms.

  • The Rational Function Model has been used as a replacement sensor model in most commercial photogrammetric systems due to its capability of maintaining the accuracy of the physical sensor models. Although satellite images with rational polynomial coefficients have been used to determine three-dimensional position, it has limitations in the accuracy for large scale topographic mapping. In this study, high resolution stereo satellite images, QuickBird-2, were used to investigate how much the three-dimensional position accuracy was affected by the No. of ground control points, polynomial order, and distribution of GCPs. As the results, we can confirm that these experiments satisfy the accuracy requirements for horizontal and height position of 1:25,000 map scale.

  • Even after applying an image registration, Very High Resolution (VHR) multi-temporal images acquired from different optical satellite sensors such as IKONOS, QuickBird, and Kompsat-2 show a local misalignment due to dissimilarities in sensor properties and acquisition conditions. As the local misalignment, also referred to as Registration Noise (RN), is likely to have a negative impact on multi-temporal information extraction, detecting and reducing the RN can improve the multi-temporal image processing performance. In this paper, an approach to fine registration between VHR multi-temporal images by considering local distribution of RN is proposed. Since the dominant RN mainly exists along boundaries of objects, we use edge information in high frequency regions to identify it. In order to validate the proposed approach, datasets are built from VHR multi-temporal images acquired by optical satellite sensors. Both qualitative and quantitative assessments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed RN-based fine registration approach compared to the manual registration.

  • The rational polynomial coefficients(RPC) model is a generalized sensor model that is used as an alternative for the physical sensor model for IKONOS-2 and QuickBird. As the number of sensors increases along with greater complexity, and as the need for standard sensor model has become important, the applicability of the RPC model is also increasing. The RPC model can be substituted for all sensor models, such as the projective camera the linear pushbroom sensor and the SAR This paper is aimed at generating a RPC model from the physical sensor model of the KOMPSAT-1(Korean Multi-Purpose Satellite) and aerial photography. The KOMPSAT-1 collects $510{\sim}730nm$ panchromatic images with a ground sample distance (GSD) of 6.6m and a swath width of 17 km by pushbroom scanning. We generated the RPC from a physical sensor model of KOMPSAT-1 and aerial photography. The iterative least square solution based on Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is used to estimate the RPC. In addition, data normalization and regularization are applied to improve the accuracy and minimize noise. And the accuracy of the test was evaluated based on the 2-D image coordinates. From this test, we were able to find that the RPC model is suitable for both KOMPSAT-1 and aerial photography.

  • This study proposed an unsupervised image classification through the dendrogram of agglomerative clustering as a higher stage of image segmentation in image processing. The proposed algorithm is a hierarchical clustering which includes searching a set of MCSNP (Mutual Closest Spectral Neighbor Pairs) based on the data structures of RAG(Regional Adjacency Graph) defined on spectral space and Min-Heap. It also employes a multi-window system in spectral space to define the spectral adjacency. RAG is updated for the change due to merging using RNV (Regional Neighbor Vector). The proposed algorithm provides a dendrogram which is a graphical representation of data. The hierarchical relationship in clustering can be easily interpreted in the dendrogram. In this study, the proposed algorithm has been extensively evaluated using simulated images and applied to very large QuickBird imagery acquired over an area of Korean Peninsula. The results have shown it potentiality for the application of remotely-sensed imagery.

  • High spatial resolution satellite image classification has a limitation when only using the spectral information due to the complex spatial arrangement of features and spectral heterogeneity within each class. Therefore, the extraction of the spatial information is one of the most important steps in high resolution satellite image classification. This study proposes a new spatial feature extraction method, named SSI(Shape-Size Index). SSI uses a simple region-growing based image segmentation and allocates spatial property value in each segment. The extracted feature is integrated with spectral bands to improve overall classification accuracy. The classification is achieved by applying a SVM(Support Vector Machines) classifier. In order to evaluate the proposed feature extraction method, KOMPSAT-2 and QuickBird-2 data are used for experiments. It is demonstrated that proposed SSI algorithm leads to a notable increase in classification accuracy.

  • Refocusing methods are used to compensate optical performance degradation of high resolution satellite camera during on-orbit operation. Due to mechanical vibration during launch and thermal vacuum environment of space where camera is exposed, the alignment of optical system may have error. The focusing error is dominant of misalignment and caused by the de-space error of secondary mirror of catoptric camera, which is most sensitive to vibration and space environment. The high resolution camera of SPOT, Pleiades and KOMPSAT2 have refocusing device to adjust focusing during orbital operation while QuickBird of US does not use on orbit refocusing method. For the Korsch type optical configuration which is preferred for large aperture space remote sensing camera, secondary mirror and folding mirror are available as refocusing element.
