  • We demonstrate that high-resolution (~60 nm) near-field fluorescence images of fluorescent nanospheres can be obtained by utilizing the tip-induced fluorescence quenching process. A time-stamped photon counting (TSPC) technique employed enables us to efficiently measure the degree of fluorescence quenching caused by the dielectric or metallic atomic force microscopy tip. We find that the degree of quenching is not only determined by the tip-material but also by the local morphology of the tip. The fringe patterns around individual nanospheres observed are explained in terms of the interference between the excitation field that is directly induced by the laser source, and the scattered excitation field from the tip.

  • In this study, the direct water quenching technique is applied to validate the applicability of direct water quenching as a cooling method in the hot stamping process of 3.2 mm thick boron steel sheet. Cooling performance of conventional die quenching and direct water quenching is compared. Higher cooling rate is obtained by hot stamping with direct water quenching compared to die quenching. As the flow rate of cooling water increases, the cooling rate increases, and a high cooling rate of 71 ℃/s is achieved under flow rate conditions of 0.8 L/min. Through direct water quenching, the cooling time required for sufficient cooling of the sheet is reduced. Full martensitic microstructure is obtained under flow rate condition of 0.8 L/min. Hardness increases with increasing flow rate. From these results, it is verified that the direct water quenching is applicable to the hot stamping of thick boron steel sheet.

The quenching of fluorescence probe technique. The quenching of fluorescence probe technique. The quenching of fluorescence of 12-(9-anthroyl) stearic acid and N-octadecyl naphthyl-2-amini-6-sulfonic acid by the local anesthetics in liposomal system was used to calculate the distribution. The Stern-Volmer equation was modified and employed for this calculation. The results showed that procaine hydrocloride and benzocaine were mainly distributed on the surface area of the lipid bilayer of the liposoal membrane, while tetracaine hydrochloride penetrated effectively into the hydrocarbon interior and showed even distribution in the lipid bilayer.

  • We utilize times since infall of cluster galaxies obtained from Yonsei Zoom-in Cluster Simulation (YZiCS), the cosmological hydrodynamic N-body simulations, and star formation rates from the SDSS data release 10 to study how quickly late-type galaxies are quenched in the cluster environments. In particular, we confirm that the distributions of both simulated and observed galaxies in phase-space diagrams are comparable and that each location of phase-space can provide the information of times since infall and star formation rates of cluster galaxies. Then, by limiting the location of phase-space of simulated and observed galaxies, we associate their star formation rates at z ~ 0.08 with times since infall using an abundance matching technique that employs the 10 quantiles of each probability distribution. Using a flexible quenching model covering different quenching scenarios, we find the star formation history of satellite galaxies that best reproduces the obtained relationship between time since infall and star formation rate at z ~ 0.08. Based on the derived star formation history, we constrain the quenching timescale (2 - 7 Gyr) with a clear stellar mass trend and confirm that the refined model is consistent with the "delayed-then-rapid" quenching scenario: the constant delayed phase as ~ 2.3 Gyr and the quenching efficiencies (i.e., e-folding timescale) outside and inside clusters as ~ 2 - 4 Gyr (${\propto}M_*^{-1}$) and 0.5 - 1.5 Gyr (${\propto}M_*^{-2}$), Finally, we suggest: (i) ram-pressure is the main driver of quenching of satellite galaxies for the local Universe, (ii) the quenching trend on stellar mass at z > 0.5 indicates other quenching mechanisms as the main driver.

  • In order to realize a stably propagating flame in a narrow channel, flame instabilities resulting from flame-wall interaction should be avoided. In particular flame quenching is a significant issue in micro combustion devices; quenching is caused either by excessive heat loss or by active radical adsorptions at the wall. In this paper, the relative significance of thermal and chemical effects on flame quenching is examined by means of quenching distance measurement. Emphasis is placed on the effects of surface defect density on flame quenching. To investigate chemical quenching phenomenon, thermally grown silicon oxide plates with well-defined defect distribution were prepared. ion implantation technique was used to control defect density, i.e. the number of oxygen vacancies. It has been found that when the surface temperature is under $300^{\circ}C$, the quenching distance is decreased on account of reduced heat loss; as the surface temperature is increased over $300^{\circ}C$, however, quenching distance is increased despite reduced heat loss effect. Such abberant behavior is caused by heterogeneous surface reactions between active radicals and surface defects. The higher defect density, the larger quenching distance. This result means that chemical quenching is governed by radical adsorption that can be parameterized by oxygen vacancy density on the surface.

  • Mechanical alloying (MA) is a powder metallurgy processing technique involving cold welding, fracturing, and rewelding of powder particles in a high-energy ball mill. This has now become an established commercial technique in producing oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) nickel- and iron-based materials. The technique of MA is also capable of synthesizing non-equilibrium phases such as supersaturated solid solutions, metastable crystalline and quasicrystalline intermetallic phases, nanostructures, and amorphous alloys. In this respect, the capabilities of MA are similar to those of another important non-equilibrium processing technique, viz, rapid quenching of metallic melts. however, the science of MA is being investigated only during the past ten years or so. The technique of mechanochemistry, on the other hand, has had a long history and the materials produced this way have found a number of technological applications, e.g., in areas such as hydrogen storage materials, heaters, gas absorber, fertilizers. catalysts, cosmetics, and waste management. The present talk will concentrate on the basic mechanisms of formation of non-equilibrium phases by the technique of MA and these aspects will be compared with those of rapid quenching of metallic melts. Additionally, the variety of technological applications of mechanically alloyed products will be highlighted.

  • This study deals with the characteristic of refrigerant for heat-treatment deformation control of SCM415 steel. The control of heat-treatment deformation must need the progress of production parts for an industry machine. Most of the deformation is occurred on unequal cooling. The unequal cooling is occurred by a property of quenching refrigeration. When a heated metal is deposited in the refrigeration, the cooling speed is so slow in early period of cooling because of occurring a steam-curtain. After more cooling, the steam-curtain is destroyed. In this progress, the cooling speed is very fast. The object of this study is to control the deformation of heat-treatment for the part of the industry machine by improving the conditions of quenching. The cooling curves and cooling rates of water, oil and polymer solution are obtained and illustrated. From the characteristics of the quenching refrigerant, the effects of heat-treatments on the thermal deformation and fatigue strength are also investigated.

  • The present study was motivated by increasing demands on quantitative measurements of the heat flux through the water cooling and quenching process of hot steel. The local heat flux measurements are employed by a novel experimental technique that has a function of high-temperature heat flux gauge in which test block assemblies are directly used to measure the heat flux variation during water cooling and quenching of hot steel. The heat flux can be directly achieved by Fourier's law and is also compared with numerical estimation which is solved by inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP). The high-temperature heat flux gauge developed in this study can be applicable to measure cooling rate and history during the actual cooling applications of steelmaking process. In addition, the measurement uncertainty of heat flux is calculated by a quantitative uncertainty analysis which is based on the ANSI/ASME PTC 19.1-2005 standard.

  • Nanocrystalline porous silicon surfaces have been used to detect nitroaromatic compounds in vapor phase. The mode of photoluminescence is emphasized as a sensing attitude or detection technique. Quenching of photoluminescence from nanocrystalline porous surfaces as a transduction mode is measured upon the exposure of nitroaromatic compounds. Reversible detection mode for nitroaromatics is, too, observed. To verify the detection afore-mentioned, photoluminescent freshly prepared porous silicons are functionalized with different groups. The mechanism of quenching of photoluminescence is attributed to the electron transfer behaviors of quantum-sized nano-crystallites in the porous silicon matrix to the analytes(nitroaromatics). An attempt has been done to prove that the surface-derivatized photoluminescent porous silicone surfaces can act as versatile substrates for sensing behaviors due to having a large surface area and highly sensitive transduction mode.

  • A CMOS photo detection bias quenching circuit is developed to be used with single photon avalanche photodiodes (SPADs) operating in Geiger mode for the detection of weak optical signals. The proposed bias quenching circuits for the performance improvement reduce the circuit size as well as improve the performance of the quenching operation. They are fabricated in a $0.18-{\mu}m$ standard CMOS technology to verify the effectiveness of this technique with the chip area of only $300{\mu}m^2$, which is about 60 % of the previous reported circuit. Two types of proposed circuits with resistive and capacitive load demonstrated improved performance of reduced quenching time. With a commercial APD by HAMAMATSU, the dead time can be adjusted as small as 50 ns.
