Characteristic of Quenching Refrigerant for Heat Treatment Deformation Control of SM45C Steel

  • This study deals with the characteristic of quenching refrigerant for heat treatment deformation control of SM45C steel. Heat-treatment deformation must be controlled for the progress of production parts for landing gear. Most of deformation is occurred on inconsistent cooling. The inconsistent cooling is caused by a property of quenching refrigerant. When a heated metal is deposited in the quenching refrigerant, the cooling speed is so slow in early period of cooling because of a steam-curtain. After additional cooling, the steam-curtain is destroyed. In this progress, the cooling speed is very fast. The object of this study is to control the deformation of heat-treatment for landing gear by improving the conditions of quenching. The cooling curves and cooling rates of water, oil and polymer solution are obtained and illustrated. From the characteristics of the quenching refrigerant, the effects of heat-treatments on thermal deformation and fatigue strength are also investigated.

  • To improve and control the mechanical properties of low alloy steel, the influence of quenching and tempering process conditions was investigated. In the case of quenching heat treatment, a comparison was made between the conventional method of heating to the austenite region followed by single quenching and a method involving double quenching, followed by high-temperature tempering. It was observed that specimens subjected to double quenching exhibited significantly finer tempered microstructures compared to those subjected to conventional quenching, resulting in noticeably higher hardness. Additionally, a study was conducted to investigate the variation in hardness with changes in tempering temperature and time after the same conventional quenching treatment. As expected, an increase in tempering temperature or time led to a decrease in hardness, and the correlation between hardness and the Hollomon-Jeffe Parameter was confirmed. It was also observed that during high-temperature tempering, the size of carbides significantly increased.

  • The effects of added elements, such as Co or Nb, on wear properties of high speed steel by powder metallurgy(PM-HSS) had been evaluated in previous paper. The wear properties of materials, in fact, have been a]so influenced by heat-treating conditions. In this paper, the effects of heat-treating conditions on wear properties of PM-HSS have been evaluated. The wear tests have been performed as same conditions as previous paper using PM-HSS(5%Co-1%Nb) heat-treated under different quenching and tempering temperature. The result of this paper shows that wear resistance of PM-HSS is improved with relatively high quenching temperature. However tempering temperature is not sensitve to the wear resistance in range of high quenching temperature. It may be deduced by the fact that the shear strength of matrix by strengthening mechanisms of quenching aging in addition to dispersion-hardening is improved.

  • The electrical breakdown characteristics of liquid nitrogen(LN$\sub$2/) were studied under simulated quenching conditions for application of HTS apparatus. The experimental results for various quenching condition revealed that the breakdown voltage of LN$\sub$2/ with bubble flow velocity and gap spacing. In the case, breakdown voltage decreases gradually with the bubble velocity. When it is bubble velocity from 0 to 1 $\ell$ /min, breakdown voltage rapidly decreases but decreases from 2 $\ell$/min to 10 $\ell$/min slowly. The breakdown voltage for vertical electrode arrangement is higher than that for horizontal electrode arrangement. Also, it did a electric field and potential distribution interpreting at the liquid nitrogen when the bubble existed. The plots of equipotential lines for three cases are also shown.

Excimer Fluorescence Quenching of Poly (styrene-co-acrylic acid)-Eu Complex by Simple Hydrocarbons in Tetrahydrofuran Solutions

  • Quenching of excimer fluorescence from polystyrene-acrylic acid copolymers containing $Eu^{3+}$ has been studied in tetrahydrofuran solution using simple aromatic hydrocarbons as quenchers under steady-state conditions. Aromatic hydrocarbons quenched collisionally the excimer fluorescence and their rate constants of quenching were determined. The magnitude of quenching constant is interpreted in terms of the cube root of the molar volume of quencher. Cycloalkanes were not effective in quenching the excimer fluorescence possibly due to different solubility characteristics from aromatic hydrocarbons.

  • Direct water quenching technique can be used in hot stamping process to obtain higher cooling rate compared to that of the normal die cooling method. In the direct water quenching process, setting proper water flow rate in consideration of material thickness and the size of the area directly cooled in the component is important to ensure uniform microstructure and mechanical properties. In this study, to derive proper water flow rate conditions that can achieve uniform microstructure and mechanical properties, microstructure and hardness distribution in various water flow rate conditions are measured for 3.2 mm thick boron steel sheet. Hardness distribution is uniform under the flow condition of 1.5 L/min or higher. However, due to the lower cooling rate in that area, the lower flow conditions result in a drastic decrease in hardness in some areas in the hot-stamped part, resulting in low martensite fraction. From these results, it is found that the selection of proper water flow rate is an important factor in hot stamping with direct water quenching process to ensure uniform mechanical properties.

  • Incomplete combustion due to quenching in a narrow confinement has been a major problem for realization of a reliable micro combustion device. In most micro combustors, effects of flows are absent in the quenching because the flow is laminar and no severe stretch is present. In such circumstance, quenching is caused either by heat loss or by removal of active radicals to the wall surface of the confinement. An experimental investigation was carried out to investigate the relative significance of these two causes of quenching of a premixed flame. A premixed jet burner with a rectangular cross section at the exit was built. At the burner exit, the flame stands between two walls with adjustable distance. The gap between the two walls at which quenching occurs was measured at different wall surface conditions. The results were analyzed to estimate the relative significance of heat loss to the wall and the removal of radicals at the surface. The measurements indicated that the quenching distance was independent of the wall surface characteristics such as oxygen vacancy, grain boundary, or impurities at low temperature. At high temperature, however, the surface characteristics strongly affect the quenching distance, implying that radical removal at the wall plays a significant role in the quenching process.

In addition, it is generally known that the wear properties of materials have been influenced by heat-treating conditions as well. Therefore, a study has been done to clarify the effects of heat-treating conditions on wear properties of PM-HSS. The wear tests have been performed under the same conditions as the previous paper using heat-treated PM-HSS(5%Co-1%Nb) with different quenching and tempering temperatures. The result of this paper shows that wear resistance of PM-HSS is improved with relatively high quenching temperature. However, tempering temperature is not sensitive to the wear resistance in the range of high quenching temperature. It may be deduced by the fact that the shear strength of matrix by strengthening mechanisms due to not only the quenching aging but also dispersion-hardening is improved.

보론강 판재 핫스탬핑시 직수분사냉각 공정의 적용성 (The Application of Direct Water Quenching Process in Hot Stamping of Boron Steels)

  • In this study, the direct water quenching technique is applied to validate the applicability of direct water quenching as a cooling method in the hot stamping process of 3.2 mm thick boron steel sheet. Cooling performance of conventional die quenching and direct water quenching is compared. Higher cooling rate is obtained by hot stamping with direct water quenching compared to die quenching. As the flow rate of cooling water increases, the cooling rate increases, and a high cooling rate of 71 ℃/s is achieved under flow rate conditions of 0.8 L/min. Through direct water quenching, the cooling time required for sufficient cooling of the sheet is reduced. Full martensitic microstructure is obtained under flow rate condition of 0.8 L/min. Hardness increases with increasing flow rate. From these results, it is verified that the direct water quenching is applicable to the hot stamping of thick boron steel sheet.
