  • This paper presets experimental and analytical studies of ultimate strength of [$[30_2/-30_2/90]_S$ carbon/epoxy laminates with free-edge delamination under uniaxial tension. We performed tensile teat far laminates with Telflon inserted on interfaces to simulate initial free-edge delamination, The experiment reveals that extensional stiffness of the laminate decreases by the initiation of the delamination, and that strength of the laminate without delamination is smaller than that of the laminates with delamination. Generalized quasi-three delamination finite element analysis, which employs energy release rate and maximum stress criteria, predicts the ultimate strength of the laminates with sufficient accuracy.

  • A strut-and-tie model is introduced in this paper to predict the ultimate shear strength of non-seismically detailed columns. The validity and applicability of the proposed strut-and-tie model are evaluated by comparison with available experimental data. The model was developed based on visible crack patterns observed on the test specimens. The concrete contribution is integrated into the strut-and-tie model through a concept of equivalent transverse reinforcement. To further validate the model a full-scale non-seismically detailed reinforced concrete column was tested to investigate its seismic behavior. The specimen was tested under the combination of a constant axial load, $0.30f_c{^{\prime}}A_g$ and quasi-static cyclic loadings simulating earthquake actions. Quasi-static cyclic loadings simulating earthquake actions were applied to the specimen until it could not sustain the applied axial load. The analytical results reveal that the strut-and-tie method is capable of modeling to a satisfactory accuracy the ultimate shear strength of non-seismically detailed columns subjected to reserved cyclic loadings.

  • A weak-form formulation of finite annular prism methods (FAPM) based on Reissner's mixed variational theorem (RMVT), is developed for the quasi three-dimensional (3D) static analysis of two-directional functionally graded (FG) circular plates with various boundary conditions and under mechanical loads. The material properties of the circular plate are assumed to obey either a two-directional power-law distribution of the volume fractions of the constituents through the radial-thickness surface or an exponential function distribution varying doubly exponentially through it. These FAPM solutions of the loaded FG circular plates with both simply-supported and clamped edges are in excellent agreement with the solutions obtained using the 3D analytical approach and two-dimensional advanced plate theories available in the literature.

  • The paper presents a generalization of existing analytical approaches to determine the across-wind aerodynamic damping of tall structures through the quasi-steady theory. The theory takes into account the nature of non-uniform wind, structural mode shapes and the variation of structural parameters. Numerical applications on a prototype high-rise building and a real sculptural tower point out that the common approach may be over simplified, giving rise to inappropriate predictions of the aerodynamic damping. The role of the structural mode shapes, usually being neglected for uniform structures, is then highlighted.

  • This paper is concerned with the buckling behavior of 2D and quasi-3D problem of functionally graded nanobeam founded on high order shear deformation beams theory and made by two different types of porous distribution materials in Nano- and micro-scales. The used Quasi-3D formulation takes into account the transverse shear effect and uses only three variables. Both formulations do not include the correction factor that is required in the first shear deformation theory proposed by Timoshenko. Governing equations are derived using the principle of virtual work. Analytical resolutions for buckling of FG nanobeam are introduced under tow different boundary conditions, and the results obtained are compared to those proposed in literatures.

  • This paper addresses an analytical study on the gas-solid two phase flows in a nozzle. The primary purpose is to get recognition into the gas-solid suspension flows and to investigate the particle motion and its influence on the gas flow field. The present study is the primal step to comprehend the gas-solid suspension flow in the convergent-divergent nozzle. This paper try to made a development of an analytical model to study the back pressure ratio, particles loading and the particle diameter effect on gas-solid suspension flow. Mathematical model of gas-solid two phase flow was developed based on the single phase flow models to solve the quasi-one-dimensional mass, momentum equations to calculate the steady pressure field. The influence of particles loading and particle diameter is analyzed. The results obtained show that the suspension flow of smaller diameter particles has almost same trend as that of single phase flow using ideal gas as working fluid. And the presence of particles will weaken the strength of the shock wave; the bigger particle will have larger slip velocity with gas flow. The thrust coefficient is found to be higher for larger particles/gas loading or back pressure ratio, but it also depends on the ambient pressure.

  • The wind-induced transient response of internal pressure following the creation of a sudden dominant opening during the occurrence of high external pressure, in low-rise residential and industrial buildings was numerically investigated. The values of the ill-defined parameters namely the flow contraction coefficient, loss coefficient and the effective slug length were calibrated by matching the analytical response with the computational fluid dynamics predictions. The effect of a sudden i.e., "instantaneously created" windward opening in the Texas Technical University (TTU) test building envelope was studied for two different envelope flexibility-leakage combinations namely: (1) a quasi-statically flexible and non-porous envelope and (2) a quasi-statically flexible and porous envelope. The responses forced by creating the openings at different time leads/lags with respect to the occurrence of the peak external pressure showed that for cases where the openings are created in close temporal proximity to the peak pressure, the transient overshoot values of internal pressure could be higher than the peak values of internal pressure in the pre-sequent or subsequent resonant response. In addition, the influence of time taken for opening creation on the level of overshoot was also investigated for the TTU building for the two different envelope characteristics. Non-dimensional overshoot factors are presented for a variety of cavity volume-opening area combinations for (1) buildings with rigid/quasi-statically flexible non-porous envelope, and (2) buildings with rigid/quasi-statically flexible and porous envelope (representing most low rise residential and industrial buildings). While the factors appear slightly on the high side due to conservative assumptions made in the analysis, a careful consideration regarding the implication of the timing and magnitude of such overshoots during strong gusts, in relation to the steady state internal pressure response in cyclonic regions, is warranted.

  • In this paper, a new refined quasi-three-dimensional (3D) shear deformation theory for the bending analysis of functionally graded plate is presented. The number of unknown functions involved in this theory is only four against five or more in the case of the other shear and normal deformation theories. Due to its quasi-3D nature, the stretching effect is taken into account in the formulation of governing equations. In addition, the effect of different micromechanical models on the bending response of these plates is studied. Various micromechanical models are used to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of the FG plates whose properties vary continuously across the thickness according to a simple power law. The present theory accounts for both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by a parabolic variation of displacements across the thickness, and the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factors. The problem is solved for a plate simply supported on its edges and the Navier solution is used. The results of the present method are compared with others from the literature where a good agreement has been found. A detailed parametric study is presented to show the effect of different micromechanical models on the flexural response of a simply supported FG plates.

  • This article investigates the static behaviour of functionally graded (FG) plates sometimes declared as advanced composite plates by using a simple and accurate quasi-3D and 2D hyperbolic higher-order shear deformation theories. The properties of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness direction according to exponential law distribution (E-FGM). The kinematics of the present theories is modeled with an undetermined integral component and satisfies the free transverse shear stress conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate; therefore, it does not require the shear correction factor. The fundamental governing differential equations and boundary conditions of exponentially graded plates are derived by employing the static version of principle of virtual work. Analytical solutions for bending of EG plates subjected to sinusoidal distributed load are obtained for simply supported boundary conditions using Navier'is solution procedure developed in the double Fourier trigonometric series. The results for the displacements and stresses of geometrically different EG plates are presented and compared with 3D exact solution and with other quasi-3D and 2D higher-order shear deformation theories to verify the accuracy of the present theory.
