  • A split hopkinson bar could be used for obtaining the high strain rate material properties of sheet metals for an autobody. In high speed tensile tests of sheet matals, a new design of a tension split Hopkinson bar apparatus is needed. The design of grips and an anvil length are numerically analyzed with ABAQUS/Explicit for the new apparatus of split Hopkinson bars. From the experiments with the new apparatus, the material properties of SPCEN in the high strain rate state have been acquired and compared with quasi-static experimental results. The material properties of SPCEN as well as other sheet metals in an autobody are indispensible for the analysis of crashworthness. Nevertheless the experiment of sheet metal in the high strain rate state has not been done or reported.

  • The purposes of the study were 1) to extend the cognitive categorization theory in an attempt to explain the of garment category, fashionability, and wearer's body types on impression formation, and 2) to find out structures of wearer's impressional dimension and wearer's professional image. The research included a quasi-experiment and survey. The experimental design was a $2^{3}$full factorial design of 3 independent variables. The experimental materials developed for the study were a set of stimuli and a response scale. The stimuli consisted of 8 drawings made by 3 independent variables (garment category, fashion level, wearer's body type). Result were as follows: 1) Garment category, fashionability and wearer's body type had significant effects on impression of the 5 factors-evaluation, potency, appearance, sociability and good-bad, with exception of wearer's body type which was nonsignificant to the potency factor. 2) Garment category was most effective on the evaluation and the potency. However wearer's body type was most effect on the appearance factor and fashionability variable was most effective on the good-bad factor. It was conclued that the results supported the cognitive categorization theory on impression formation and a cognitive categorization hypothesis of clothes.

  • Background: This study aimed to examine the repeatability of hamstring strength during maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) and to examine the sex difference. Design: Quasi-experiment design. Methods: The study recruited 23 healthy young individuals as participants. Hamstring flexibility was measured before and after MVCs by active knee extension test. Five trials of MVCs were performed, and hip extension forces were measured using a strain gauge during MVCs. Repeatability was confirmed by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and coefficient of variation, and the difference between male and female participants was confirmed by independent samples t-test. Results: The forces measured during MVCs were significantly different between men and women over five trials. We observed the minimum and maximum force production at the first and fifth trial of MVCs in both men and women. Excellent to moderate reliability of the hamstring strength during MVCs was found in men (ICC range, 0.70-0.98) and women (ICC range, 0.66-0.90). There was no significant difference in hamstring flexibility between men and women. Conclusion: In clinical settings, we recommend excluding the first trial of MVCs in both men and women. Additionally, performing at least three trials of MVCs would be useful to improve the reliability of the baseline measures in women.

  • A low density parity check (LDPC) decoder provides a most powerful error control capability for mobile communication devices and storage systems, due to its performance being close to Shannon's limit. In this paper, we introduce an efficient overlapped LDPC decoding algorithm using a upper dual-diagonal parity check matrix structure. By means of this algorithm, the LDPC decoder can concurrently execute parts of the check node update and variable node update in the sum-product algorithm. In this way, we can reduce the number of clock cycles per iteration as well as reduce the total latency. The proposed decoding structure offers a very simple control and is very flexible in terms of the variable bit length and variable code rate. The experiment results show that the proposed decoder can complete the decoding of codewords within 70% of the number of clock cycles required for a conventional non-overlapped decoder. The proposed design also reduces the power consumption by 33% when compared to the non-overlapped design.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the performance of S University's Premier Global Construction Engineer Training Program. The net impact of the program is evaluated through a quasi-experiment design approach. The competency level of an individual participant is compared with that of a non-participating expert with similar professional background. The results show that the training program contributed to a significant improvement in the professional competencies of the participating students. The competency level was regressed on the subjects of curriculum. The achievements are attributable to a group of subjects focused on the skills for project development such as PPP, feasibility study, and project financing. Another group of subjects found to have significantly contributed to the improved competencies can be categorized as subjects focused on nurturing global perspectives. The paper shows it is possible to quantify the contribution of the program and the results provide a set of information that can be useful in designing and operating similar programs.
