  • QFT(Quantitative Feedback Theory) is a very practical design technique that emphasizes the use of feedback for achieving the desired system performance tolerances in despite of plant uncertainty and disturbance. The gain-phase loop shaping procedure of QFT is employed to design controller, until the bounds at desired frequencies are satisfied. This paper presents a transfer function synthesis using TLS(Total Least Squares) and offers a loop shaping method with the suggested technique. An example illustrates a feasibility of the presented algorithm.

  • This work presents a study on development of a practical and quantitative technique for assessment of the healthy state of a structure by piezoelectric impedance-based technique associated with longitudinal wave propagation measuring method. A truss structure embedded with piezoelectric patches is investigated for a fundamental study on estimation of the looseness of bolts in the joint. In order to evaluate the minute mechanical impedance change due to loosening bolt, a harmonic longitudinal elastic wave is applied to the structure by a pair of PZT patches and their electric impedance is measured simultaneously. According to the experimental results, the change of the electric impedance of P...

  • Digital Subtraction Angiography(DSA) technique has been widely used to detect vascular diseases and hemodynamic parameters noninvasively. However, there are few quantitative studies on the factors in fluencing the resultant DSA image quality. In this paper, several important factors are suggested to improved the DSA image quality based on mathematical analysis. Experimental DSA images for different filters are shown and also discussed the difference between original and processed image quality.

  • It has long been recognized that cancer is a genetic disease. To find this measures of genetic instability, stain cells with chromosome specific probes using chromosome in-situ hybridization technique is adopted. Even though in-situ hybridization technique is powerful, truncation of nuclei often results in under-representation of chromosome copies in slides due to the sectioning of tissue blocks. Because of this problem we suggest three different methods to analyze the cervical cancer data set. We observe that genetic instability is an increasing function of histology and our suggested model is the best in detecting genetic instability of tumorigenesis processes.

  • The hydrolysis mechanisms as well as the hydrolysis measurement technique and its practical applications in material manufacturing fields are revised. This chapter, Part 1, elaborates the theoretical aspects of the hydrolysis mechanism. Acid-catalyzed and base-catalyzed hydrolysis mechanisms are reviewed. The quantitative analysis method based on the SIM technique using py-GC-MS is reviewed. Examples of hydrolysis of alkoxysilane in elastomer composites currently used in the industry and hydrolysis of amine in plastic composites are shown. Moreover, Part 2 discusses the mechanical property changes in elastomer and plastic composites after hydrolysis.

  • This study presents an effective stiffness-based optimal technique to control quantitatively lateral drift for shear wall structures subject to lateral loads. To this end the displacement sensitivity depending on behavior characteristics of shear wall structures is established. Also, the approximation concept that can preserve the generality of the mathematical programming and can efficiently solve large scale problems is introduced. Resizing sections in the stiffness-based optimal design are assumed to be uniformly varying in size and the technique of member grouping is considered for the improvement of construction efficiency Two types of 11-story shear wall structures are presented to illustrate the features of the quantitative lateral drift control technique proposed in this study.

  • We propose a borehole test technique to estimate permeability of rocks in borehole. The borehole tests are hydraulic injection tests such as leak-off test and hydraulic fracturing tests, which are originally conducted for stress or casing integrity assessment and not for permeability measurement. We use one-dimensional radial diffusion equation to interpret fluid injection test results in terms of permeability. We apply this technique to a leak-off test conducted at a depth of 700 m in a wellbore, where rock formation is mudstone. The estimated permeability is at an order of $10^{-16}m^2$, which is somewhat high but within the range reported for mudstones previously. Quantitative rick assessment suggests that an accurate measurement of open hole section length is important to improve reliability of results. More data may be needed to ensure the reliability of this technique. If validated, however, this technique can provide cost-effective estimation of in situ permeability without conducting independent permeability tests in borehole.

  • Numerical simulation is made of the three-dimensional wave breaking motion about a part of a floating offshore structure containing a circular cylinder mounted vertically onto a lower hull in regular periodic gravity wave generated by a numerical wave maker. TUMMAC-VIII finite-difference method is newly developed for such a problem. By use of density-function technique the three-dimensional wave breaking motion is approximately implenented in the framework of rectangular grid system. A porosity technique is devised for the implementation of the no-slip bydy boundary conditions. The generation of breaking waves by the interaction of incident waves with the structure is well simulated and interesting features of breaking waves are revealed with containing degree of quantitative and qualitative accuracy.

  • The purpose of this paper is to extract DEMs from Spot-3 strips using orbit modeling technique. Spot-3 stereo strip images along 420km in distance were used for experiments. The orbit modeling technique has been suggested to establish accurate geometric models for a whole strip taken on the same orbit using only a small number of GCPs on the top area of the strip. This method enables extraction of orientation parameters of the scene along the strip that is needed to generate DEMs. Consequently, we were able to extract DEMs over the areas without accurate GCPs obtained by GPS surveying per each scene. Assessment of accuracy was carried out using USGS DTED. DEMs generated from the orbit modelling technique suggested showed satisfactory performance when quantitative analysis of accuracy assessment was carried out.
