  • Studying language by the quantitative linguistic method is not a recent development. Lately however, the interest in the quantitative linguistics has increased according to the demand on communication between human and human or between human and machine. We are required to transfer the system of the natural language onto machine. This requires the study of quantitative linguistics because we are unable to seize the characters of the tiny linguistic units and their structure in an intuitive way. In fact, the quantitative linguistics treats the internal structure of the language by the relation between the linguitic units and their quantitative characters. It is natural then that there is this growing interest in quantitative linguistics. In addition, Korean linguists take interest in the quantitative linguistics, although quantitative linguistics in Korea is not advanced by the level of the statistical analysis. Therefore, this present study shows how statistics can be applied in the field of linguistics through the two texts written in French: Lovers of the Subway and Our life's A. B. C.

  • Nowadays, from the study of quantitative linguistics, the application of quantitative method is located in a variety of fields as a necessary method. According to this phenomenon, the knowledge of statistical method is requisite for linguists. However, unfortunately, there still remain difficulties for them to acquire the statistical knowledge. So, it is needed for linguists to be helped by statisticians and their active roles. Accordingly, this study is going to emphasizing that statisticians should have more interests in the field of quantitative linguistics. Moreover, it will prove that by using statistical methods, analysis on the linguistic research becomes more objective and scientific.

  • The goal of quantitative linguistics is to show the quantitative behavior of linguistic units. There are several studies which examine the frequency of Korean phonemes, which are important in comprehending the internal function of the linguistic units. However, the frequency information, from the pure phonological level without any consideration of rhythmic group, cannot adequately represent linguistic phenomena. Therefore, to provide the effective information, the phonological transcription must be carried out on the level of rhythmic group. In this paper, we made the transcription to analyze Korean phonology. We were not satisfied with merely investigating the frequencies of the phonemes, but also examined whether the distribution of Korean phonemes show the binomial distribution within linguistic constraints.

  • This paper aims at proposing issues of breath and memory in speech based on the quantitative analysis of breath groups and pause units in Korean. As a human being, we have two kinds of limitations on continuing speech; breath and memory. The prosodic structure and temporal structure of spontaneous speech data from six speakers were closely examined. One of the main findings of the present study is that the prosodic structure and temporal structure of Korean appears to reflect the breath and memory problems in speech.

  • From the view of natural language process, quantitative linguistic analysis is a linguistic study relying on statistical methods, and is a mathematical linguistics in an attempt to discover various linguistic characters by interpreting linguistic facts quantitatively through statistical methods. In this study, I would like to introduce a quantitative linguistic analysis method utilizing a computer and statistical methods on literary works. I also try to introduce a use of SynKDP, a synthesized Korean data process, and show the relations between distribution of linguistic unit elements which are used by the hero in a novel #Sassinamjunggi# and theme analysis on literary works.

  • This study investigated how air traffic controllers (ATCs) perceive the visual information on radar screen and examined quantitative and qualitative differences as a function of expertise. Little research has shown that how much information is processed by ATC visually and perceptually, how ATCs represent the information, and what difference exists between experts and novices. Participants were asked to draw representing visual information on the blank sector map after a 5-second exposure. Data were analyzed by a superimposing method to identify correctly represented information. Results showed that the expert group had much larger size of chunking and their pattern was wider and more accurate than the novice group. The practical application and methodological implications are also discussed for further research.

  • In this study, we investigate ways that focus is realized in English utterances produced by native speakers of English and Korean learners. As compared to the previous studies which deal mainly with functional aspects of focus as a part of intonational structure, we attempt to provide more quantitative information on F0 and discover the extent to which Korean learners distinguish focus types in their English utterance production. On the test sentences designed to be disambiguated by correct focus realization, it is found that, even advanced-level Korean learners, unlike native speakers, hardly employ F0 to clarify the specific meaning of English utterances.

  • This paper examines how L2 speech production varies according to learner's L2 proficiency level. L2 speech production variations are analyzed by quantitative measures at word and phone levels using Korean learners' English corpus. Word-level variations are analyzed using correctness to explain how speech realizations are different from the canonical forms, while accuracy is used for analysis at phone level to reflect phone insertions and deletions together with substitutions. The results show that speech production of learners with different L2 proficiency levels are considerably different in terms of performance and individual realizations at word and phone levels. These results confirm that speech production of non-native speakers varies according to their L2 proficiency levels, even though they share the same L1 background. Furthermore, they will contribute to improve non-native speech recognition performance of ASR-based English language educational system for Korean learners of English.
