Interpretation of Ammonia Absorption Behavior in Water Turbulent Flow (물 난류에서의 암모니아 흡수 거동 해석)

  • The article is devoted to the interpretation of ammonia, one of the fine dust precursors, absorption behavior in water turbulent flow. The water flow was considered as a turbulent flow with Reynolds number more than 104, because ammonia gas penetration depth was deeper at turbulent flow compared to laminar flow. For the interpretation, the dimensionless mass transfer governing-equation and the constant physical-properties at room temperature were used. The diffusivity of ammonia in water and the kinematic viscosity of water were 2×109m2/s and 1×106m2/s, respectively. The concentration distribution of ammonia in water was estimated with respect to the position from the point where the water started to be exposed to ammonia. The quantitative distribution as a function of the mixing length was also acquired. The quantitative interpretation may provide the insight how much the turbulent flow was more efficient to remove ammonia rather than the laminar flow.

  • A new system for automatic scoring of 'organization' of the EEG dominant rhythm was constructed and applied to 18 normal subjects and 15 patients. Organization parameters which best represented the 'organization' as judged by 5 neurologists' visual inspection were calculated and the automatic organization scoring was obtained by a linear regression of those organization parameters. Furthermore, values of the regression coefficients were used to study the characteristics of EEG interpretation by each neurologist, and this scoring technique can also be applied to the training of EEG interpretation.

  • Two-level factorial designs are popular in industry due to their simplicity, efficiency, graphical interpretation, and flexibility in sequential experimentation. However, experimenters are often frustrated when they have factors with more than two levels. There have been some works on design of experiments with two- and four-level factors, which mostly deal with qualitative four-level factors. This paper discusses differences between qualitative and quantitative four-level factors. Optimal designs are provided for some designs with four-level quantitative and two-level factors.

  • The main focus of this paper is to apply contemporary aesthetics and psychological study with interior design analysis. Up to now, the methodology of interior design analysis has been developed toward a more qualitative way. By the virtue of the perception , congnition , and information theory, which oriented toward a quantitative approach, it became possible to investigate interior space analysis to a more objective and scientific ways. The purpose of this study is to investigate Modern and Post-Modern interior - architectural style with quantitative analytical method. The subjective interior critique studied by intuitive research will be transferred to scientific way by using quantitative formula . Savoye Villa and Guardiola House were selected as study model, because each architectural works ware regarded as masterpieces of Modern and Post-Modern style. These two oppositional style model will be distinguished with mathematical quantity by calculating Iave , Hmax, and Redundancy formula.

Methodological Implications of Hermeneutics for Qualitative Research on Children (질적 아동연구를 위한 해석학의 방법론적 시사)

  • This study discusses the nature of data-interpretation process in the perspective of modern hermeneutics and explores its methodological implications for qualitative research on the life of children. Discussions center around the basic concepts of modern hermeneutics, such as the conceptual distinctions between understanding and explanation, the intersubjective reality constituted between the child's horizon and the researcher's, the concept of the hermeneutics circle and the importance of the openness of language in understanding children's lifeworld. The conclusions are made as follows: First, the concept of "understanding", which is the basic concern of qualitative research on children, has a much different meaning from that of "explanation" in quantitative research. The task of understanding lies in interpreting the lived meaning in context as experienced by children in all its complexity. Second the researcher's subjectivity in the interpretation process has a dual function in that it can produce a faulty hermeneutics circle and yet it provides the researcher with the strong momentum to open up her understanding towards a deeper and wider level. Third, the reliability and the validity of qualitative research should be discussed within the interpretation process itself in that interpretation in qualitative research is guided basically by the researcher's internal dialectic: between data (text) and her subjectivity. Lastly, the language in interpretive research should be open and free in terms of style in order to present a fuller and richer description of children's lifeworld and the delicate textures of their lived meanings.

  • Although various criteria on the diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy are applied from trial to trial, being tailored in concert with its purpose, the utmost evidences of the diagnosis are subjective symptoms and objective signs of neurologic deficit. The application and interpretation of auxiliary electrophysiological test including nerve conduction study (NCS) should be made on the context of clinical pictures. The evaluation of the functions of small, thinly myelinated or unmyelinated nerve fibers has been increasingly stressed recently with the advent of newer techniques, e.g., measurement of intraepidermal fiber density, quantitative sensory testing, and autonomic function test. And the studies with those techniques have shed light to the nature of the evolution of diabetic neuropathy. The practical application of these techniques to the diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy in the individual patients, however, should be made cautiously due to several shortcomings: limited accessibility, wide overlapping zone between norm and abnormality with resultant unsatisfactory sensitivity and specificity, difficulty in performing subsequent tests, unproven quantitative correlation with clinical deficit, and invasiveness of some technique. NCS, as an extension of clinical examination, is still the most reliable electrophysiological test in evaluating neuropathy and gives the invaluable information about the nature of neuropathy, whereas the newer techniques need more refinement of the procedure and interpretation, and the accumulation of large scaled data of application to be considered as established diagnostic tools of peripheral neuropathy.

  • Holographic interferometry technique has been used for the measurement of whole-field deformation with high sensitivity. However there are some difficulties in quantitatively analyzing the holographic fringes. Recently, quantitative and automatic fringe analysis by using phase shifting method in interferometry has been studied in many fields. In this paper, a real time holographic interferometry system and a phase shifting method combined with digital image processing technique are employed to record and quantitatively analyze holographic fringe patterns. To evaluate our system and analyze errors, comparison of measured deformation with theoretical deformation of cantilever beam was carried out. The accuracy of 4.5% in our system was verified We have tried to apply this method to quantitatively measure the deformation of turbine blade under the bending force.
