  • The absolute clay mineral compositions and regional distribution of the 131 bulk marine surface sediments around the Jeju Island was compared to their relative compositions and distribution using quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. Average absolute clay mineral composition is illite 15.3% (0.5~40.5%), chlorite 2.6% (0~7.9%), and kaolinite 1% (0~5.6%). Total contents of the clay minerals are very high in the South Sea of Korea, northwestern part and southern offshore of Jeju Island. The average relative composition is illite 70.9% (16.7~89%), chlorite 21.5% (8.4~68.5%), and kaolinite 7.6% (0~29.3%). Relative illite contents are high in the northwestern and southeastern part of study area, and southern part of Jeju Island. Chlorite contents are high in the eastern part of study area and western part of Jeju Island. Kaolinite contents are high in the western and southern part of Jeju Island, and southern offshore of Jeju Isand. Absolute Distribution patterns are very similar to those of fine-grained (from clay to silt) sediment, whereas relative distribution patterns do not show any relationship with those of fine-grained sediment.

  • NMR study has been used for measuring precise quantity of the amorphous phase in the $Si_3N_4$powder. Care must be taken to allow the $^{29}$Si nuclear spin system to fully relax between pulses in order to make the signals proportional to the number of nuclei in each phase. $^{29}$Si MAS spectrum was decomposed into the three spectra of $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, and amorphous $Si_3N_4$assuming pseudo-Voigt function. Moreover, the Rietveld analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction data was performed to measure quantity of crystalline phases as $\alpha/\beta$ ratio.

  • Mineral compositions of 69 southeastern Yellow Sea surface sediments collected at the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) cruise in 2010, were determined using the quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. Southeastern Yellow Sea surface sediments are composed of major minerals (quartz 49.1%, plagioclase 13.0% and alkali feldspar 9.3%), clay minerals, calcite, and aragonite. Illite (9.4%) is the most abundant clay mineral, chlorite (4.6%) is the second, and kaolinite (0.8%) is few. Quartz and alkali feldspar contents are high in coarse-grained sediments, whereas amphibole and clay mineral contents are high in fine-grained sediments. Quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, chlorite, and kaolinite contents are higher, and illite content is lower in mud zone 1 corresponding to south margin of Central Yellow Sea Mud than in mud zone 2, a part of Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud. Difference of mineral composition between two mud zone suggests that source of fine sediment may be different in two mud zone and Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud might be largely supplied from the Keum and Youngsan rivers in southern part of the west coast in the Korean Peninsula.

  • A study on the thermal stability of commonly used six fillers, such as titanium dioxide, silica, ground calcium carbonate, zeolite, and, clay, showed that most fillers except titanium dioxide were strongly effected by heat treatment. Therefore, the present methods for determination of ash in paper give weight loss due to thermal decomposition of fillers. It was found that a paper ashing method at a temperature of 40$0^{\circ}C$ allows most fillers in their original and undecomposed from. Results presented in this paper also show that X-ray diffraction can be used for qualitative determination of mixed fillers and coating pigments in a paper sheet.

  • Mullite was synthesized by using kaolin and $\alpha$-alumina, and halloysite and aluminum hydroxide as raw materials at the various temperature in the range of 1200$^{\circ}$-1750$^{\circ}$C. The degree of mullitization was measured respectively by a quantitative X-ray diffraction method and a chemical analysis method. The rate and the maximum degree of mullitization were found to increase with temperature . The reaction completed at 1600$^{\circ}$Cfor less than 30 minutes, and yielded 98% mulllite inpurity in the case of kaolin-Al(OH)3. TiO$_2$ up to 3% was added to the batches of kaolin-Al(OH)$_3$. the effect of addition on the mullitization was investigated and found to decrease the sintering temperature for the mullitization. The mechanism of TiO$_2$ addition on the formation of mullite was also discussed.

  • This research was a fundamental study for the low temperature sintering of PZTN by glass phase transient processing. To lower the sintering temperature, the glass phase Processing was used. Also to improve the electrical properties, the transient processing was utilized. After characterization, the various analytic techniques, such as Archimedes method for the measuring densification, x-ray diffraction patterns for the quantitative analysis of crystalline phases were utilized. Also the dielectric constant, dissipation factor, and piezoelectric coefficients were measured to evaluate the PZTN sintered at the $950^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$. This was confirmed that the sintering temperature of PZTN was reduced by $950^{\circ}C$ and the electrical properties were improved by the transition processing. Therefore, the glass phase transient processing can be applicable to low the sintering temperature with the dielectric and piezoelectric properties.

  • The Polymerization of p-chlorophenyl propargyl ether (CPE) was carried out using various transition metal catalysts. The catalytic activity of $MoCl_{5}$-based catalysts was greater than that of $WCl_6$-based catalysts. $MoCl_5$ alone and $MoCl_{5}$-cocatalyst systems polymerized CPE very effectively to give a high yield of poly(CPE). In most cases, the polymer yield was quantitative and the average molecular weight $({\bar{M}}n)$ was in the range of 9,000 and 17,000. The NMR, IR, UV-visible spectra indicated that the present poly(CPE) has a linear conjugated polyene structure having p-chlorophenyl oxymethylene substituent. The poly(CPE) was mostly dark-brown colored powder and was completely soluble in various organic solvents such as chloroform, methylene chloride, THF, chlorobenzene, etc. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the present poly(CPE) is amorphous.
