Biplot of Ranked Data

  • Ranked data are widely used in the area of social sciences, for instance in polls and preference surveys, in which a number of objects (or stimuli) are evaluted and ranked by a panel of judges (or subject) according to their preference. We propose a graphical method for ranked data by quantifying objects and judges. In a plot for judges, the interpoint distances can be interpreted as Spearman or Kendall distance between two rankings given by respective judges. Similarly, we also construct a plot for objects with a sensible relationship to the previous plot for judges.

Parallel Coordinate Plots of Mixed-Type Data

  • Parallel coordinate plot of Inselberg (1985) is useful for visualizing dozens of variables, but so far the plot's applicability is limited to the variables of numerical type. The aim of this study is to extend the parallel coordinate plot so that it can accommodate both numerical and categorical variables. We combine Hayashi's (1950, 1952) quantification method of categorical variables and Hurley's (2004) endlink algorithm of ordering variables for the parallel coordinate plot. In line with our former study (Kwak and Huh, 2008), we develop Andrews' type modification of conventional straight-lines parallel coordinate plot to visualize the mixed-type data.

  • Partially ranked data refers to the situation in which there are p distinct objects; however each judge specifies only first s (s < p) choices. The group theoretic formulation for partially ranked data analysis was set up by Critchlow (1985). We propose a graphical method for partially ranked data by quantifying objects and judges. In a plot for judges, the interpoint distances can be interpreted as Spearman or Kendall distances between two rankings given by respective judges. Similarly, we also construct a plot for objects with a sensible relationship to the previous plot for judges. This study extends the Han and Huh (1995) quantification method of fully ranked data using Gabriel's (1971) biplot technique for multivariate data matrix.

  • 수량화 제3방법은 일본의 하야시(Hayashi)에 의해 창안된 교차표 분석 기법으로 사회조사 및 마케팅 조사 자료의 분석에서 매우 유용하다. 그러나 반응빈도가 작은 일부 범주들이 특이하게 큰 수량화 값을 갖는 경우가 있어 불안정한 과잉 해석으로 이어지기도 한다. 본 교신은 이 문제를 해결하고자 한 연구로서 수량화 제3방법을 새로 정식화하고 축소 해 (shrinkage solution)를 제안할 것이다. 그리고 실제 조사 자료에 새 방법론을 적용해 보고자 한다.

수분스트레스에 의한 케일 내 글루코시놀레이트 변화 (Variations of glucosinolates in kale leaves (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) treated with drought-stress in autumn and spring seasons)

  • The present study aimed to investigate the effects of drought stress on the accumulation of glucosinolates (GSLs) in the leaves of Kale cultivated in autumn and spring. HPLC analysis guided to identify seven GSLs including progoitrin, glucoraphanin, sinigrin, gluconapin, glucobrassicin, 4-methoxyglucobrassicin and neoglucobrasscin. Quantification of GSLs revealed that the contents of sigirin was the highest (45%) followed by the level of progoitrin (24%) in terms of total GSLs. The ranges of total GSL contents was 1.16 (84)-15.88 (89 DAS, ${\mu}mol/g$ dry wt. (DW)) in treatment plot and 1.23 (84)-7.05 (74 DAS, ${\mu}mol/g$ dry wt.) in control plot showed the enhancement in the contents of GSLs in treatment than in the control plot. The present results evidenced that the variation of total GSL contents were depending on the harvest period. In 105 DAS, comparatively no differences in the GSL contents on each sample in autumn season, whereas in spring season, although there was decrease in the GSLs tendency from 74 DAS to 84 DAS in both control and treatment plot, the GSL contents of treatment plot was dramatically increased in 89 DAS. In treatment plot, the GSL contents on 89 DAS (1.16) was 15 fold higher to 84 DAS ($15.88{\mu}mol/g$ DW). The variation in the contents of GSL in spring and autumn did not documented significant differences because of their differences in the growth time and cultivation conditions. In conclusion, the GSL contents in kale was likely to be affected by drought stress treatment. Scrutiny and further research for exact relation between drought stress and GSL contents in kale should be needed.

  • 집중에 관한 뇌파 해석은 인간의 인지 이해에 기본적인 요소이다. 본 연구에서는 시각자극에 대한 뇌의 집중, 비집중 상태의 차이특성을 비선형 분석하였다. 적은 샘플 데이터와 시간에 따른 변화특성을 해석하기 위하여 반복 정량 분석 법을 사용하였으며, 자극에 동기된 유발 전위의 반복궤적, 색상 반복 궤적을 도식화하였으며, 비선형 특징 파라미터들의 평균특징과 시변 특성을 추출하였다. 집중-비집중 도식과 파라미터 쌍은 위상공간 변환의 차원과 시간 지연을 결정하기 위한 정보를 제공하였으며, 집중 시의 뇌가 비집중 시의 뇌보다 복잡하다는 특징을 보였으며, 자극에 동기된 유발전위는 평균적 의미에서 동일 반응을 보이나 국부적으로는 환경과 상태에 따라 변화하였다. 본 실험을 통하여 시각자극에 대한 집중과 비집중 시 뇌의 비선형 현상을 해석하기 위한 가능성을 확인하였다.

Dry Season Evaporation From Pine Forest Stand In The Middle Mountains Of Nepal

  • The quantification of dry season evaporation in regions, where the magnitude of dry season flows is key to the regional water supply, is essential for good water management. Also, tree transpiration has a significant role in the water balance of a catchment whenever it is tree populated, especially in water limited environments. Such is the case in the Middle Mountains of Nepal where dry season flows play a significant role in downstream water provisioning and their proper functioning is key to the welfare of millions of people. This research seeks to study the transpiration of a pine forest stand in the Jikhu Khola Watershed in the Middle Mountains of Nepal. To the author's knowledge, no single study has been made so far to estimate the dry season evaporation from the planted forest stand in the Middle Mountains of Nepal. The study was carried out in planted pine forest embedded within the Jikhu Khola Catchment. Field campaigns of sap flow measurements were carried out from September, 2010 to February, 2011 in the selected plot of 15*15m dimension, to characterize dry season evaporation. This was done by measuring sap fluxes and sapwood areas over the six trees of different Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) classes. The sap flux was assessed using Granier's thermal dissipation probe (TDP) technique while sapwood area was determined using several incremental core(s) taken with a Pressler borer and immediately dyeing with methyl orange for estimating the actual depth of sapwood area. Transpiration of the plot was estimated by considering the contribution of each tree class. For this purpose, sap flux density, sapwood area and the proportion of total canopy area were determined for each tree class of the selected plot. From these data, hourly and diurnal transpiration rates for the plot were calculated for experimental period. Finally, Cienciala model was parameterized using the data recorded by the ADAS and other terrain data collected in the field. The calibrated model allowed the extrapolation of Sap flux density (v) over a six month period, from September 2010 to February 2011. The model given sap flux density was validated with the measured sap flux density from Grainier method.

Persistence and Degradation Pattern of Acequinocyl and Its Metabolite, Hydroxyl-Acequinocyl and Fenpyroximate in Butterburs (Petasites japonicus Max.)

  • Persistence and degradation patterns of acequinocyl and its metabolite, hydroxyl-acequinocyl (acequinocyl-OH) and fenpyroximate in butterburs (Petasites japonicus Max.) were investigated after pesticide application. Butterburs, one of the minor crops in South Korea, was planted in two plots (plot A for double and plot B for single application) in a greenhouse. Butterburs samples were also planted in a separate plot without pesticide treatment, as the control. A commercial pesticide containing acequinocyl and fenpyroximate was applied to the foliage of butterburs at hourly intervals after dilution. Recoveries of acequinocyl and acequinocyl-OH were 78.6-84.7% and 83.7-95.5%, respectively; the relative standard deviation of the two compounds were less than 5%. The method limit of quantification was 0.01 mg/kg. The total (Ʃ) acequinocyl residues in butterburs reduced by 96.0% at 14 days and 75.9% at 7 days, in plot A and B, respectively, after final pesticide applications. The biological half-life (DT50) of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate, calculated using the dissipation rate, was 3.0 days and 4.0 days, respectively. These data were used to set up maximum residue and safe standard levels when the pesticides are applied to control pests during butterbur cultivation. Risk assessment results showed that the maximum % acceptable daily intake was 7.74% for Ʃ acequinocyl and 0.16% for Ʃ fenpyroximate. The theoretical maximum daily intake of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate was 26.3% and 35.8%, respectively. In conclusion, the concentrations of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate in butterburs pose no significant health risks to Koreans.

Standardizing GC-FID Measurement of Nonmethane Hydrocarbons in Air for International Intercomparison Using Retention Index and Effective Carbon Number Concept

  • Accurate measurements of ozone precursors are required to understand the process and extent of ozone formation in rural and urban areas. Nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) have been identified as important ozone precursors. Identification and quantification of NMHCs are difficult because of the large number present and the wide molecular weight range encountered in typical air samples. A major plan of the research team of the Climate and Air Quality Taiwan Station (CATs) was the measurement of atmospheric nonmethane hydrocarbons. An analytical method has been development for the analysis of the individual nonmethane hydrocarbons in ambient air at ppb (v) and subppb(v) levels. The whole ambient air samples were collected in canisters and analyzed by GC-FID with $Al_2O_3$/KCl PLOT column. Our targeted for quantitative analysis 43 compounds that may be substantial contributors to ozone formation. The retention indices and molar response factors of some commercially available $C_2{\sim}C_{10}$ hydrocarbons were determined and used to identify and quantify air samples. A quality assurance program was instituted to ensure that good measurements were made by participating in the International Nonmethane Hydrocarbon Intercomparison Experiments (NOMHICE).

PLS 기법에 의한 (X,Y) 자료의 시각화 (Visualizing (X,Y) Data by Partial Least Squares Method)

  • PLS 회귀는 q-변량의 Y 변수에 대한 회귀에서 p-변량의 X 변수가 다중공선성의 문제를 갖는 경우에도 적용 가능한 방법이다. 특히 X 변수의 수 p가 관측개체 수 n보다 큰 경우에 적용 가능하여 계량화학(chemometrics) 분야에서 근적외선 분광기(near-infrared spectroscopy) 자료에 대한 표준적 분석 방법으로 활용되고 있다. 이 연구에서 우리는 PLS회귀의 방법론을 정리하고 이를 활용한 p개의 X 변수들과 q개의 Y 변수들의 동시 시각화를 위한 두 가지의 수량화 방법을 제안한다.
