  • As the 4th industrial revolution has been an emerging issue, the government and industry has paid increasing interest to smart factory. The Korean government has made efforts to establish smart manufacturing capabilities of small-to-medium sized firms by providing supports for smart factory. However, the effectiveness of the supports and satisfaction of firms have hardly been analyzed. This study aims to analyze firms' satisfaction by attributes of policy suuports for smart factory and identify priorities for government supports. The results show that 8 out of 11 attributes were one-dimensional and 3 were attractive attributes. Among the 11 attributes, funding support was the top priority. The attributes such as dispatching external experts, consulting for sophistication of smart-factory, and consulting for maintenance and repair were also high priorities. These results imply that firms prefer supports for maintenance and sophistication to adoption or initial establishment of smart factory.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the influencing factors of the patient leaning phenomenon in tertiary hospitals. Based on the results of this study, we intended to find implications for improving the problems of the delivery system imbalance in tertiary hospitals caused by patient leaning phenomenon. Methodology/Approach: Qualitative studies were conducted, using focus group interviews and in-depth interviews. The focus group interviews were conducted for 12 users of tertiary hospitals by 2 groups. And in-depth interviews were conducted for 6 tertiary hospital managers. This was considered to be the most effective approach to gather diverse and in-depth information about the influencing factor of patient leaning phenomenon in tertiary hospitals. Findings: In focus group interviews, the reason for choosing tertiary hospitals was the reliability of the hospital(physician, reputation, etc.). And the effect of the policy to strengthen coverage of National Health Insurance and private medical insurance was relatively small. In other words, we found that the individual's desire to receive medical services suitable for one's health status and disease condition was the biggest factor, rather than the cost and policy factors. Practical Implications: We suggested that the appropriate medical care provision should be strengthened according to the role and function of medical institutions. In addition, the education system needs to be reorganized to activate the referral program, expand community medical capabilities, and foster quality primary medical care.

  • Construction inspection is a crucial stage that ensures that all contractual requirements of a construction project are verified. The construction inspection capabilities among state highway agencies have been greatly affected due to budget reduction. As a result, efficient inspection practices such as risk-based inspection are required to optimize the use of limited resources without compromising inspection quality. Automated prioritization of textual requirements according to their criticality would be extremely helpful since contractual requirements are typically presented in an unstructured natural language in voluminous text documents. The current study introduces a novel model for predicting the risk level of requirements using machine learning (ML) algorithms. The ML algorithms tested in this study included naïve Bayes, support vector machines, logistic regression, and random forest. The training data includes sequences of requirement texts which were labeled with risk levels (such as very low, low, medium, high, very high) using the fuzzy logic systems. The fuzzy model treats the three risk factors (severity, probability, detectability) as fuzzy input variables, and implements the fuzzy inference rules to determine the labels of requirements. The performance of the model was examined on labeled dataset created by fuzzy inference rules and three different membership functions. The developed requirement risk prediction model yielded a precision, recall, and f-score of 78.18%, 77.75%, and 75.82%, respectively. The proposed model is expected to provide construction inspectors with a means for the automated prioritization of voluminous requirements by their importance, thus help to maximize the effectiveness of inspection activities under resource constraints.

  • Human-robot collaboration (HRC) is an emerging form of work anticipated to improve construction productivity by integrating robotic capabilities with human expertise. With the expected transition towards tasks that demand more cognitive efforts for human workers, considering the cognitive status of each co-worker, such as task engagement and vigilance, can become crucial to achieve high-quality human performance during HRC, potentially contributing to a more productive HRC in construction. However, the potential cognitive changes of each co-worker have remained unclear during HRC, as studies have primarily focused on identifying general trends from aggregated cognitive responses of people, in which an individual's response can be overlooked. In this study, we examine the cognitive response of each co-worker during HRC for a construction task. We observed the cognitive responses of 18 people while they were experiencing different collaborating conditions, such as the robot's different movement speed, during a bricklaying task with an arm-type collaborative robot. For each participant, we analyzed electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to identify the changes in cognitive status by using a wearable EEG headset. The results present that the cognitive responses of almost all the participants were significantly and differently affected during HRC, impacting the estimated productivity of their human-robot teams. The findings of the study present the importance of considering each co-worker's potentially unique cognitive response as a way to achieve cognitive wellbeing while pursuing high productivity within human-robot teams, potentially contributing to overall productive HRC in construction.

  • In many cases, the construction industry in Korea has a hierarchical structure in which a general contractor in charge of the entire project is subcontracted from the client and entrusts the construction to a specialty contractor in charge of detailed work types. In this structure, the general contractor manages and takes responsibility for the entire construction, but the person directly involved in the construction is an individual specialty contractor, so the quality and safety of the facilities will vary according to their construction and management capabilities. In order to solve quality and safety problems that may arise due to the difference between the person receiving the order for construction and the person who actually constructs it, it is necessary to let the person who receives the order perform the construction directly for projects under a certain amount. The system introduced for this purpose is the direct construction mandatory system. As described above, although this system was introduced to prevent bad construction and risk transfer, it is a system that has various problems due to the characteristics of the domestic construction industry, institutional limitations, and practical problems, so it is necessary to improve it legally and institutionally.
