  • Filtering the data for travel time records obtained from DSRC probes is essential for a better estimation of the link travel time. This study addresses the major deficiency in the performance of TRANSGUIDE in removing anomalous data. This algorithm is unable to handle unstable traffic flow conditions for certain time intervals, where fluctuations are observed. In this regard, this study proposes an algorithm that is capable of overcoming the weaknesses of TRANSGUIDE. If TRANSGUIDE fails to validate sufficient number of observations inside one time interval, another process specifies a new validity range based on the median absolute deviation (MAD), a common statistical approach. The proposed algorithm suggests the parameters, ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$, to consider the maximum allowed outlier within a one-time interval to respond to certain traffic flow conditions. The parameter estimation relies on historical data because it needs to be updated frequently. To test the proposed algorithm, the DSRC probe travel time data were collected from a multilane highway road section. Calibration of the model was performed by statistical data analysis through using cumulative relative frequency. The qualitative evaluation shows satisfactory performance. The proposed model overcomes the deficiency associated with the rapid change in travel time.

  • The present study investigated the effects of aging on Leydig cells of Sprague Dawley rats. Rats of 3, 6, 12 and 18 months of age were used. Testes of rat were fixed by whole body perfusion using a fixative containing 2.5% glutaraldehyde in cacodylate buffer, processed and embedded in epon-araldite. Using $1{\mu}m$ sections stained with methylene blue, qualitative and quantitative morphological studies were performed. Testis incubations were used to determine luteinizing hormone (LH; 100 ng/ml) stimulated testosterone secretory capacity per testis in vitro. Testosterone levels in the incubation medium, and testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels in serum of these four groups of rats were determined by radioimmunoassay. Morphological studies revealed that Leydig cells were more abundant in the testis interstitium at 6, 12 and 18 months when compared with 3 months. The volumes of Leydig cells per testis was significantly higher, at 6, 12 and 18 months of age than those at 3 months. The number of Leydig cells per testis was doubled at 6, 12 and 18 months of age compared with 3 months. The average volume of a Leydig cell was not significantly different between 3 and 6 months of age, however, at 12 and 18 months a significantly lower value was observed. LH-stimulated testosterone production per testis in vitro was reduced by 45% at 6 months of age compared with 3 months; a further significant reduction was observed at 12 and 18 months. Serum testosterone and LH levels were not significantly different between 3 and 6 months of age but at 12 and 18 months a significantly lower value was observed in both groups for these hormones. These results showed that signs of aging are apparent in Leydig cells of Sprague Dawley rats at 12 months of age.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbial hazards posed by food utensils and fixtures in food service operations at selected middle and high schools located in Seoul, Korea. Methods: We collected 200 samples of utensils and fixtures including cups, spoons/chopsticks, food trays and tables from five different schools in Seoul. Target microorganisms of this study were divided into two groups: total bacterial count and total coliform as indicators of microbial contamination and Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus as pathogens of food poisoning. We used selective media to quantify microbial concentration and 16S rRNA PCR assay for qualitative analysis. In addition, intensive interviews with nutritionists were conducted and observations were made to identify factors that may affect microbial contamination. Logistic regression analysis was employed to examine the relationship between the microbial concentration and operation characteristics of each operation. Results: The level of microbial concentration in school B and C were significantly lower than in school A, D and E (p<0.05). Some samples from school A, D and E showed over 3.4 log CFU/100 $cm^2$ (total bacterial count) and 1.0 log CFU/100 $cm^2$ (total coliform), which requires immediate hygienic action. The number of customers per staff member, periodicity of hygiene education for staff and daily operation time of sterilizers were also found to be important factors related with the microbial contamination of food service operations. Conclusions: These results suggested that not only a HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) approach, but also efforts to assess internal risk factors within operations be needed to reduce the microbial contamination of food utensils and fixtures. This study is expected to provide preliminary data for assessing microbial hazards in food service operations.

  • Many researches have been focused on localization in WSNs. However, the solutions for localization in static WSN are hard to apply to the mobile WSN. The solutions for mobile WSN localization have the assumption that there are a significant number of anchor nodes in the networks. In the resource limited situation, these solutions are difficult in applying to the static and mobile mixed WSN. Without using the anchor nodes, a localization service cannot be provided in efficient, accurate and reliable way for mixed wireless sensor networks which have a combination of static nodes and mobile nodes. Also, accuracy is an important consideration for localization in the mixed wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we presented a method to satisfy the requests for the accuracy of the localization without anchor nodes in the wireless sensor networks. Hop coordinates measurements are used as an accurate method for anchor free localization. Compared to the other methods with the same data in the same category, this technique has better accuracy than other methods. Also, we applied a minimum spanning tree algorithm to satisfy the requests for the efficiency such as low communication and computational cost of the localization without anchor nodes in WSNs. The Java simulation results show the correction of the suggested approach in a qualitative way and help to understand the performance in different placements.

  • This study attempts to evaluate the Korean terrestrial television networks‘ internet site effectiveness, specifically in addressing user motivations and user evaluations and in gauging the broadcasters' feedback. The result shows that the primary motive for using a broadcaster's internet homepage was to obtain information. Overall, the users tended to be dissatisfied with the services, especially with regards to its navigational structure and design and with the insufficient number of appropriate content items. The reason cited highest for dissatisfaction was the fee-based services. Among the three networks, Seoul Broadcasting System, the sole commercial network, received the most complaints from the respondents in this respect. The study results reveal that broadcasters' feedback systems to users were deemed responsive and timely, but a true interactivity between the broadcasters and the viewers was lacking. In conclusion, network televisions' internet sites and increased content access through them have provided a platform for increased communication with their viewers, however, these sites are not yet being fully utilized as effective interactive communication feedback channels but more as a unidirectional information source. In addition, the network television services seem to be lacking in providing users with efficient navigational structure, good design, or adequate content level and quality. Thus, to better serve the public, it is recommended that they improve internet homepage usability by assessing and applying qualitative researches regarding the users.

  • In this study, a comprehensive field monitoring was conducted to understand habitat conditions of fish species in up and downstream of Hoengseong Dam. Based on the monitoring data, riverine health conditions such as composition ratio of fish species, bio-diversity (dominance index, diversity, evenness and richness), index of biological integrity (IBI) and qualitative habitat evaluation index (QHEI) were assessed, and optimal ecological flowrates (OEF) were estimated using the habitat suitability indexes (HSI) established for three fish species Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Pungtungia herzi and Microphysogobio longidorsalis selected as icon species using the physical habitat simulation system (PHABSIM). The total number of species sampled was 20 species, and two species of Zacco platypus (30.4%) and C. splendidus (20.9%) dominated the fish community. As a result, it was revealed that IBI and QHEI values decreased from upstream to downstream along the river. The estimated IBI value ranged from 24 to 36 with average being 30.9 out of 50, rendering the site ecologically fair to good health conditions. HSI for C. splendidus were determined according to three different month in terms of season: Spring (April), Summer (August) and Autumn (October). HSI for flow velocity were estimated at 0.7 to 0.8 m/s for the Spring, 0.5 to 1.0 m/s for the Summer and 0.8 to 0.9 m/s for the Autumn. HSI for water depth were estimated at 0.3 to 0.5 m for the Spring; 0.3 to 0.5 m for the Summer; and 0.3 to 0.4 m for the Autumn. OEF was estimated at 4.2 and $6.5m^3/s$ for the Spring and Autumn, and $12.0m^3/s$ for the Summer. Overall, it was concluded that the Hoengseong Dam has been relatively well protected from the anthropogenic disturbance for the legally protected species including the endemic species studied in this study.

  • There is considerable interests in the effect of regular, vigorous exercise, in particular weight training as a possible measure in improving myocardial function. The present investigation aimed to examine possible effect of a long-term weight training program on the heart in aging rats. Male rats aged 3-,10-, and 20-month-old were divided at random into a control (sedentary) and the exercise group. The training group was exercised for 5 days a week by 1 RM of ten times with weight training apparatus. This investigation examined the changes of the heart muscle relative to histological, ultrastructural, cytochemical, and stereological studies in rats. Quantity of lipofuscin pigments was clearly increased in the weight training group of 15-month-old rats, and mitochondrial degeneration, vacuolization, and interstitial proliferation were observed as well. In the weight training group of 25-month-old rats the frequency as separated intercalated discs, fraying myofibrils and hypercontraction band increased in number compared with the same 15-mon1h-old group. From the experimental result of glucose-6-phosphatase activity, the enzyme activities decreased in the weight training group of 15-month-old rats, and more decreased in the same 25-month-old group. In stereological study, both 15- and 25-month-old training groups, mitochondrial and myofibrilar volume densities significantly decreased, whereas interstitial volume density significantly increased. From the experimental results obtained in the present study, it is suggested that long-term weight training exercise do not cause any significantly qualitative and quantitative ultrastructural change of the heart muscle in the young. On the contrary, long-term weight training exercise stress may actually induce degenerative changes in the heart muscle in the old age.

  • This paper proposes a method of boosting-based classification for the purpose of real-time face detection. The proposed method uses depth images to ensure strong performance of face detection in response to changes in lighting and face size, and uses the depth difference feature to conduct learning and recognition through the I-MCTBoost classifier. I-MCTBoost performs recognition by connecting the strong classifiers that are constituted from weak classifiers. The learning process for the weak classifiers is as follows: first, depth difference features are generated, and eight of these features are combined to form the weak classifier, and each feature is expressed as a binary bit. Strong classifiers undergo learning through the process of repeatedly selecting a specified number of weak classifiers, and become capable of strong classification through a learning process in which the weight of the learning samples are renewed and learning data is added. This paper explains depth difference features and proposes a learning method for the weak classifiers and strong classifiers of I-MCTBoost. Lastly, the paper presents comparisons of the proposed classifiers and the classifiers using conventional MCT through qualitative and quantitative analyses to establish the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed classifiers.

  • Anatomical features of both leaves and stems of the four mistletoes in Korea (Viscum album var. coloratum, Korthalsella japonica, Loranthus yadoriki, L. tanaka) and of their secondary haustorial structure within several host plants were investigated. Among the four mistletoes, there were diagnostic characters of the anatomy of leaves and stems which enabled us to distinguish the four taxa. Leaves were observed to have three distinct characters including unifacial or bifacial leaves, the number of vascular bundles in the midveins, and the level of development of sclerenchyma cells. There were four diagnostic characters of stems: overall morphology of stems in transverse view, degree of cuticle development, arrangement of vascular bundles, and features of the sclerenchyma and pith. In order to determine secondary haustorial traits, the research focused on the seven host plants of L. yadoriki and on the five host plants of K. japonica. The following features were found to be important: presence or absence of an aerial runner root, the shape of the haustorial strand and flange, the degree of penetration into host tissues, and their development of shaft in transverse view, the development both of secondary haustorial cells and short tracheid in hyphae. Korthalsella japonica and L. yadorki were clearly distinguished by these characters. The secondary haustorial forms in each host were somewhat different, due to varying degrees of development in the strength of the host plants' wood. However, qualitative characters like the final position of the secondary haustorial penetration into host tissues and the development of short tracheid cells were not only affected by the degree of development of the host plants, but also useful for the systematic study.
