  • Objectives : This study is designed to explore the experience of patients who received facial Qigong exercise education, to identify whether facial Qigong exercise is effective for Bell's Palsy patients and to aid in developing a more efficient exercise program. Methods : Eight patients who visited the Facial Palsy Center in Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital between September 2014 and December 2014 for treatment of Bell's palsy were interviewed. All patients received facial Qigong exercise education at least two times. The interview was conducted for 20 to 30 minutes and included discussion related to the experience of facial palsy, facial Qigong exercise and suggestions for a more efficient facial Qigong program. Results : The patients replied that they experienced emotions such as anxiety, depression and confusion when they discovered the symptoms of facial palsy. They also suggested that they had regained mental stability and physically recovered through facial Qigong exercise and also suggested possible improvements for the system of facial Qigong exercise in terms of time/place/educator. Conclusions : The results from the interviews suggest that facial Qigong exercise might be an effective treatment for Bell's Palsy patients from a psychological and physical perspective. A more patient-centered environment should be established to ensure efficient treatment.

  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of four common types of Qigong position (standing, sitting, supine, and horse-riding position) on the autonomic nervous system. Thirty healthy subjects participated in this study once a week for four weeks. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was measured three times (before, during, and after the position) while the subject maintained one of four positions for ten minutes. There were significant changes in HRV components compared with EEG power spectra in the standing position. Especially, the ratio of low-to-high frequency (LF/HF) which represents a state of balance of autonomic nervous system was increased. In the sitting position, $\beta$ wave which reflects a state of alert consciousness was increased and both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves were activated. On the other hand, in the spine position, $\theta$ wave which signifies a state of relaxation was increased and heart rate (HR) was decreased. Activation of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves was also observed in this position. Significant increases of indices related to awakening and concentration were observed accompanied by increase of HR and a sympathetic nerve was activated in the riding-horse position. In the present study, it was shown that each Qigong position caused various and significant changes in autonomic nervous system. It would be expected that these results can be applied in the choice of appropriate Qigong position according to objective of Qigong therapy although it is remained to further evaluate the effects of long-term maintenance of Qigong positions and repeated Qigong training.

  • The etiology of chronic headache is not yet fully explained, the treatment of this symptom is not simple. We show the effect of Qigong therapeutics applied on chronic headache patient, in order to establish a primary data for further studies of new treatments. We treated 2 times a weeks for 3 weeks. The acupoints, (太陽穴)(Ex-HN5), (老龍穴), (大趾甲下穴), and (百會穴)(GV20) were stimulated for 10 seconds by Qigong-Acupuncture, and after that Qigong therapy was performed for 30 minutes The effects were analyzed using VAS scores, PPI(Present Pain Intensity), HI(Headache Index) and HDI(The Henry Ford Headache Disability Inventory). We concluded that Qigong therapeutics applied on chronic headache patient showed effects of relieving pain, improving general activities and changing the mood. Further researches are needed to evaluate the distinct functional mechanism of Qigong therapeutics, hut this study is meaningful in the sense that it will act as a fundamental study to build on.

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to perform a scoping review to describe clinical study trends on Qigong in order to identify further directions of Qigong in Korean medicine. Methods: Under the Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework, PubMed was searched to identify articles published from January 1, 2019 to June 28, 2021. A total of 224 articles were retrieved. Results were systematically filtered by two independent reviewers based on inclusion/exclusion criteria. Publication information, disease, intervention and research results of a total of 153 articles were extracted and analyzed. Results: Asia had the largest number of Qigong studies (82 studies, 65%). Most research studies were conducted in the academic field of Medicine (n=109, 86.5%), including Complementary and Alternative Medicine (n=35), Medicine (miscellaneous) (n=15), and Oncology (n=15). Based on ICD-10 classification, Mental and Behavioral Disorder (n=25, 19.8%) was the most frequently analyzed decease, followed by Neoplasm (n=24) and Disease of the Nervous system (n=12). Almost half of all studies were Systematic Reviews. RCTs only accounted for 25.4%. Interventions were very diverse and inconsistent. Sixty (47.6%) studies analyzed Qigong as a single intervention. In 66 cases, Qigong was analyzed as part of a large category such as Mind-Body intervention. Most studies designed a Donggong (動功) program. The age of the population was relatively high as 47.1% of all studies were conducted on middle aged or older adults. Conclusions: These findings suggest that further standardized research on Qigong, especially Junggong (靜功), needs to be conducted by developing research protocols and practice programs to verify effects of Qigong and utilize Qigong as a medical intervention in Korean Medicine.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze an effect of medical Qigong therapy using Dong Chu Chim (DCC) which was invented by "Dongchu Han Medicine Institute", by measuring HRV. We compared effects of DCC with non-treatment, filiform acupuncture and filiform acupuncture with natural abdominal breathing. Methods : 1. The authors stimulated Nogung (PC8) of 26 normal adults by using DCC or filiform acupuncture in turn. 2. The natural abdominal breathing has been carried comfortably with consciousness in the lower abdomen. 3. HRV was measured for 5 minutes, three times (pre-treatment, during-treatment and post-treatment). Results and Conclusions : From this study, it seems that the stimulus of DCC, filiform acupuncture, filiform acupuncture with natural abdominal breathing can all affect the autonomic nervous system and control the balance of that. But there were not significant differences between these stimulus groups and the non-treatment group. Therefore, we suggest additional studies about the effect of DCC in the future.

  • Background: Qigong is highly favoured among Asian breast cancer survivors for enhancing health. This study examined the hypothesis that quality of life (QoL) in the Qigong group is better than the placebo (aerobic) or usual care group. Materials and Methods: A total of 197 participants were randomly assigned to either the 8-week Kuala Lumpur Qigong Trial or control groups in 2010-2011. Measurement taken at baseline and post-intervention included QoL, distress and fatigue. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and Kruskal Wallis were used to examine for differences between groups in the measurements. Results: There were 95 consenting participants in this 8week trial. The adherence rates were 63% for Qigong and 65% for the placebo group. The Qigong group showed significant marginal improvement in Quality of life scores compared to placebo (mean difference=7.3 unit; p=0.036), compared to usual care (mean difference=6.7 unit; p=0.048) on Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-Breast measure. There were no significant changes between the placebo and usual care groups in fatigue or distress at post intervention (8-week). Conclusions: Cancer survivors who participated in the Qigong intervention showed slightly better QOL. Follow up studies are greatly needed to evaluate which subgroups may best benefit from Qigong. With a steep rise of cancer survivors, there is an urgent need to explore and engage more cultural means of physical activity to fight side effects of treatment and for cancer control in developing countries.

This means that the aging society is rapidly progressing. Geniatric diseases also have increased due to increasing of the aged population. Along with an increase of the aged patient, the anti-aging, prevention of geniatric disease and quality of life is tending high on social concern and medical issues. Many reports showed the evidence to the positive anti-aging effect of Oriental medicine. Qigong therapy, a kind of Oriental medicine, has been used to prevent aging and life prolongation with positive effect for many thousand years. Therefore, qigong practice is popular and common to middle age and old age in China.
