Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in kind, intensity and depth of de Qi sensation by patients' gender, age, BMI and sensitivity. Methods: Sixty-four healthy volunteers (mean age $26.51{\pm}4.72$, range 22-39) who had been studying anatomy, meridianology, acupuncture & moxibustion for more than five years at Dongguk University, Go-yang, Korea, were invited to take part in an investigation of the sensations associated with acupuncture needling. Needling was self-administered on Hegu (LI4) in the hand and Zusanli (ST36) in the leg randomly. After obtaining de Qi, the participants were asked the kind, intensity and depth of de Qi sensation. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the kind of de Qi sensation found by acupoints and needling methods (p>0.05). Hegu (LI4) was found to be significantly higher in the intensity (p<0.001), and the depth of de Qi sensation was significantly higher in Zusanli (ST36) than Hegu (LI4) (p<0.001). There was statistically significant difference found in the intensity of de Qi sensation by depth and sensitivity (p<0.05). In the depth of de Qi sensation, there was statistically significant difference found by sensitivity (p<0.05). In de Qi sensation of practitioners, there was statistically significant difference found by gender, BMI, the intensity of de Qi sensation (VAS) and sensitivity. Conclusions: Further study involving acupuncture de Qi sensation and the influencing factors is needed.
The objective of this study is to analyze the effects of the food waste reducing campaign on food service. For this purpose, the author analyzed the quantity of food waste before and after the Quality Improvement(QI) activity and investigated employees' satisfaction with food service. Statistical data analyses were completed using the SPSS 11.0 program. The results can be summarized as follows : The number of employees who used the food service was 374.29$\pm$25.120 before QI and 332.89$\pm$27.274 after QI, so it decreased significantly after QI. The daily quantity of waste food was 39.52$\pm$3.060kg before QI and 19.58$\pm$4.825kg after QI, so it decreased significantly after QI. The quantity of waste food per person was 105.84$\pm$8.907g before QI and 59.07$\pm$15.125g after QI, so it decreased significantly after QI. Among 7 items related to employees' satisfaction, the taste of food was 3.30$\pm$0.890 before QI and 3.51$\pm$0.665 after QI, so it improved significantly after QI. No significant difference was found in the variety of menus, saltiness, temperature and compatibility of side dishes and tableware hygiene but employees appeared to be more satisfied with these items after QI. Employees' satisfaction with kindness/appearance did not show a significant difference but employees appeared to be less satisfied with it after QI.

Back ground and Objective : There is a need for objectification and scientific verification of Pattern identification in Oriental medicine. The purpose of this study was to investigate the skin characteristics of Qi deficiency and Blood deficiency animal models. Material and Methods : Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups: normal group, Qi deficiency group and Blood deficiency group. The Qi deficiency animal model was induced through restriction of food (75g/kg/day) for 20 days. Blood deficiency animal model was induced by bleeding from tail vein(0.3 ml/time) 8 times. The normal animal model was kept without any intervention. The general condition was observed by measuring body weight, body temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and hematological and biochemical parameters. The skin characteristics were observed by measuring the erythema index(EI), melanin index(Ml), transepidermal water loss(TEWL) and dermal microcirculation. Results : 1. In the Qi deficiency group, body weight was lower than the other groups. In the Qi deficiency group, blood pressure was lower than in the Normal group. There was no difference in body temperature and pulse rate between the three groups. 2. In the Qi deficiency group, blood sugar was lower than in the Blood deficiency group. There was no difference in triacylglycerol between the three groups. In the Qi deficiency group, the WBC count was lower than in the Blood deficiency group. RBC count was highest in the Qi deficiency group, Normal group and Blood deficiency group respectively. In the Qi deficiency group, Hb and Hct were higher than the other groups. 3. EI and MI were decreased in the Qi deficiency group, and EI showed a significant decrease. 4. EI and MI were increased in the Blood deficiency group, and MI showed a significant increase. 5. TEWL was significantly increased in the Qi deficiency group, while it was decreased in the Blood deficiency group, TEWL was highest in the Qi deficiency group, Normal group and Blood deficiency group respectively and all three groups showed significant difference. 6. In the Qi deficiency group, dermal microcirculation was lower than the other groups. Conclusion : The above results show that the erythema index decreases in the Qi deficiency model, and the melanin index increases in the Blood deficiency model. The Qi deficiency animal model shows an increase in transepidermal water loss, while the Blood deficiency animal model shows a decrease. Further studies should develop new models of Pattern Identification that are more specific.
Objectives : This study was designed to investigate the difference between genuine and pseudo halitosis about qi stagnation and stress. Methods : We recruited 63 halitosis patients who visited the halitosis clinic in the Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital from June 2012 to August 2013. We classified the halitosis patients into two groups, genuine and pseudo halitosis based on organoleptic assesment (OLT) score and evaluated the severity of self-reported halitosis using visual analog scale (VAS), amount of sulfide compounds using Halimeter, qi stagnation level using qi stagnation questionnaire and stress levels using heart rate variability (HRV) parameters. Results : Comparing the genuine halitosis group and the pseudo halitosis group, there was no significant difference in VAS of halitosis but significant difference in halimeter score. Distribution of qi stagnation and non-qi stagnation groups was significantly different between genuine and pseudo halitosis. Compared to the genuine halitosis group, the pseudo halitosis group showed a significant higher value of low frequency/high frequency ratio (LF/HF ratio). Conclusions : The result of this study suggest that there is significant difference about qi stagnation and stress level between genuine halitosis and pseudo halitosis patients, so when approaching pseudo halitosis patients, we should consider their psychological and emotional status.
The objective of this article is to induce that the conception of 'Qi-jul(氣質) and Qi-pum(氣稟)' was introduced to the Sasang(四象) Constitutional Medicine from bibliographic study on the theory of 'Qi-pum(氣稟)'. The conclusions summerized as followings. 1. In the oriental medicine, qualitative difference of 'zheng-qi(正氣)' among the individuals, the opposing power against a disease, is regarded as constitution. Having been used as 'nature(素)', 'quality(質)' and 'character(氣質)' in the oriental medical book, the word of 'Che-Jil(體質)' was used in good earnest at the end of 'Qing(情)' dynasty. 2. The nature(性) is divided into two, original nature(本然之性) and charicteristic nature(氣質之性) in the 'New confucianism(新儒學)' and the former means a principle(理), is a pure and good thing and used as a conception of universality, the latter is a principle of character and a imperfect imitation of principle(理). 3. It was repeatedly confirmed that 'Qi-jil and Qi-pum' meant the difference among the individuals by the dispute of 'Li-Qi(理氣)' caused by Lee Hwang(李滉) and Lee Yi(李耳) and by that of 'Ho-Rak(湖洛)' in the Ch'o-son(朝鮮) dynasty. 4. Han Sok-Ji, based on Meng-Zi(孟子)'s doctrine that man's inborn nature is good, criticized the theory of 'Qi-pum' which was 'Zhu-Zi(朱子)'s opinion and his opinion about the life(命) was thought to clue to the classification of the 'Sasang(四象)' invented by Lee Je-Ma as Park Se-Dang's theory that everyone has common nature but has different life(命). 5. By introducing the theory of 'Qi-pum' and the conception of life(命) which was understood as a special character by Han Sok-Ji and Park Se-Dang to Sa-sang constitutional medicine, Lee Je-Ma explained the reason why each man who was classified four constitutions, 'Taiyang'(太陽), 'Taiyin'(太陰), 'Shaoyang'(少陽), 'Shaoyin'(少陰), had the different formation of the visceral department(臟局).
The purpose of this research which, surveyed target hospitals, was to evaluate job operations by surveying the influences of Quality Improvement (QI) activities in various divisions related to a decrease in their back-up orders. Statistical data analyses were completed using the SPSS 11.0 program. The results can be summarized as follows Before QI there were 147 cases of back-up orders ; after QI there were 83 cases, decrease of 64 cases. This was 44%, less than the projected goal of 50%. For each item, there was a decrease of 40 nurse cases, 9 patients and patron cases,9 test surgery deliverly cases and 5 doctor cases after QI. The registering of midnight meals was not shown after QI, due to the Order Communication System (OCS) settlement. After performing QI, the average manual operation per month was reduced from 840 minutes to 498 minutes, of which the difference was 342 minutes, and the average of 342 minutes per month could be used for the peculiar operation of each division. This QI activity provided a good opportunity for establishing cooperation among divisions in providing meals to patients through interactions among divisions. It was recognized that these interactions were effective only when medical services were achieved through organized cooperation among divisions. Among the 7 items included on the patient satisfaction questionnaire, “satisfaction with offered menus” (p<0.01) showed significantly higher scores before QI. However “satisfaction with meal times” (p<0.01) showed significantly lower scores before QI.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the difference about pathogenesis of skin type. the theory that explains each individual react to certain stress is generally accepted in traditional oriental medicine. The aim of this experiment is to find out relationship between the effect of facial condition and the vital conditions of traditional Oriental medicine. We recognized that pattern identification of fluid-humor could be divided into 4 different groups. The reason is that the fluid-humor could be interpreted as Qi & Blood, furthermore Qi & Blood were categorized into deficiency and excess groups. Korean female volunteers in good health participated in this experiment. Three doctors of Oriental medicine classified them into 4 groups based on qi-blood and deficiency-excess concept(qi-deficiency; qi-excess:qi-stagnation; blood-deficiency; blood-excess:static-blood). Volunteers were assessed with non-invasive skin measuring devices. And we analyzed the correlation of skin physiological parameters with vital conditions; moisture, sebum and elasticity. Measurement moisture and sebum of facial skin tended to deacease only in static blood group.
The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of non-offered meal on waste reduction in foodservice. To this end, the quantity of non-offered meal before and after Quality Improvement(QI) activity was analyzed, and employee satisfaction with foodservice was investigated. Statistical data analyses can be summarized as follows: The daily quantity of non-offered meal decreased significantly after QI(p<0.001)($27.80{\pm}3.14\;kg$ before QI and $7.22{\pm}4.17\;kg$ after QI). Among 7 items related to employee satisfaction, kindness of meal service staffs improved significantly after QI(p<0.05)($4.05{\pm}0.74$ before QI and $4.21{\pm}0.17$ after QI). No significant difference was found in the variety of menus, or cooking/seasoning of food, and there seemed to be greater satisfaction with taste of food after QI.
Objective : This paper was designed to confirm the relation between Li Dong-yuan(李東垣)'s theory of internal injury(內傷學說) and Neo-confucianism(新儒學)'s academic orientation, particularly Zhang Heung-qu(張橫渠)'s 'Qi-monism(氣一元論)'. Method : Through a comparative literature review, I searched for the commonality between Li Dong-yuan(李東垣)'s theory of internal injury(內傷學說) and Neo-confucianism(新儒學)'s academic orientation, particularly Zhang Heung-qu(張橫渠)'s 'Qi-monism(氣一元論)', and also examined the difference in the meaning of 'Primordial Qi(元氣)' in Qi-monism and that Lee Dong-yuan proposed. Result & Conclusion : The central theme of Neo-confucianism, 'Staying on the Golden Path(允執厥中)', has a commonality with Li Dong-yuan's theory of internal injury that emphasized Primordial Qi, and the concepts of "Great Vacuity as Qi(太虛卽氣)", "Two Properties Inherent in a Single Object(一物兩體)", and "the Nature of Acquired Disposition(氣質之性)" have commonality with the concepts of "The Given from the Vacuity of Natural World(所受於天)", Up & Down Movement(升降運動), and Yin Fire(陰火) of Primordial Qi in Li Dong-yuan's theory of internal injury respectively. However, the concept of Primordial Qi in the Theory of Qi-monism refers to the building blocks of all things in the universe, whereas the concept of Primordial Qi that Li Dong-yuan proposed has no meaning of component of body but driving force that maintains the phenomenon of life.

Background and Objective : There are a lot of theories that explained the aging process, and the oxidative stress is one of the important theory that explained the aging process. The aim of this study was to investigate active oxygen and antioxidant capacity of Qi deficiency and Blood deficiency animal models. Material and Methods : Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups: normal group, Qi deficiency group and Blood deficiency group. The Qi deficiency animal model was induced through restriction of food (12g/kg/day) for 20 days. Blood deficiency animal model was induced by bleeding from tail vein(0.4ml/time) 8 times. The normal animal model was kept without any intervention. The oxidative stress was observed by measuring the active oxygen and antioxidant capacity. Results and Conclusion : 1. Active oxygen was significantly increased in the Qi deficiency group and Blood deficiency group. (P=0.061) 2. Antioxidant capacity was increased in the Qi deficiency group and Blood deficiency group. But there is no significant difference. (P=0.113)
