The potential natural vegetation of Seonunsan area, southwestern Korea, was inferred from the actual vegetation. In previous two papers the plant communities of actual vegetation of the area is grouped into nine types; Quercus variabilis, Pinus densiflora, Carpinus tschonoskii, Quercus serrata, Camellia japonica (plantation), Quercus aliena, Pinus thunbergii, Zelkova serrata and Carpinus laxiflora forest. With the analysis of species richness, age structure and various informations on vegetation changes of the plant communities, two paths of late stage succession are suggested in climatic climax starting from Pinus densiflora forest in the area. One is through Quercus variabilis forest to Carpinus laxiflora forest in upper parts of the mountain and the other through Quercus aliena forest to Carpinus tschonoskii forest in lower parts of the mountain. With analysis of actual vegetation and the examination of informations including human activities in the area, the potential natural vegetation of the area was inferred. The potential natural vegetation of the area was mainly composed of Carpinus laxiflora, Carpinus tschonoskii, Pinus densiflora and Zelkova serrata forest. The actual vegetation map and potential natural vegetation map (scale, 1:25, 000) and other results from this study might be the useful data for the protection of natural vegetation and restoration of the current vegetation.
User's impacts on trail deteriorations and edge vegetation were studied in Sokri Mountain National Park in 1990. The entire width, bare width and maximum depth of trail as the trail condition were significantly greater on the more heavily used trail. Deteriorations of trail which were surveyed at the total of 52 were significantly different from those of non-deteriorated points. The dominant trees in the crown layer of trail edge are as follows. According as the altitude rises, the changes happen from Quercus serrata to Quercus variabilis, Pinus densiflora, and to Quercus mongolica at Joongsajaam course, and from Pinus densiflora, Quercus variabilis to Quercus mongolica at Birosanjang course. And Stephanandra incisa, Symplocos chinesis for. pilosa show high relative dominant value at Joongsajaam course, Lindera obtusiloba, Fraxinus sieboldiana show one at Birosanjang course.
This study was conducted to examine litter inputs and litter decomposition rates following thinning, which is among the most important forest management activities that enhance the beneficial functions in Korean forests. Litter inputs and litter decomposition rates following a 2-year elapse from thinning in Pinus densiflora and following a 7-year elapse from thinning in Quercus variabilis stands were measured for 2 years from 16 sites in three regions (Sancheong-gun, Uiryeong-gun, and Jinju-si) in Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. Annual needle litter inputs in P. densiflora stands were significantly decreased following thinning, whereas annual broadleaved leaf litter inputs in Q. variabilis stands were not significantly different between thinned and unthinned treatments. The annual mean total litter inputs in both tree species were significantly lower in the thinned (P. densiflora: 3,653 kg ha-1 year-1; Q. variabilis: 4,963 kg ha-1 year-1) compared to the unthinned stands (P. densiflora: 5,138 kg ha-1 year-1; Q. variabilis: 5,997 kg ha-1 year-1) during the study period. The mass loss rates from decomposing needle litter in P. densiflora stands were significantly lower (p<0.05) in the thinned stands than in the unthinned stands for two sampling dates of the eight included in the study, whereas the decomposition rates from decomposing leaf litter in Q. variabilis stands were not affected by thinning. The results indicate that thinning effects on total litter inputs remained clear following a 2-year elapse from thinning in P. densiflora stands and following a 7-year elapse from thinning in Q. variabilis stands.
This study was carried out to elucidate the desirable PEG molecular weight and it's blending methods which can promote the dimensional stabilization of Corpus controversa, Quercus variabilis and Prunus sargentii. The results may be summarized as follows: 1. PEG polymer loading in woods was affected by specific gravity of wood. And the PEG polymer loading was satisfactory except in Quercus variabilis, which shows the blending method of PEG V was proper. 2. Bulking coefficiency of PEG V was high in Corpus controversa and Prunus sargentii, and it is necessary to paint or coat water-proofing wood preservative: for high bulking coefficiency of Quercus variabilis. 3. In the treatment of PEG V, the antishrink efficiency of Prunus sargentii was 82.59% and that of Quercus variabilis 62.79%. 4. Dimensional stabilization of hardwoods did not have apparant relation with PEG blending method. 5. Judging from results, PEG-400 and PEG-1000 would be enough for dimensional stabilization of hardwood having high specific gravity if other factors are considered well.
This study was conducted to develop microsatellite markers in Quercus variabilis using next generation sequencing. A total of 305,771 reads (384 bp on average) were generated on a Roche GS-FLX system, yielding 117 Mbp of sequences. The de novo assembly resulted in 7,346 contigs. A total of 606 contigs (20.75%) including 911 microsatellite loci were derived from the 2,921 contigs longer than 500 bp. A total of 180 primer sets were designed from the 911 microsatellite loci and screened in eight Q. variabilis individual trees sampled from a natural stand to obtain polymorphic loci. As a result, a total of thirteen polymorphic microsatellite loci were selected and used for estimating population genetic parameters in the 54 individual trees. The mean number of effective alleles was 4.996 ranging from 2.439 to 7.515. The observed heterozygosity and the expected heterozygosity ranged between 0.731 and 1.000 with an average of 0.873 and from 0.590 to 0.867 with an average of 0.766, respectively. Null alleles were not detected in all loci. No significant linkage disequilibrium was detected after Bonferroni correction in all loci. In the near future, these novel polymorphic microsatellite markers will be used to study population and conservation genetics of Q. variabilis of Korea in more detail.
This study examined the vegetation structure in the ridge of the Hannamgeumbuk-Jeongmaek and Geumbuk-Jeongmaek by selecting 7 sites(2 sites at Hannamgeumbuk-Jeongmaek and 5 sites at Geumbuk-Jeongmaek) in consideration of the environmental conditions and artificial influences and conducting the vegetation survey in the selected sites. The community classification based on TWINSPAN categorized the vegetation at Hannamgeumbuk-Jeongmaek into 8 groups: Quercus variabilis-Q. acutissima community, Pinus densiflora-Q. mongolica community, Pinus densiflora community, P. densiflora-Q. mongolica-Q. variabilis community, P. densiflora-Deciduous oaks community, P. koraiensis community, Q. mongolica-Q. variabilis community, and Larix kaempferi-P. koraiensis community. It also categorized the vegetation at Geumbuk-Jeongmaek into 9 groups: Quercus variabilis community, Deciduous broad-leaved community, Q. mongolica community, Pinus densiflora-Q. mongolica-Q. variabilis community, Q. acutissima community, P. densiflora-Q. acutissima-Q. variabilis community, P. densiflora-Q. mongolica-P. rigida community, P. densiflora-P. thunbergii-Deciduous oaks community, and P. koraiensis community. Two species, Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora, which are widely distributed in the ridges of the Jeongmaeks and Baekdudaegan in South Korea, were dominant in many of the surveyed sites. The appearance of planted Castanea crenata in some plots, although not in high population, suggests human intervention in most regions of the Hannamgeumbuk-Jeongmaek and Geumbuk-Jeongmaek in the past. The Gayasan area, which is part of the Geumbuk-Jeongmaek and where the maritime climate and continental climate overlap, showed Pinus thunbergii, reflecting the local climate characteristics.
This study was conducted to compare the physical and chemical properties of soils in Quercus acutissima, Q. mongolica, Q. serrata, and Q. variabilis stands. A total of 423 plots (Q. acutissima 72 plots, Q. mongolica 150 plots, Q. serrata 97 plots, and Q. variabilis: 104 plots) were examined to determine the soil properties of A and B horizons throughout the country. The physical and chemical properties of soils were significantly different among the four different Quercus spp. stands. The sand content in both horizons was significantly higher in Q. acutissima stands than in the other three oak stands, whereas the clay content was lowest among the four stands. The soils in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands were more acidified than those in Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis stands. The concentrations of organic carbon and total nitrogen in both soil depths were significantly higher in Q. mongolica stands than in Q. serrata, Q. variabilis, and Q. acutissima stands. The content of available phosphorus was significantly higher in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands than in Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis stands; whereas the contents of exchangeable potassium, calcium, and magnesium were lower in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands than in Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis stands. The cation exchange capacity was highest in Q. mongolica stands, followed by that in Q. serrata, Q. variabilis, and Q. acutissima stands. These data indicate the need to design a nutrient management plan to enhance the low soil pH and exchangeable cation in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands.
The community structure and dynamic succession of forest were determinated on the quadrat plots selected randomly at the Mt. Bomun. The plot size was $20{\times}20m$, and analysis of vegetation and soil 'data we re adapted reciprocal averaging(RA) ordination method. 1. The numbers of tree species were twenty, and dominant species were Quercus variabilis, Pinus densiflora, Alnus hirsuta, and Pinus rigida. 2. The forest of Mt. Bomun was found to be composed of Pinus rigida community and Quercus-Pinus community through RA ordination method. 3. The community of Quercus variabilis was assumed to be dominant in the succession of forest. 4. The soil factors, such as total-N, $NO_3$, $NH_4^+$, $P_2O_5$, organic matter, C. E. C., pH, $K^+$, $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ and $Mg^{{+}{+}}$, were analyzed. Total-N, $NO_3^-$, $NH_4^+$, and $P_2O_5$ were assumed to be the main factors of the soil.

In order to compare the NVOC (Natural Volatile Organic Compound) emission rates from oak trees, the emission rates of isoprene were quantitatively measured in situ based on tree species and region. As a result, the emission rates from Quercus serrata T. were found to be 1000 times greate. than those from Quercus acutissima C. However, the emission rates at the Chili and Gumsung mountain sites did not show any significant differences in summer. Cuvette tests using four different oak species also supported that there was a tremendous difference in emission rates between Quercus serrata T. and Quercus acutissima C. It was found that the emission rates from the trees were highest on the order of Quercus serrata T., Quercus aliena B., Quercus acutissima C. and Quercus variabilis B.
