  • This study aims at finding out the correlation between sasang constitution diagnosis using QSCCII which is self reporting questionnaire and sasang constitution diagnosis using iridology. In this study, 131 adult male and female participated as testees. The survey on questionnaires of QSCCII were carried out and then photos of irises of the participants were taken. The data from QSCCII was computed in WIN QSCCII version and they were translated into sasang constitution. For iris photos, the iris specialized camera with 1,300,000 picture elements was used, and then the iris photos were also read by computer. The correlation rate between QSCCII sasang constitution and iris sasang constitution was 52.4%, where kappa coefficient shows 0.323, which gives meaningful result statistically. And thus, the result can be used as a reference in sasang constitution diagnosis. For iridology to be served as a tool for sasang constitution diagnosis, criteria need to be developed for more concrete iris sasang constitution diagnosis in the future. And also comparative research is required among sasang constitution professionals and its iridological correlation of Sasang constitution carried out on more various group of people.

  • 1. The purpose of study The problem lies in the Sasang-constitutional-medicine is a subjectiveness of diagnosis that can be varied by every donor. Questionnare for the Sasang Constitution Classification II(QSCCII) was invented to solve this problem. This study was conducted for two purpose. The one is re-value the QSCCII. The other is to make a basis to upgrade QSCCII. 2. The method of study QSCCII was administered to 537 patients at Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Hospital. Data was collected during 19 months from september 2000 to march 2002. For the purpose of this study, the collected data was analyzed by crosstabs, variation analysis and discrimination analysis. The analyzing program was SPSS 8.0 for Windows. And using this program I made the judgmental equation to re-value the QSCCII. 3. The result of study 1) not applied intensifying value The diagnostic discrimination abilities of the QSCCII is 61.5% about Taeyangin, 57.7% about Soyangin, 67.2% about Taeumin, 68.8% about Soemin. And its average is 65.0%. 2) applied intensifying value The diagnostic discrimination abilities of the QSCCII is 76.9% about Taeyangin, 59.9% about Soyangin, 68.9% about Taeumin, 71.2% about Soemin. And its average is 67.3%. 3) I propose a new diagnostic possibility with a different discriminant analysis and increase 42.3% of diagnostic discrimination ability considering 25% of accident diagnostic discrimination ability. 4) Development and complement of Taeyangin and Soyangin questions is needed to increase the accuracy of diagnosis.

  • Objectives We tried to examine the change in the test-retest response for the questionnaire itself regarding the QSCCII. Methods Tests were conducted twice times with an interval of 6 months between tests for test-retest reliability analysis. We examined the test-retest answer agreement rate (%) in all items of QSCCII . We conducted NcNemar analysis to examine test-retest reliability for 77 items selected from the QSCCII. Results The body shape-multiple-choice items showed a tendency of low test-retest agreement rate and most of the questions about when I was not well and when I felt my body condition improve showed an high test-retest agreement rate tendency in all items of QSCCII. As a result of the research on the selected 77 items, there was a significant change in the answer in item No.25, 58(in the item of Soeumin) item No.45, 103(in the item of Taeumin) and item No.87 (in the item of Soeumin) (Table.3, 4, 5, 6). Conclusion The QSCCII is shown as a questionnaire composed of mostly no significant response changes in test-retest in each item through this study. Some items were appropriately deleted in the process of developing the advanced model, but there are also items that should be considered further. It is thought that some items should be used after being refined in content and form.

  • We verified the reproducibility of constitution by IGM and the agreement rate between sasang constitution by QSCCII and constitution by IGM. We analyzed the results of 64 subject who were judged as identical sasang constitution by repeated QSCC II. First, we compared the two results of constitutions by IGM hat peformed by one O.M.D(Oriental Medicine Doctor) at an interval of one year. Second, we examined hypothesis established by one O.M.D, that is about relation of constitutions by IGM and QSCCII, such as I type-Taeeumin, II type-Soyangin and III type-Soeumin in constitutions. There were no statistical significances in reproducibility of constitution by IGM. Although there was a tendency of relevance of sasang constitution by QSCC II with constitution by IGM, there was no statistical significance. Hypothesis that is established by clinical experiences must be verified by an effective statistical method. And there is a necessity to complement the method including mechanical measurements about constitution classification which are performed by a diagnosis relying on individual intuition.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate and standardize the four scales of Questionnaire for the Sasang Constitution ClassificationII (QSCCII). QSCCII is newly prepared by statistical item analysis and is designed to examine its diagnostic discriminability. QSCCII is administered to 1366 random informants. From the survey, we could get the data for the standardization. The criteria of standardization are based on the data from 265 informants who are examined by professionals. Collected data are analyzed by internal consistency, variation analysis(ANOVA), Duncan test and discrimination analysis of SPSS PC+ V4.0 program. The results are as follows 1) The reliability of four scales for QSCCII is relatively valid. The internal consistency of Tae-yang(太陽) scale is Cronbach's ${\alpha}=0.5708$. That of So-yang(少陽) scale is ${\alpha}=0.5708$. That of Tae-eum(太陰) scale is ${\alpha}=0.5922$. That of So-eum(少陰) scale is ${\alpha}=0.6319$. 2) There is a significant difference between each group through variation analysis of four scales. 3) The process of standardization is based on the average value and standard deviation with respect to age and sex difference of each criteria. 4) This study suggests a source of standardization of Sasang Constitution Classification by providing norms in which the differences of age, sex, and number of items are taken into deep consideration. QSCCII, therefore, can be applied to every age(the 10's to the 60's) and sex groups. 5) The recalculation of the raw-score to standard value (T-score) shows that the diagnostic discriminability (Hit-ratio : 70.08%) of QSCCII brings about 37% improvement than proportional chance criteria(33.33%). Especially, Hit-ratios of Tae-eum In(74.5%) and So-eum In(70.8%) are higher than that of So-yang In(60.0%). 6) QSCC has discriminability only to male informants. Compared with QSCC, however, QSCCII has relatively efficient discriminability both to male and female informants. 7) These results would be a demonstration of the fact that the QSCCII could be used as a tool for sasang constitution classification.

  • In spite of recent remarkable recent development in both western and oriental medical sciences, there is still only a shallow understanding of individual differences for various prognoses of incurable diseases and immunopathy diseases. Nevertheless, the care, cure and prevention methods of Sasang Constitutional Medicine are broadly used as an effective treatment of incurable diseases like immunopathy diseases and stress-related diseases and diseases due to aging. In this sense, the establishment of classification norms is urgent and essential for the worldwide application of Sasang Constitutional Medicine(SCM). This study began with the confirmation process of whether Sasang Constitutional types exist in Americans. To accomodate for cultural differences, the distinguishing tool was readjusted so that Sasang Constitutional Types in Americans could be determined. Hence, the selected tool is the new QSCCII+, which is a newly revised English version of the QSCCII. QSCCII was made and standardized by Dept. of SCM in Kyung Hee Medical Center and Dr. Kim7). The evaluation methods of the old version were improved in the new QSCCII+ through necessary statistical manipulation. The original QSCCII was officially authorized by the Korean Society of Sasang Constitutional Medicine as the only computerized version of Sasang diagnostics. This study is the first attempt to design a new diagnostic tool for the classification of Sasang Constitutional types in North Americans with the revision of QSCCII. The subjects of this study were selected from the cooperative people among the students and staffs of the University of Bridgeport and the patients who visited the Clinic in the Health Science Center. This study takes for about 1 year from 1998. 8 to 1999. 8 The conclusions of the study can be summarized as follows: 1. Sasang constitutional types also exist in Americans. It can also naturally be inferred that Sasang Constitutional types exist in all human beings, for there are many different human races in America. 2. There are more So-Yang In's than any other types in American white people. This result confirms the hypothesis that there also exist Sasang Constitutional types in westerners. 3. The result of repetitive tests suggests that the new QSCCII+ is an effective diagnostic tool for westerners when we consider the constant diagnostic results of the QSCCII+. 4. Sasang Constitutional types exit in the sample group regardless of racial difference. 5. The question items that were not often checked by Americans need to be modified into more understandable expressions. 6. The standardization of diagnosis for Americans should be established by use of the QSCCII+ 7. It can be guessed that there are many Tae-yang In's among the 71 persons who could not be clearly classified by the QSCCII+. Due to the scarcity of Tae-yang-In in general, it is important to improve upon the discernability of the QSCC II+. 8. The results of the Sasang Constitutional distribution in North Americans are as follows: The percentage of So-yang In distribution in the sample group is 36.25%(87persons), that of Tae-eum In is 13.75%(33persons), and that of So-eum In is 20.41%(49persons).

  • 1. Background and Purpose : Sasang Constitutional medicine is baon dividing individuals' constitutions into four categories. Determination of an individual's constitution, however, can be different according to who he or she consults with since it depends solely on the examiner's own perception and methods. Currently, the use of self-reporting questionnaires is accepted as a general approach in clinical settings, but the results of different questionnaires tend to be inconsistent. In this study, we investigated how different the results of the questionnaires are and what the inter-questionnaires agreement is. 2. Method : 1595 peoples who volunteered our research from 1997 to 1999 and were evaluated disease free were asked to mark out three questionnaires: Sasang Pattern Identification Questionnaire, QSCC I and QSCCII(QSCC I was completed by 348 patients only). 3. Results and Conclusions : Three questionnaires above produced different results as excepted. In Sasang Pattern Identification Questionnaire, the Soeumin accounted for 55.9%. With the modified version of Sasang Pattern Identification Questionnaire, the Taeumin was the majoriy(39.1 %) and, QSCCII also showed similar results(34.8% of Taeumin). In contrast, the QSCC I revealed the majority consisted of the Soyangin (59.1 %). In terms of analysis on inter-questionnaire agreement, Sasang Pattern Identification Questionnaire and its modified version showed the highest agreement of 66.3, followed by 55.6% of QSCCII and the modified version from Sasang Pattern Identification Questionnaire. Therefore, we concluded that the ideal choice to determine an individual's constitution, as far as questionnaires go, is to take results from both the modified version from Sasang Pattern Identification Questionnaire and QSCCII. We found the use of QSCC I can be confusing to reach a satisfactory agreement.
