  • It is well-known that there exists a constant-weight $[s{\theta}_{k-1},k,sq^{k-1}]_q$ code for any positive integer s, which is an s-fold simplex code, where ${\theta}_j=(q^{j+1}-1)/(q-1)$. This gives an upper bound $n_q(k,sq^{k-1}+d){\leq}s{\theta}_{k-1}+n_q(k,d)$ for any positive integer d, where $n_q(k,d)$ is the minimum length n for which an $[n,k,d]_q$ code exists. We construct a two-weight $[s{\theta}_{k-1}+1,k,sq^{k-1}]_q$ code for $1{\leq}s{\leq}k-3$, which gives a better upper bound $n_q(k,sq^{k-1}+d){\leq}s{\theta}_{k-1}+1+n_q(k-1,d)$ for $1{\leq}d{\leq}q^s$. As another application, we prove that $n_q(5,d)={\sum_{i=0}^{4}}{\lceil}d/q^i{\rceil}$ for $q^4+1{\leq}d{\leq}q^4+q$ for any prime power q.

  • For $q^5-q^3-q^2-q+1{\leq}d{\leq}q^5-q^3-q^2$, we prove the non-existence of a $[g_q(6,d),6,d]_q$ code and we give a $[g_q(6,d)+1,6,d]_q$ code by constructing appropriate 0-cycle in the projective space, where $g_q (k,d)={{\sum}^{k-1}_{i=0}}{\lceil}\frac{d}{q^i}{\rceil}$. Consequently, we have the minimum length $n_q(6,d)=g_q(6,d)+1\;for\;q^5-q^3-q^2-q+1{\leq}d{\leq}q^5-q^3-q^2\;and\;q{\geq}3$.

  • Background: Although identifying cases in large administrative databases may aid future research studies, previous reports demonstrated that the use of the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) code alone for diagnosis leads to disease misclassification. Purpose: We aimed to assess the value of the ICD-10 diagnostic code for identifying potential children with biliary atresia. Methods: Patients aged <18 years assigned the ICD-10 code of biliary atresia (Q44.2) between January 1996 and December 2016 at a quaternary care teaching hospital were identified. We also reviewed patients with other diagnoses of code-defined cirrhosis to identify more potential cases of biliary atresia. A proposed diagnostic algorithm was used to define ICD-10 code accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Results: We reviewed the medical records of 155 patients with ICD-10 code Q44.2 and 69 patients with other codes for biliary cirrhosis (K74.4, K74.5, K74.6). The accuracy for identifying definite/probable/possible biliary atresia cases was 80%, while the sensitivity was 88% (95% confidence interval [CI], 82%-93%). Three independent predictors were associated with algorithm-defined definite/probable/possible cases of biliary atresia: ICD-10 code Q44.2 (odds ratio [OR], 2.90; 95% CI, 1.09-7.71), history of pale stool (OR, 2.78; 95% CI, 1.18-6.60), and a presumed diagnosis of biliary atresia prior to referral to our hospital (OR, 17.49; 95% CI, 7.01-43.64). A significant interaction was noted between ICD-10 code Q44.2 and a history of pale stool (P<0.05). The area under the curve was 0.87 (95% CI, 0.84-0.89). Conclusion: ICD-10 code Q44.2 has an acceptable value for diagnosing biliary atresia. Incorporating clinical data improves the case identification. The use of this proposed diagnostic algorithm to examine data from administrative databases may facilitate appropriate health care allocation and aid future research investigations.

  • By calculating the spectral efficiency of symmetric balance incomplete block design(BIBD) codes satisfying BER=$10^{-9}$, it can be found that ideal BIBD code design with m=2 and various q's is effective when effective power is high($P_{sr}=-10$ dBm). But BIBD code design with q > 2 and various m's can be effective when effective power is low($P_{sr}=-25$ dBm).

  • In this paper, we consider the construction of cyclic and quasi-cyclic structured q-ary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over a designated small field. The construction is performed with a pre-defined sliding-window, which actually executes the regular mapping from original field to the targeted field under certain parameters. Compared to the original codes, the new constructed codes can provide better flexibility in choice of code rate, code length and size of field. The constructed codes over small fields with code length from tenths to hundreds perform well with q-ary sum-product decoding algorithm (QSPA) over the additive white Gaussian noise channel and are comparable to the improved spherepacking bound. These codes may found applications in wireless sensor networks (WSN), where the delay and energy are extremely constrained.

  • For systems with coexisting cellular and hot-spot cells in broadband orhogonal frequency and code division multiplexing (OFCDM) systems, a suitable cell search algorithm is proposed fur the common pilot channel (CPICH) in the forward link using separated I/Q channel cell specific codes(CSSC), in which the cellular cell specific scrambling code (CCSSC) is assigned to the in-phase (Q) pilot channel of all cellular cells, and the exclusive hot-spot cell specific scrambling code (HSCSSC) group is assigned to the quadrature (Q) pilot channel of all hot-spot cells. Therefore, the proposed algorithm enables a mobile station (MS) to search quickly for the most desirable hot-spot cell due to reducing the effect of CCSSC, when a MS wants to use a mobile internet. The computer simulation results show that the proposed cell search algorithm can achieve faster cell search time performance, compared to conventional cell search methods.

  • A multi-code biorthogonal code keying(MBCK) system consists of multiple waveform coding block, and the sum of output codewords is transmitted. Drawback of MBCK is that it requires amplifier with high linearity because its output symbol is multi-level. MBCK with constant amplitude preceding blcok(CA-MBCK) has been proposed, which guarantees sum of orthogonal codes to have constant amplitude. Redundant bits of CA-MBCK for constant amplitude coding are not only used to make constant amplitude signal but also used to improve the bit error rate(BER) performance at receiver. In this paper, we proposed a transmission scheme which combine CA-MBCK with $Q^{2}PSK$ to improve bandwidth efficiency of CA-MBCK. The BER performance of the scheme is same that of CA-MBCK in additive white gaussian noise(AWGN). And we showed that BER performance of the proposed system can be improved using redundant bits of constant amplitude preceding.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the Q-ray view, a novel optical device on reliability of assessing a tooth status by dental hygiene students in the training for dental hygiene process. Twenty patients were enrolled in this study. Oral examinations were conducted by both seventeen third-year dental hygiene students and a trained faculty member. Traditional visual inspection was performed in phase I and then re-examined with Q-ray view in phase II. Restoration codes and lesion codes for each tooth were recorded separately according to the predefined criteria. As a measure of reliability, percent agreement and Cohen's kappa were determined. Agreements for each intraoral regions and types of lesion and restoration were calculated. Paired t-test and Pearson chi-square test for two proportions were used to compare mean Cohen's kappa and percent agreement at each phase. For the lesion code, mean kappa values of phase II for intraoral regions were significantly greater than that of phase I (p=0.017). For the both of the lesion code and restoration code, percent agreements of phase II for each types of lesion and restoration were significantly greater than that of phase II (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). Especially difference of percent agreements between phase I and II for incipient caries, caries and fracture were significant for the lesion code (p=0.046, p<0.001, and p=0.029, respectively) and for not restored or sealed, tooth-colored restoration were significant for the restoration code (p<0.001 and p=0.011, respectively). The reliability of assessing a tooth status was improved when the Q-ray view used in dental hygiene student with beginner level of expertise. Q-ray view can be a promising device for conducting and educating the dental hygiene process better.
