  • 30kW electrical power conversion system is delveloped for the variable speed wind turbine system. In the wind energy conversion system(WECS) a synchronous generator with field current excitation converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. As the voltage and frequency of generator output vary according to the wind speed, a dc/dc boosting chopper is utilized to maintain constant dc link voltage. Grid connection type PWM inverter supply currents into the utility line by regulating the dc link voltage. The active power is controlled by q-axis current which the reactive power can be controlled by d-axis current reference change. The phase angle of utility voltage is detected using s/w PLL(Phased Locked Loop) in d-q synchronous reference frame. This scheme gives a low cost power solution for variable speed WECS.

  • In recent years, multifractal-based analysis methods have been widely applied in engineering. Among these methods, multifractal detrended cross-correlation analysis (MFDXA), a branch of fractal analysis, has been successfully applied in the fields of finance and biomedicine. For its great potential in reflecting the subtle characteristic among signals, a structural health monitoring (SHM) system based on MFDXA is proposed. In this system, damage assessment is conducted by exploiting the concept of multifractal theory to quantify the complexity of the vibration signal measured from a structure. According to the proposed algorithm, the damage condition is first distinguished by multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis. Subsequently, the relationship between the q-order, q-order detrended covariance, and length of segment is further explored. The dissimilarity between damaged and undamaged cases is visualized on contour diagrams, and the damage location can thus be detected using signals measured from different floors. Moreover, a damage index is proposed to efficiently enhance the SHM process. A seven-story benchmark structure, located at the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), was employed for an experimental verification to demonstrate the performance of the proposed SHM algorithm. According to the results, the damage condition and orientation could be correctly identified using the MFDXA algorithm and the proposed damage index. Since only the ambient vibration signal is required along with a set of initial reference measurements, the proposed SHM system can provide a lower cost, efficient, and reliable monitoring process.

  • In tunnel design, geotechnical survey of over 200m tunnel depth is required because of its characteristical topography. For this reason, there are difficulties in collecting information of basic data in tunnel design because of large-scale costs in borehole tests, of limits to a geotechnical analysis by the existing refraction seismic survey and of analytical errors in steep mountainous area. Seismic tomography has many advantages as follows; 1) seismic velocity as absolute value is more reliable than electrical resistivity, 2) geotechnical analysis in deep tunnel depth is available by seismic velocity, 3) analytical errors is reduced in steep mountainous area. In this paper, it was found out a correlation of seismic velocity and Q in tunnel design in the neighborhood of the National Capital region and the reduction effect of tunnel construction cost using reliable rock quality by seismic tomography compared with by borehole data and electricity resistivity data.

  • For mechanical load testing of wind turbines, capture matrix is constructed for various range of wind speeds according to the international standard IEC 61400-13. The conventional method wastes considerable amount of data by its invalid data policy -segment data into 10 minutes then remove invalid ones. Previously, we have suggested an alternative way to save the total amount of data to build a capture matrix, but the efficient selection of data has been still under question. The paper introduces optimization algorithms to construct capture matrix with less data. Heuristic algorithm (simple stacking and lowest frequency first), population method (particle swarm optimization) and Q-Learning accompanied with epsilon-greedy exploration are compared. All algorithms show better performance than the conventional way, where the distribution of enhancement was quite diverse. Among the algorithms, the best performance was achieved by heuristic method (lowest frequency first), and similarly by particle swarm optimization: Approximately 28% of data reduction in average and more than 40% in maximum. On the other hand, unexpectedly, the worst performance was achieved by Q-Learning, which was a promising candidate at the beginning. This study is helpful for not only wind turbine evaluation particularly the viewpoint of cost, but also understanding nature of wind speed data.

  • Various schemes for mobility support are currently proposed in NGN. However the performance comparison of all existing schemes is not relatively examined as yet. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the location registration and handover procedure of MIPv6, IP2, Q.MMF, IMS, compare and analyze the location registration time and cost and handover latency time using various performance parameters and simulation for the performance analysis. As a result of analysis, when Location Manager locates in the center of core network, IP2 showed better performance than other schemes.

  • During the past two decades, Metal Injection Molding(MIM) has become a very competitive technology to fabricate small, precise and complex-shaped parts in large quantities. In this research, the applicability of MIM technology in the mass-production of the high precision fuze parts to save manufacturing cost was investigated. The water-atomized 17-4PH stainless steel powder, one of the best corrosion-resistant high strength materials, was injection-molded into real-shape fuze part and flat tensile specimens. The injection-molded parts were thermally debound in hydrogen gas flow without solvent extraction. Sintering of the debound parts was carried out in vacuum at temperatures ranging from $1150^{\circ}C$ to $1370^{\circ}C$. The sintering behavior, mechanical properties, dimensional precision, corrosion resistance of the MIMed 17-4PH stainless parts were investigated. It was found that almost all the properties of the MIMed parts were comparable to those of the mechanically machined parts. Also, actual military field tests using both MIMed and mechanically machined fuze parts were performed as well and were found to be very successful.

  • In this paper, fully embedded 2.4GHz WLAN band pass filter (BPF) was investigated into a multi-layered organic packaging substrate using high Q spiral stacked inductors and high Dk MIM capacitors for low cost RF System on Package (SOP) applications. The proposed 2.4GHz WLAN BPF was designed by modifying chebyshev second order filter circuit topology. It was comprised of two parallel LC resonators for obtaining two transmission zeros. It was designed by using 2D circuit and 3D EM simulators for finding out optimal geometries and verifying their applicability. It exhibited an insertion loss of max -1.7dB and return loss of min -l7dB. The two transmission zeros were observed at 1.85 and 6.7GHz, respectively. In the low frequency band of $1.8GHz{\sim}1.9GHz$, the stop band suppression of min -23dB was achieved. In the high frequency band of $4.1GHz{\sim}5.4GHz$, the stop band suppression of min -l8dB was obtained. It was the first embedded and the smallest one of the filters formed into the organic packaging substrate. It has a size of $2.2{\times}1.8{\times}0.77mm^3$.

  • We present the experimental results of high quality factor (Q) inductors fabricated on high-resistivity silicon wafer using standard CMOS process without any modificatons such as thick gold layer or multilayer interconnection. This demonstrates the possibility of building high Q inductors using lower cost technologies, compared with previous results using complicated process. The comparative analysis is carried out to find the optimized inductor shape for the maximum performance by varying the thickness of metal and number of turns with rectangular shape.

  • We provide one of the first investigation on the impact of the degree of total leverage to the dividend policy of bank. We use a large sample of US bank holding companies from 2000:Q1 to 2017:Q4 to shed light our research question. Our empirical analysis provides consistent evidence that banks with high degree of total leverage (i.e. banks with a relatively high fixed-to-variables costs) are less likely to pay dividends, and they spend a lower fraction of incomes to pay back shareholders, suggesting a higher conservatism in dividend policy of banks subject to high degree of total leverage. The evidence remains unchanged with alternative econometric approaches, alternative measures of dividend policy and degree of total leverage. We further document that this higher conservatism is strengthened for a sample of banks with low franchise value during the financial crises. Our result suggests that the conservatism in dividend policy of banks with high degree of total leverage seems to be related to the precautionary motives aimed at preserving corporate resources under financial distress. Our study contributes to the literature of cost structure and dividend policy by pointing out that the impacts of the degree of fixed-to-variable expenses to dividend policy are extended to the case of banks.
