  • Objectives : To evaluate the extraction efficiency of water decoction with or without non-woven fabric underlying comparison of the HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) profiles of the hesperidin which is the standard of Citri Pericarpium. Methods : Pyungwisan, which is comprised of Atractylodis Rhizoma, Magnoliae Cortex, Citri Pericarpium, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Zingiberis Rhizoma, and Ziziphy Fructus, was extracted in boiling water with non-woven fabric or without non-woven fabric. Then hesperidin content was analyzed by HPLC. Results : The contents of hesperidin in the water extract of Pyungwisan which was decocted without non-woven fabric showed $219.57{\pm}2.51\;mg/g$ and $138.90{\pm}6.32\;mg/g$ in with non-woven fabric decoction. Conclusions : These results suggest that herbal decoction without non-woven fabric might increase extraction efficiency.

  • Background & Objective : The herbal medicine Sojukgunbihwan granule has been used for the treatment of functional dyspepsia, generally categorized as a gastric dysmotility disease. However, its mechanisms are not yet well known. Therefore, the effects of Sojukgunbihwan granules on gastric motility in rats was investigated. Methods : The myoelectrical activity of the gastric smooth muscle was recorded by a bipolar electrode placed at the gastric antrum of rats. The contractile waves were measured for 30 minutes before and after intragastric administration of each solution(normal saline, Pyungwisan 40mg/kg, Sojukgunbihwan granules 60mg/kg) and expressed as the motility index. Gastric emptying was measured by the number of glass beads expelled from the stomach(containing one hundred 1mm glass beads) within an hour after glass beads and test drugs(normal saline, Pyungwisan 40mg/kg, Pyungwisan 120mg/kg, Sojukgunbihwan granules 60mg/kg, Sojukgunbihwan granules 180mg/kg) were administered. In another series of experiments to evaluate the mechanisms of Sojukgunbihwan granules under delayed conditions, the rats were treated with atropine sulfate(1 mg/kg, s.c.), cisplatin(10mg/kg, i.p.), and NAME($N^G$-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, 75mg/kg, s.c.) respectively. Results : Intragastric administration of Sojukgunbihwan granules increased the myoelectrical activity significantly, gastric motility index rose 25%, and gastric emptying of glass beads was significantly enhanced over a period of 60minutes. Under the delayed gastric emptying induced by atropine sulfate, cisplatin, and NAME, Sojukgunbihwan granules aggravated gastric emptying in the atropine sulfate($5.71{\pm}3.45\;vs\;3.71{\pm}4.42$) and cisplatin($13.86{\pm}3.53\;vs\;5.14{\pm}5.05$, p<0.01) treated groups, but enhanced gastric emptying in the NAME treated group($5.00{\pm}3.21\;vs\;11.71{\pm}5.65$, p<0.05). Conclusions : Results suggest that Sojukgunbihwan granules stimulate gastric motility through cholinergic and 5-hydroxytryptamine 3 receptors. Results are indicative of Sojukgunbihwan as an especially effective remedy in dysmotility-like functional dyspepsia with impaired reservoir functions such as gastric adaptive relaxation.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to determine clinical efficacy of herbal medicine by evaluating SCORAD Index and total level of ceramaides in the skin of 13 children with atopic dermatitis Methods : Subjects are divided into two groups : Group 1(non-differentiation children treated with Saenghyeoryunbueom) and group 2(differentiation children treated with either pyungwisan, onchungum or gamitongsungsan). We determine SCORAD Index and total level of ceramaides in the skin of 13 children with atopic dermatitis before and after taking each of herbal treatment for 12 weeks. Results : After herbal prescription for 12 weeks, A SCORAD index of both group 1 and group 2 was decreased. However, the total level of ceramides in group 1 and group 2 was not altered after 12 weeks. When the correlation between the alteration of SCORAD index and ceramides levels was determined, the SCORAD index in group 1 was inversely correlated with the total level of ceramides(r=-0.994, p=0.006) In contrast, the alteration of SCORAD index in group 2 was not correlated with ceramide levels. Conclusions : The clinical efficacy of Saenghyeoryunbueom for non-differentiation children with atopic dermatitis is paralleled with the increased level of ceramides in skin. The clinical efficacy of pyungwisan, onchungum or gamitongsungsan for differentiation children with atopic dermatitis is not correlated with ceramide level in skin.

  • A general review is made on Insamyangwitang(人蔘養胃湯). Following conclusions are drawn from the clinical cases of Insamyangwitang in Hyungsang medicine. 1. Insamyangwitang is composed of four different prescriptions of Huisaentang, Sakoonjatang, Eajintang and Pyungwisan. Huisaentang is usually prescribed for the intestinal convulsion. Sakoonjatang for the deficiency of Ki. Eajintang for retention of phlegm. 2. Insamyangwitang is effective in strengthening the spleen, drying the dampness, warning the middle-warmer to stop vomiting, regulating the flow of Ki, and eliminating phlegm. 3. Insamyangwitang is applicable to malaria caused by cold, intestinal convulsion, abdominal mass, edema, tympanites, Yin syndrome of exogenous febrile disease, distension, lack of appetite, stomachache, and diarrhea. 4. Persons with the following characteristic in Hyungsang are more susceptible to Insamyangwitang : Jung type, Hyul type, fish type, Taium meridian type, white fat damp constitution, person with big mouth, and woman rather than man.
