  • Carbon nanofiber electrode has been fabricated for energy storage systems by the electrospinning of SU-8 precursor and subsequent pyrolysis. Various parameters including the applied voltage, the distance between syringe tip and target collector and the flow rate of the polymer affect the diameter of SU-8 electrospun nanofibers. Shrinkage during pyrolysis decreases the fiber diameter. As the pyrolysis temperature increases, the resistivity decreases dramatically. Low resistivity is one of the important characteristics of the electrodes of an energy storage device. Given the advantages of carbon nanofibers having high external surface area, electrical conductivity, and lithium intercalation ability, SU-8 derived carbon nanofibers were applied to the anode of a full lithium ion cell. In this paper, we studied the physical properties of carbon fiber electrode by scanning transmission microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and four-point probe. The electrochemical characteristics of the electrode were investigated by cyclic voltammogram and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy plots.

  • The effects of silica-alumina type catalysts addition on the thermal decomposition of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) resin have been studied in a thermal analyzer (TGA, DSC) and a small batch reactor. The silica-alumina type compounds tested were kaolinite, bentonite, perlite, activated clay and clay. As the results of TGA experiments, pyrolysis starting temperature for EVA resin had the 1st pyrolysis temperature range of 300~$400^{\circ}C$ and the 2nd pyrolysis temperature range of 425~$525^{\circ}C$. The silica-alumina type catalysts did not affect the pyrolysis rate in EVA pyrolysis reaction. In the DSC experiments, addition of kaolinite and bentonite catalysts reduced the heat of fusion and heat of 2nd pyrolysis reaction. In the batch system experiments, the mixing of silica-alumina type catalysts enhanced the yield of fuel oil, and affected to the distribution of carbon numbers. In the silica-alumina type inorganic material used in this experiments, bentonite was the most effective from the pyrolysis heat, yields, and the characteristics of fuel oil.

  • To investigate the synergy effect on the pyrolysis of mixture of polyethylene(PE) and polystyrene(PS), the pyrolysis of PE, PS and the mixture of PE-PS was carried out in a batch reactor at the atmospheric pressure and $450^{\circ}C$. The pyrolysis time was from 20 to 80 mins. The liquid products formed during pyrolysis were classified into gas, gasoline, kerosene, gas oil and heavy oil according to the distillation temperatures based on the petroleum product quality standard of Korea Institute of Petroleum Quality. The analysis of the product oils by GC/MS showed that the new components produced by mixing were not detected. The synergy effect according to mixing of PE and PS did not also appear. The conversion and yield of mixtures were in proportion to the mixing ratio of sample.

  • Silica powders with spherical shape and narrow size distribution were prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis applying the droplet classification apparatus. On the other hand, silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis without droplet classification apparatus had broad size distribution. Droplet classification apparatus used in this paper applied the principles of cyclone and dispersion plate with small holes. The droplets formed from the ultrasonic spray generator applying the droplet classification apparatus had narrow size distribution. The droplets with fine and large sizes were eliminated by droplet classification apparatus. The optimum flow rate of the carrier gas and diameter of the hole of the dispersion plate were studied to reduce the size distribution of the silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The size distribution of the silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis at the optimum preparation conditions was 0.76.

  • Forest fires in Korea, having forest coverage of 70%, have kept increasing in number and scale since the middle of 1990's. Although deposited fallen leaves in forests such as herbaceous plants, conifers, and broadleaf trees are used as a medium for forest fires, the pyrolysis and combustion characteristics of the various species of trees are hardly studied. Oriental oak is the representative broadleaf tree in domestic forests, and pyrolysis and combustion of oriental oak leaf were carried out by thermogravimetic analysis (TGA). The leaf of oriental oak was ignited at $239^{\circ}C$ whereas pyrolysis started at $250^{\circ}C$. The corresponding kinetic parameters including activation energy and pre-exponential factor were determined by differential method over the degree of conversions. The values of activation energies for pyrolysis were increased as the conversion increases from 10% to 80%, whereas those of values were decreased during combustion.

  • The characteristics of the bio-oil produced by the pyrolysis process with pig feces was investigated in this paper. The continuous auger-type reactor produced bio-oil was maintained at the temperature range of 400 to $600^{\circ}C$, which was higher than a typical that in a conventional pyrolysis system. The pig feces was used as the feedstock. The bio-oil and its compositions were characterized by water analysis, heating values, elemental analysis, bio-oil compounds, by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), and functional group by $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the maximum bio-oil yields of 21% w.t. was achieved at $550^{\circ}C$. This result suggested that this auger reactor might be a potential technology for livestock waste treatment to produce bio-oil because it is able to be improved to reach higher efficiency of bio-oil production in further study. The pyrolysis system reported herein had low heat transfer into the feedstock in the auger reactor so that it needs improve the heat conduction rate of the system in further study.

  • Combustion characteristics of synthetic gas from flame pyrolysis gasification of polymetric wastes are reported and the applicability of synthetic gas from flame pyrolysis gasification to a gas engine system is presented. Engine power is easily predicted by the volume percentage of the synthetic gas. Measurements have been made to obtain the range of flame existence in the function of volume percentage of CO and $H_2$ gases in the synthetic gas. In order to clarify the emission of the flames, NOx measurements by chemiluminescent analyser are taken in flames with different equivalent ratios. From the results of the engine performance data we also have demonstrated that the output of the gas engine modified from a LPG engine is about 5 ps at normal rating. We conclude that synthetic gas from flame pyrolysis gasification of polymetric wastes is applicable to a gas engine system.
