  • Herbicidal activities of newly synthesized experimental compound, KSC-13906 [Erythro N-{(4,6-dimethoxy pyrimidin-2-yl)aminocarbgnyl}-2-(2-fluoro-1- hydroxy-n-propyl)benzenesulfonamide, US Patent 5,461,025], were investigated in greenhouse and field for development as a paddy herbicide. KSC-13906 exihibited excellent weeding effects and selectivity to rice under submerged paddy condition in geenhouse. At the application rate of $2.5{\sim}5$ g ai/ha treated on surface of water, KSC-13906 effectively controlled three annual weeds such as Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola. Scirpus juncoides, and Monochoria vaginalis as well as five perennial weeds such as Cyperus serotinus, Sagittaria pygmaea, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Potamogeton distinctus, and S. trifolia. However, there was no effect on Aneilema keisak and Lindernia procumbens. Especially, KSC-13906 effectively controlled Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola at growth stages ranging from pre-emergence to 3-leaf stage. Antagonistic interaction was found between pyrazosulfuron-ethyl and mefenacet, but not between KSC-13906 ana mefenacet. KSC-13906 had high selectivity to transplanted rice, but caused phytotoxic effect on direct-seeded rice when treated before 3-leaf stage. Herbicidal activity of KSC-13906 on the Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola was 7-folds greater than that of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl in terms of relative dose ratio of the herbicides. These results suggest that KSC-13906 possesses selective herbicidal potency in rice.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the phytotoxicity of several herbicides for rice and weed control with herbicides application times and seeding times in flooded direct-seeded rice field. The phytotoxicity of herbieides(bensulfuron methyl+dimepiperate, bensulfuron methyl+mefenacet+dymron, bensulfuron methyl+quinclorac, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+molinate, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+thiobencarb, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+cyhalofop, imazosulfuron+molinate, imazosul-furon+cyhalofop) for rice in different seeding dates was the most high at 7 days after seeding(DAS) Followed by 12 and 17 DAS. In particular, the bensulfuron methyl+mefenacet+dymron showed very high phytotoxicity to rice plants. Weed species occurred in direct-seeding field seeded on May 1 were 10 species (grasses ; 1, broad-leaves ; 6, sedges ; 3) and Echinochloa crus-galli was the most dominant weed among them. Whereas weed species occurred rice field seeded on May 22 were 7 species(grasses ; 1, broad-leaves : 3, ridges ; 3) and Echirochloa crus-galli was the most dominant weed among them. The weed control for annual weeds(Echinochloa crus-galli, Aneilema keisak, and so on) and perennial weeds(Cyperus serotinus, Scipurus juncoides) was remarkably effective at the application of 7 and 12 DAS, but it of Eleocharis kuroguwai was effective at the application of 17 DAS on two seeding times. The yields were decreased significantly at the plot affected severely by herbicides applied at 7 DAS and the plots showed low efficacy at herbicides application of 17 DAS.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the herbicidal efficacy of carfentrazone-ethyl mixtures in direct-seeding flooded rice. The efficacy of three different carfentrazone-ethly mixtures was greater than pyrazosulfuron-ethyl pyriminobac-methyl GR (PP GR). Weeding efficacy of three different carfentrazone-ethly mixtures was more than 96.9%. No phytotoxic effect was observed in the rice based on the plant height and the number of tillers. Yield of rice un three different carfentrazone-ethly mixtures application was more than both in the PP GR and in the hand weeding. Based on these data, three different carfentrazone-ethly mixtures can be applied to provide an effective weed management in direct-seeding flooded rice.

  • A novel quinolineoxadiazoles, substituted the carboxylic acid group with 1,2,4-oxadiazole radicle, of KSC-16960 and related compounds were evaluated to examine the herbicidal activity, crop injury and residual effect of after-vegetable crops compared with those of quinclorac (3,7-dichloro-8-quinolinecarboxylic acid), of which use is now banned because of its residual activity to some succeeding vegetable crops. KSC-16960 showed 2- and 3-leaf stages of barnyardgrasses effectively controlled by more than 95 and 90%, respectively, at a rate of 6.25 g/ha. The dose of KSC-16960 controlled 4- and 5-leaf stages of barnyardgrasses by more than 90% were found to be 50 g and 100 g/ha, respectively. The selectivity of KSC-16960 between direct-seeded rice and barnyardgrass was approximately 2-fold higher than that of quinclorac when they were treated to the soil. The selectivity indices of KSC-16960 and of quinclorac between 1-leaf stage of direct seeded rice and 5-leaf stage of barnyardgrass were 44 and 23, respectively, and those between 1-leaf stage of direct seeded rice and 4-leaf stage of barnyardgrass were almost 2-fold higher. Application of KSC-16960 with bentazone exhibited an additive controlling effect on several weed species, but that of quinclorac exhibited an antagonistic effect. With pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, on the other hand, both application of KSC-16960 and quinclorac showed additive interactions. Under a greenhouse condition, the residual activity of KSC-16960 to succeeding tomato plants was approximately 4-fold lower compared to that of quinclorac. KSC-16960 could be substituted for quinclorac, if it will be made some more improvement for reducing residual activity.

  • Studies were carried out to provide basic information for establishing the weed control in Chungbuk, Korea. The present surveys targeting 260 farmers in Chungbuk province were conducted for the cultivation system, weeds occurrence and usage of herbicides. To estimate the occurring area of herbicide resistant weeds, soil samples from 400 paddy fields were collected twice on August, 2011 and April, 2012. In the results of survey, the 99.6% of farmers used the rice planting machine and the 78% of the farmers disseminated herbicides twice to control weeds before and after planting rice. The most commonly used herbicide were as follows; soil-applied herbicide : butachlor 46.6%, mid-term herbicide : mefenacet + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl 10.7%, foliar herbicides : bentazone 62%. The dominant paddy field weeds included Echinochloa crusgalli (16.2%), Scirpus juncoides (12.2%), Monochoria vaginalis (11.9%) and Sagittaria trifolia (9.5%). Occurrence area of sulfonylurea herbicide resistant weeds was 13,659 ha in 26.8% of the paddy area. Monochoria vaginalis showed the highest with 4,605 ha (36.4%) followed Scirpus juncoides (30.7%), and Lindernia dubia (10.6%) at 2011. Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides occurred were evenly distributed and the most problematic weed in Chungbuk, Korea.

  • Weeding effect was investigated based on the leaf stages to several different herbicide treatments for an integrated weed management of herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzoides to ACCase and ALS inhibitors in a rice field. Efficacy of soil-applied herbicide treatments before resistant E. oryzoides occurred was very effective. Pentaxazon 5% SC showed over 98% of weeding effect although E. oryzoides were emerged 31 days after the treatment. Until the leaf stage of 2.5, five herbicides, azimsulfuron carfenstole 1.05% GR, bensulfuron-methyl benzobicyclone mefenacet 24.52% SC, bensulfuron-methyl fentrazamide 7% SC, bensulfuron-methyl mefenacet oxadiargyl 21.6% SC and mefenacet pyrazosulfuron-ethyl 3.57% GR showed perfect weeding effect. Benzobicyclone mefenacet penoxulam 21.5% SC and mefenacet pyrazosulfuron-ethyl 3.57% GR were effective at the leaf stage of 3.0. It is very important to select the right herbicides for timing and their systematic application for controlling of E. oryzoides resistant to ACCase- and ALS-inhibitors.

  • Bispyribac-sodium is a new-type herbicide that prevents the occurrence of annual bluegrass by the suppression of anthesis and inflorescence emergence on the bent green. The greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate interaction effect of the bispyribac-sodium with 21 soil- and foliar-applied herbicides in regards of herbicidal activity of annual bluegrass. The remarkable synergism was not found on the combination of bispyribac-sodium with benfluralin, pendimethalin, oryzalin, siduron, chlorphtalim, isoxaben, bifenox, tenylchlor, indanofan, bentazone, imazosulfuron, imazaquin, halosulfuron-methyl and limsulfuron. However, mixture of bispyribac-sodium with mecoprop, triclopyr, metsulfuron-methyl, cyclosulfamuron, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl and pyributicarb produced greater synergism of herbicidal activity when compared with unmixed, single application. Phytotoxicity was low on bentgrass green and fast recovery was observed. In future, it would be strongly necessary to do research to Investigate the effect of bispyribac-sodium combination with other herbicides under various environment and management practices on-site bentgrass green.

  • This study was conducted to obtain information on occurrance ecology of Aneilema keisak Hassk. and establish its effective control system in direct-seeded rice. Optimum germination temperature and storage temperature to break dormancy were $22^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$, respectively. Optimum content of soil moisture for germination was 35%(w/w) in clay loam soil, where recorded 85% of germination rate. In the inter-specific competition between density of Aneilema keisak Hassk. and constant rice-mixed stands, the plant height and the tiller of rice were decreased with increase of density of Aneilema keisak Hassk. Among the herbicides tested, piperophos+dimethametryn(8.2+2.2 g ai/10a) GR and. pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+mefenacet(2.1 + 105 g ai/10g) GR were found to be effective for control of Aneilema keisak Hassk., having more herbicidal effect with an earlier application.

  • Sulfonylurea (SU)-resistant weeds include seven annual weeds such as Monochoria vaginalis, Scirpus juncoides and Cyperus difformis, etc., and three perennial weeds of Scirpus planiculmis, Sagittaria pigmaea and Eleocharis acicularis as of 2010 since identification Monochoria korsakowii in the reclaimed rice field in 1998. The Echinochloa oryzoides resistant to acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase) and acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors has been confirmed in wet-direct seeding rice field of the southern province, Korea in 2009. In the beginning of occurrence of SU-resistant weeds the M. vaginalis, S. juncoides and C. difformis were rapidly and individually spreaded in different fields, however, theses resistant weeds have been occurring simultaneously in the same filed as time goes by. The resistant biotype by weed species demonstrated about 10- to 1,000-fold resistance, base on $GR_{50}$ (50% growth reduction) values of the SU herbicides tested. And the resistant biotype of E. oryzoides to cyhalofop-butyl, pyriminobac-methyl, and penoxsulam was about 14, 8, and 11 times more resistant than the susceptible biotype base on $GR_{50}$ values. In history of paddy herbicides in Korea, the introduction of SU herbicides including besulfuron-metyl and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl that control many troublesome weeds at low use rates and provide excellent crop safety gave farmers and many workers for herbicide business refreshing jolt. The products and applied area of SU-included herbicides have been rapidly increased, and have accounted for about 69% and 96%, respectively, in Korea. The top ten herbicides by applied area were composed of all SU-included herbicides by 2003. The concentrated and successive treatment of ACCase and ALS inhibitors for control of barnyardgrass in direct-seeded rice led up to the resistance of E. oryzoides. Also, SU-herbicides like pyrazosulfuron-ethyl and imazosulfuron which are effective to barnyardgrass can be bound up with the resistance of E. oryzoides. The ALS activity isolated from the resistant biotype of M. korsakowii to SU-herbicides tested was less sensitive than that of susceptible biotype. The concentration of herbicide required for 50% inhibition of ALS activity ($I_{50}$) of the SU-resistant M. korsakowii was 14- to 76-fold higher as compared to the susceptible biotype. No differences were observed in the rates of [$^{14}C$]bensulfuron uptake and translocation. ALS genes from M. vaginalis resistant and susceptible biotypes against SU-herbicides revealed a single amino acid substitution of proline (CCT), at 197th position based on the M. korsakowii ALS sequence numbering, to serin (TCT) in conserved domain A of the gene. Carfentrazone-ethyl and pyrazolate were used mainly to control SU-resistant M. vaginalis by 2006, the early period, in Korea. However, the alternative herbicides such as benzobicyclone, to be possible to control simultaneously the several resistant weeds, have been developing and using broadly because the several resistant weeds have been occurring simultaneously in the same filed. The top ten herbicides by applied area in Korea have been occupied by products of 3-way mixture type including herbicides with alternative mode of action for the herbicide resistant weeds. Mefenacet, fentrazamide and cafenstrole had excellent controlling effects on the ACCase and ALS inhibitors resistant when they were applied within 2 leaf stage.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the introduced route of exotic weeds and the effects of herbicide treatment. Herbicide trial was arranged as a completely randomized block design with treatment 1(\circled1 Dicamba $1\ell$/ha, \circled2 Mecoprop $5\ell$/ha, \circled3 Bentazone $3\ell$.ha, \circled4 Glyphosate $4\ell$/ha and \circled5 Pyrazosulfuron-ethyl 2kg/ha), and treatment 2(\circled1 Dicamba $2\ell$/ha, \circled2 Dicamba $4\ell$/ha, \circled3 Glyphosate $6\ell$/ha, \circled4 Glyphosate 4+Dicamba $1\ell$/ha and \circled5 Glyphosate 4+dicamba $2\ell$/ha) against 10 exotic weed species, and conducted in Suwon, Seosan and Yeongam from 1997 to 1999. Exotic weeds have been mostly introduced within imported cereals for concentrate feed or within seeds for forage production. Most of exotic weeds in forage crop field were controlled more than 95% by herbicide, but it was desirable that the control of exotic weeds was abreast of chemical and ecological method.
