This study was conducted to investigate the efficiency of water quality remediation and the inorganic ion removal characteristics by floating plant; water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) in a batch reactor. Water lettuce can be used to remove N and P and other inorganic nutrients, by consuming them in the form of plant nutrient. The highest nutrient absorption of water lettuce was $112.5meL^{-1}\;N$ in Sonneveld-2S, $56.6meL^{-1}\;N$ in Sonneveld-1S, $31.8meL^{-1}\;N$ in sewage and P value was also the highest in Sonneveld-2S as $15.6meL^{-1}$ and in sewage as $5.0meL^{-1}$. These results indicated that using water lettuce held some promise in the context of purification of eutrophication. Also water lettuce had a preference for absorption N. Under Sonneveld-2S treatment, nitrogen percentage was the highest in plant tissue due to the highest concentration of nitrogen and removal by water lettuce. Under sewage, percentage of total N in both plant parts was high. Both above and underground parts, P percentage was less than N. It might be due to the fact that the absorption amount of P was less than N by water lettuce. It meaned that the ability of N removal by water lettuce was higher than that of P, relatively. In summary, these results show that the use of this plant was a viable option.
The ${\beta}$-D-fructofuranosidase (EC 3.2.1.26) is an important enzyme from a historical point of view, discovered by French biologist Berthelot in 1860 and was first used to study enzymology. ${\beta}$-D-fructosfuranosidase catalyzes the hydrolysis of sucrose into D-glucose and D-fructose. Four biochemical subgroups of ${\beta}$-D-fructofuranosidase have been investigated in plants. There are vacuolar (soluble acid), cytoplasmic (soluble alkaline), membrane-bound (insoluble alkaline), and cell wall-bound (insoluble acid) ${\beta}$-D-fructofuranosidase by purification. Their biochemical characteristics are distinct. It suggested that those enzymes might be different gene products. The contribution of each of these enzymes to sucrose management in the plant is likely to be correlated with their localization. Common localization in developing cells in tissues from a range of developmental stages and plant parts suggests that all of the isoforms may be closely involved in nutrient transport. The ${\beta}$-D-fructofuranosidases were most commonly found associated with maturing tissues in developing fruits, leaves, and roots. The ${\beta}$-D-fructofuranosidase activity varies in the relationship between growth and expansion through cell division, development of storage organs and tissues, and the relationship of plant defense responses. It is necessary to summarize more researches in order to know the definite physiological function.
This study evaluated the ecotoxicological properties of livestock waste water treated by a LID (Low Impact Development) system, using a mixture of bio-reeds and bio-ceramics as suitable bed media for a subsequent treatment process of a livestock wastewater treatment plant. The relationship between the pollutant reduction rate and the ecotoxicity was analyzed with the effluents from the inlet pilot plant, with vegetated swale and wetlands and the batch type of an infiltration trench. Each pilot plant consisted of a bio process using bio-reeds and bio-ceramics as bed media, as well as a general process using general reeds and a bed as a control group. The results indicated that, after applying the HRT 24 hour LID method, the ecotoxicity was considerably lowered and the batch type pilot plant was shown to be effective for toxicity reduction. The LID method is expected to be effective for water quality management, considering ecotoxicity by not only as a nonpoint source pollution abatement facility but also, as a subsequent treatment process linked with a livestock manure purification facility. It is necessary to take the LID technic optimization study further to apply it as a subsequent process for livestock wastewater treatment.

It is an urgent issue to manage and reduce non-point pollution sources for improving the water quality of stream and lakes in rural areas. In this study, in order to reduce non-point pollution sources in rural area, Gabion mattresses was proposed to provide protection of riverbanks with anaerobic and aerobic area. The utilization of this was assessed by lab scale model test and pilot plant test. After filling the inside of the gabion mattresses with aggregate, the filtration zone under anaerobic and aerobic conditions was formed to treat the contaminants. In addition, vegetation was deposited on the surfae of the gabion to prevent the inflow of soil and to promote purification by the plant. COD and nitrogen content (T-N, $NH_4{^+}$, -N, $NO_3{^-}N$) were monitored in model and field tests. The lab scale model test showed removal efficiency of 17% of TCOD, 35% of SCOD, 14% of TN, 62% of $NH_4{^+}$, -N, and 33% of $NO_3{^-}$ N. Also, pilot plant test showed removal efficiency of 24% of TCOD, 29% of SCOD, 47% of TN, 50% of $NH_4{^+}-N$, 33% of $NO_3{^-}$, N and 29% of TP.
In this study, we investigated the separation behavior of the anticancer agent paclitaxel and its semi-synthetic precursor 10-deacetylpaclitaxel (10-DAP) from plant cell cultures. As a result of sequential separation/purification performed by biomass extraction with solvent, liquid-liquid extraction, adsorbent treatment, hexane precipitation, and fractional precipitation, the adsorbent treatment was found to be the most effective in separating and recovering 10-DAP from paclitaxel. The optimal adsorbent type, crude extract/adsorbent ratio, and adsorbent treatment temperature were sylopute, 1:1.5 (w/w), and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. The separation/recovery of 10-DAP from paclitaxel was 74.1% in adsorbent treatment process under optimal conditions.
This study conducted the experiment of reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) and Formaldehyde concentration by Native plants, Fatsia japonica and Ardisia pusilla. The two plants are advantageous in that they are highly available as they grow wild, and being easy to get. Fatsia japonica is a plant of its wide and large leaf diverged 7 or 8 parts, which is thought to have a high effect of air purification. Ardisia pusilla has a smaller leaf than Fatsia japonica, which is characterized by more leaves and beautiful. Field measurements were performed using Fatsia japonica and Ardisia pusilla which were verified as air-purifying plants in Korea. The effect of reducing the concentration of VOCs and Formaldehyde by plant studied in a full scale mock-up model. The dimensions of the two models were equal. The concentration of Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene, Stylene, Formaldehyde were monitored, since they were known as most toxic materials. The concentration of VOCs was monitored three hours after the plants were placed and three days after the plants were placed. Field measurements were performed in models where the plants were placed and were not. As a result, they had all an effect of reducing pollution. In all cases of experiment of planting and growing volume, the more planting volume, the more excellent the effect. Toluene was more effective in Fatsia japonica and Ardisia pusilla planted, Formaldehyde was more effective in Fatsia japonica planted respectively. In planting and growing and placing experiment, the placement at sunny spot was more effective than that at scattered growing. When Fatsia japonica was placed at sunny spot, the reduction effect of Formaldehyde was the most excellent, and when Ardisia pusilla was placed at sunny spot, the reduction effect of Toluene was the most effective.

Chemicals are injected in order to remove a variety of organic substances contained in the water purification plant influent. It can be determined with measuring sedimentation turbidity 4~7 hours later, whether the chemical dosage rate is proper or not, which make the real-time feedback control impossible. In addition, manual operation in accordance with the Jar-Test carried out in the laboratory and the operator's experience may cause the experimental and human error by the changes of organic characteristics and water quality. Especially at night ad weekend, the rate have been determined only by the operator judgment owing to environment engineer's absence. Therefore, the decision of optimal chemical dosage rate using proposed intelligent control algorithm is expected to result in real-time injection and cost reduction.
This paper presents treatment efficiency and plant growth of a surface-flow constructed wetland system (30 meter in length and 10 meter in width) over one year after its establishment on a floodplain of a stream. Cattails (Typha angustiflora) grown on pots were transplanted on one half of its area from inlets and reeds (Phragmites australis) on another half from an outlet. Effluent discharged from a secondary-level treatment plant was funneled into the system. The stems of cattails and reeds emerging in April 2001 grew up to 165.9 cm and 95.3 cm, respectively until July 2001. The number of stems of cattails arid reeds in July 2001 increased by 65% and 100%, respectively, compared with that just after their planting. The growth of cattails was better than that of reeds during study period. The removal rates for SS, $BOD_5$, T-N and T-P was 33%, 43%, 31%, and 51%, respectively. The system was inundated seven times by storms over the monitoring period, which disturbed its environment and led to its lower treatment rates. The increase of SS concentration in effluent after inundation of the system was attributed to the falls of soil particles onto its water surface, which had been attached to the emergent plants by floods. Purification rates for T-N were relatively low for the period of late fall through winter until early spring due to lower water temperature which may have retarded microbial nitrification and denitrification mechanisms. Reduction in T-P concentration during fall and winter was relatively higher than that during summer and spring, which may have resulted from no system perturbations by floods and heavy storms during fall and winter.
The carbon-in-ash system for simultaneously monitoring the unburned carbon in fly ash produced in a coal-fired power plan is designed and evaluated using the domestic fly ash produced in the coal-fired power plant. Real time monitoring is very important to control the combustion of the boiler in the coal-fired power plant and the purification system for fly ash recycling. The carbon-in-ash system based on the capacitance measurement consists of a LCR meter, a duct collector and an electrode cell. The capacitance of fly ash increases linearly with increasing fly ash carbon contents. The water content in fly ash plays an important role on the ash capacitance. The empirical equation for predicting the content of unburned carbon in fly ash produced in the domestic Boryung, Hadong and Samchenpo coal-fired power plants can be derived in the range of carbon content 0-20%.
The nucleotide sequence of the Paenibacillus curdlanolyticus B-6 xyn10A gene, encoding a xylanase Xyn10A, consists of 3,828 nucleotides encoding a protein of 1,276 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 142,726 Da. Sequence analysis indicated that Xyn10A is a multidomain enzyme comprising nine domains in the following order: three family 22 carbohydrate-binding modules (CBMs), a family 10 catalytic domain of glycosyl hydrolases (xylanase), a family 9 CBM, a glycine-rich region, and three surface layer homology (SLH) domains. Xyn10A was purified from a recombinant Escherichia coli by a single step of affinity purification on cellulose. It could effectively hydrolyze agricultural wastes and pure insoluble xylans, especially low substituted insoluble xylan. The hydrolysis products were a series of short-chain xylooligosaccharides, indicating that the purified enzyme was an endo-$\beta$-1,4-xylanase. Xyn10A bound to various insoluble polysaccharides including Avicel, $\alpha$-cellulose, insoluble birchwood and oat spelt xylans, chitin, and starches, and the cell wall fragments of P. curdlanolyticus B-6, indicating that both the CBM and the SLH domains are fully functioning in the Xyn10A. Removal of the CBMs from Xyn10A strongly reduced the ability of plant cell wall hydrolysis. These results suggested that the CBMs of Xyn10A play an important role in the hydrolysis of plant cell walls.
