Parametric study was performed using the SCW numerical model for evaluating the performance of the SCW. The five ground related parameters, which are porosity, hydraulic conductivity, thermal conductivity, specific heat, geothermal gradient, and five SCW design parameters, which are pumping rate, well depth well diameter, dip tube diameter, bleeding rate, were used in the study. Numerical simulations were performed for short-term (24-hour) simulation. The study results indicate that the parameters that have important influence on the performance of SCW were hydraulic conductivity, thermal conductivity, geothermal gradient, pumping rate, and bleeding rate. Overall, this study showed that various factors had a cumulative influence on the performance of the SCW, and a numerical simulation can be used to accurately predict the performance of the SCW.
X-ray structures of pharaonis phoborhodopsin (ppR) show the different direction of the side chain of Arg72 from that of the corresponding residue (Arg82) of bacteriorhodopsin, BR. For BR, this residue is considered to play an important role in the proton pumping. In order to investigate the role of Arg72 in ppR, we constructed Arg72 mutants of R72A, R72K and R72Q, and measured the photocycle and proton pumping activities. The pH-titration curves on the absorption maximum of the mutants were shifted to alkaline in comparison of that of the wild-type. This may imply the increase of pKa of D75, suggesting the presence of the (probably electric) interaction between D75 and Arg72. Rate constants of the M-decay were 3-7 times faster than that of the wild-type, and the time for the completion of the photocycling was also reduced. Using Sn0$_2$ electrode, the rate of transmembrane proton transport was measured upon illumination. The photo-induced proton pumping activities were estimated after the corrections that are the percentages of the associated form of D75 (which has no pumping activity) and the photocycling rates. R72A and R72Q showed the reduced activity while R72K did not reduce the activity.
At riverbank filtration sites, groundwater levels of alluvial aquifers near rivers are sensitive to variation in river discharge and pumping quantities. In this study, the groundwater level fluctuation, pumping quantity, and streamflow rate at the site of a riverbank filtration plant, which produces drinking water, in the lower Nakdong River basin, South Korea were interrelated. The relationship between drawdown ratio and river discharge was very strong with a correlation coefficient of 0.96, showing a greater drawdown ratio in the wet season than in the dry season. Autocorrelation and cross-correlation were carried out to characterize groundwater level fluctuation. Autoregressive model analysis of groundwater water level fluctuation led to efficient estimation and prediction of pumping for riverbank filtration in relation to river discharge rates, using simple inputs of river discharge and pumping data, without the need for numerical models that require data regarding several aquifer properties and hydrologic parameters.
This paper presents a study regarding the influence of various water levels on the characteristics of subgrade mud pumping through a self-developed test instrument. The characteristics of mud pumping are primarily reflected by axial strain, excess pore water pressure, and fine particle migration. The results show that the axial strain increases nonlinearly with an increase in cycles number; however, the increasing rate gradually decreases, thus, an empirical model for calculating the axial strain of the samples is presented. The excess pore water pressure increases rapidly first and then decreases slowly with an increase in cycles number. Furthermore, the dynamic stress within the soil first rapidly decreases and then eventually slows. The results indicate that the axial strain, excess pore water pressure, and the height and weight of the migrated fine particles decrease significantly with a low water level. In this study, when the water level is 50 mm lower than the subgrade soil surface, the issue of subgrade mud pumping no longer exist.
This study was conducted to analyse groundwater flow in the Bugok hot spring area using the MODFLOW model which can simulate three dimensional groundwater flow both in confined and unconfined aquifers. Based on this study the following conclusions were obtained: 1) The hydraulic conductivity and the specific storage of the aquifer were 0.0135 m/day and 0.020, respectively, and the model-predicted groundwater elevation agreed well with the observed one. 2) Simulation results showed that the groundwater level declines at the end of the one-year simulation period when the annual recharge rate is small and the annual pumping rate high, which is the worst combination. Except that combination, the groundwater level does not decline at the end of one-year simulation period indication the pumping rates used were allowable. 3) The safe yield depends upon the magnitudes of the recharge and pumping rates. The pumping rate should not produce excess decline of groundwater level around April when the water level is the lowest in a year.
An analytical model was developed to estimate the stream depletion due to cyclic groundwater pumping by extending the Hunt's analytical solution which was derived from considering the hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer and the streambed. The model was applied to analyze the long-term effects of groundwater pumping on stream depletion during irrigation season. For the case of a total of 1,500 conditions according to various aquifer and streambed hydraulic characteristics and stream-well distance, the stream depletion due to cyclic groundwater pumping for 10 years was calculated and the results were graphically represented. Especially, the maximum and average stream depletion rates were calculated and compared with the results for continuous groundwater pumping. Furthermore, considering both stream depletion and return flow rates, the limit hydraulic condition that minimizes the influence of groundwater pumping for irrigation water supply on stream depletion was suggested.
This study aimed at simulating several responses to stresses caused by the ground water level variations around the K-1 oil stockpile. For this simulation, we considered the characteristic hydrogeological condition including the special occurrence of long and thick acidic dyke, which is regarded as the main geological structure dominating the ground water flow system at this study area. We activated twenty-four imaginary wells which are located in northern and southern area around central K-1 site. Each neighboring distance is altogether 300 m and whole distance between K-1 site and remote wells is 1,200 m. Through the modeling, we operated the long-term and continuous pumping tests and finally categorized five zones based on maximum pumping rates for the imaginary wells; zone I within 300 meter distance from K-1 site with a pumping rate of 50 $m^3/day$; zone II between 300 to 600 meter distance from K-1 site with a pumping rate of 75 $m^3/day$; zone III between 600 to 900 meter distance from K-1 site with 150 $m^3/day$; zone IV between 900 to 1,200 meter distance from K-1 site with 300 $m^3/day$; and zone V of acidic dyke area. At zone V, especially because of their possibility of high transmissivity for groundwater flow, it is necessary to control and restrict groundwater discharge.
Performance data in the literature on air lift pumps have been based primarily on pumps of long length and large diameter (high lift pumps). Since mariculture operations involve pumps of relatively short length and small diameter, performance data are required for efficient operation. To provide such data, an experimental apparatus was designed and fabricated to test all lift pumps from 2.1 to 3.4 cm inside diameter and from 40 to 300 cm in length. Instrumentation was provided to measure water flow rate and air flow rate as well as water temperature, air temperature, and pressure throughout the system. Results from this study correlate well with high lift pump data in that, for a given pump geometry, maximum water flow occurs for a specific air flow rate. Driving the pump with air flows larger or smaller than this optimum flow rate will decrease the pumping rate. The optimum flows are significantly different for low lift pumps compared to high lift pumps. However, the pumping rate for low lift pumps approaches that for high lift pumps with increasing length.

The use of groundwater and ground_heat is one of the ways to use natural and renewable energy, and it has been considered as a technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy-saving. There are a few researches on the optimum design for the open-loop geothermal system. In this study, to develop the optimal design method numerical simulation of the open-loop geothermal system with two-wells was performed by a groundwater and heat transfer model. In this paper, a study was performed to analyze the system performance according to well distance and pumping flow rate. In the result, average heat exchange rate and heat source temperature were calculated and it was found that they were dependent on the pumping rate.
The flow rate is higher in ACEO micro-pumps with step electrodes than in micro-pumps with planar asymmetric electrodes. In the present study, numerical simulations were made of a ACEO micro-pump with step electrodes to investigate the effects of electrode design parameters on the pumping flow rate. The electrical charge at the electrodes, the fluid flow, and potential were solved, taking into account the finite size of ions, that is, the steric effect. This effect is recognized to be capable of quantifying the electrical charge more accurately in the electrical double layer subject to high voltages. Geometrical parameters such as heights, widths, and gaps of three-dimensional electrodes were optimized to enhance the pumping flow rate. Moreover, the effect of amplitude and frequency of AC was studied.
