  • The $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$ thin films were fabricated with $Pb(La,Ti)O_3$ buffers in-situ onto $Pt/Ti/SiO_2/Si$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique using a Nd:YAG laser with energy density of $2.5J/cm^2$, and deposited for 10 minutes at $550^{\circ}C$ of substrate temperature. And then, the films have been annealed at $550^{\circ}C$ in oxygen ambient pressure. The remanent polarization value is increased by using buffer layers but coercive field of films is slightly increased.

  • This study was designed to determine the most effective concentration of fluoride and energy density of laser irradiation for the anticarious effect. For this study surface hardness in enamel was measured before and after irradiation with pulsed Nd;YAG laser and the topical application of fluoride. Of the permanent mandibular anterior hovine teeth, healthy, carious free ones were used. Three hundred specimens were made. Specimens within 25~45 Vickers hardness numbers were assigned to 20 control and experimental stoops ; each containing 15 specimens. After forming artificial carious lesions, 10 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 20 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and 30 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ energies were irradiated on the enamel surface of each experimental group. Also NaF, NH4F, Elmex gel(amine fluoride) and APF gel fluoride compounds were applied topically. Next, all the specimens were placed into the pH circulatory procedures for eight days. Vickers hardness numbers were measured using a microhardness tester. Surface changes of the enamel were observed using an scanning electron microscope. The comparative ana1ysis yielded the following results : 1. The reduction of surface hardness of the enamel surface was less in all groups with fluoride application than in the group without fluoride application. 2. The APF gel croup with 10 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ irradiation showed the lowest reduction of surface hardness. 3. The reduction of surface hardness of the enamel surface in the group of laser irradiation without fluoride application not showed any significant difference according to the energy density of the laser. 4. Under the scanning electron microscope, in enamel irradiated with 10J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ showed appearance similar to acid etching surface. In enamel irradiated with 20 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$, line enamel crack was detected. In enamel irradiated with 30j/$\textrm{cm}^2$, severe enamel crack and fusion of enamel were detected. These results suggest that one could obtain the best anticariogenic effects without damage to teeth in the group of application of APF gel after laser irradiation with 10 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • Periodontal pocket is one of the most frequently developed clinical feature on the teeth with periodontal disease. In order to determine the gingival curettage effect of intrapocket irradiation of a pulsed Nd : YAG laser on periodontally involved teeth, bilateral 60 teeth with $4{\sim}6mm$ in probing pocket depth 1 week after supragingival scaling were selected. On half of them the intrapocket irradiation($300{\mu}m$ fiber optic, 1.5W power, for 2min.) of a pulsed-Nd : YAG laser(EL.EN.EN06O, Italy) was applied as the lased group. On the contralateral 30 teeth the subgingival curettage was accomplished by Gracey curettes as the curattage group. The periodontal pocket tissues were surgically excised by the modified Widman flap technique immediately after the intrapocket irradiation or subgingival curettage, subsequently fixed with 10% neutral formalin, sectioned in $4{\sim}6{\mu}m$ thickness, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Surface characteristics and incomplete removal of the pocket epithelium were evaluated under light microscope. And the difference between the lased group and the curettage group was statistically analyzed by Chi-square test in Microstat program. The results were as follows ; 1. The plane surface was observed more frequently in the curettage group(73.3%) than in the lased group(23.3%), and the rough surface was observed more frequently in the lased grOoup(63.3%) than in the curettage group(6.7%)(p<0.05). 2. The rate of incomplete removal of the pocket epithelium was relatively high in both the lased group(76.6%) and the curettage group(86.6%), and there was no significant difference between the lased group and the curettage group(p>0.l). The results suggest that the further studies including various power control of laser should be succeeded in order to obtain more favorable results by the intrapocket irradiation of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser than the subgingival curettage with Gracey curettes.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the thermal behavior on material surface and the variation in the surface morphology of aluminum 6061 alloy by the Nd:YAG pulsed-laser irradiation. First, we predicted the surface temperature variation during pulsed-laser irradiation by using the two dimensional finite element analysis. When the pulsed-laser of 133 mJ energy and 5 ns pulse duration is irradiated on the surface of aluminum alloy, the material surface is thought to be melting because the surface temperature rises steadily up to about $660^{\circ}C$ exceeding the melting point. Also, the experimental results show that the solidification microstructure has been developed clearly after surface melting. Second, the diameter of melted zone was analysed by finite element analysis and measured by OM(Optical Microscopy). It increased logarithmically with increase in the number of laser irradiation. In addition, AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy) measurement showed an increase in the average surface roughness during pulsed-laser irradiation.

  • The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of Nd:YAG laser irradiation and fluorides on acid drink demineralized enamel. The materials were 30 freshly extracted permanent premolars with intact smooth enamel surfaces. They were demineralized with Coca-cola at $37^{\circ}C$ for 12hours and then irradiated by Nd:YAG laser with 6W power, $50mJ/cm^2$ energy density, and 20Hz pulse repetition. After laser irradiation, teeth were treated by three kinds of fluorides; (1)0.05% NaF fluoride solution (2)1.23% APF gel and (3)0.1%F fluoride varnish, microhardness(VHN) and Diagnodent scores were measured and the surfaces of each treated specimens were also observed with SEM under 1500 magnification. The results were as follows: 1. In the change of microhardness(VHN), it decreased to 34.68% from the initial micrhardness, increased to 78.37% after laser irradiation and increased to 82.62% after fluoride treatment, there were significant differences except when it was irradiated and treated with fluoride(P<0.05). 2. In the change of Diagnodent scores, it was decreased to 28.08% from the initial scores after demineralization, and then increased to 59.81% after laser irradiation, and increased to 82.17% after fluoride treatment. Scores were different significantly between the scores of initial, demineralization, laser irradiation and fluoride treatment(P<0.05). All the scores were not different significantly between fluoride types. 3. SEM observation showed that the lased enamel surfaces after demineralization were thermally degenerated and showed molten lava-like appearance and crater with cracks and many microholes.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanism of improving acid resistance of Nd-YAG laser irradiated tooth enamel and determine the most effective energy density for improving acid resistance. The bovine tooth enamel were lased with a pulsed Nd-YAG laser. The energy densities of exposed laser beam were varied from 10 to $70\;J/cm^2$. To investigate the degree of improving acid resistance by irradiation, all the samples were submerged to demineralize in 0.5 N $HClO_4$ solution for 1 minute. After 1 minute, 0.05 % $LaCl_3$ was added to the solution for interrupting the demineralization reaction. The amounts of dissolved calcium and phosphate in the solution were measured by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer and the UV/VIS spectrophotometer, respectively. To examine the mechanism of improving acid resistance, X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were taken. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the samples were obtained in the $10^{\circ}{\sim}80^{\circ}2{\theta}$ range with $Cu-K{\alpha}$ radiation using M18HF(Mac Science Co.) with X-ray diffractometer operating at 40 KV and 300 mA. The infra-red spectra of the ground samples in 300 mg KBr pellets 10 mm diameter were obtained in the $4000cm^{-1}\;to\;400cm^{-1}$ range using JASCO 300E spectrophotometer. The scanning electron microscopy was carried out using JSM6400(JEOL Co.) with $500{\sim}2000$ times magnification. The results were as follow 1. The concentration of calcium dissolved from laser irradiated enamel with $50J/cm^2$ was significantly lesser than that of unlased control group (p<0.05) 2. From the result of the X-ray diffraction analysis, $\beta$-TCP, which increases acid solubility, was identified in lased enamel but the diffraction peaks of (002) and (004) became sharp with increasing energy density of laser irradiation. This means that the crystals in lased samples were grown through the c-axis and subsequently, the acid solubility of enamel decreased. 3. The a-axis parameter was slightly increased by laser irradiation, whereas the c-axis parameter was almost constant except for a little decrease at $50J/cm^2$. 4. In the infra-red spectra of lased enamels, phosphate bands ($600{\sim}500cm^{-1}$), B-carbonate bands (870, $1415{\sim}1455cm^{-1}$), and A-carbonate band ($1545cm^{-1}$) were observed. The amounts of phosphate bands and the B-carbonate bands were reduced, on the other hand, the amount of the A-carbonate band was increased by increase the energy density. 5. The SEM experiments reveal that the surface melting and recrystallization were appeared at $30J/cm^2$ and the cracks were observed at $70J/cm^2$. From above results, It may be suggested that the most effective energy density for improving acid resistance of tooth enamel with the irradiation of Nd-YAG laser was $50J/cm^2$. The mechanism of improving acid resistance were reduction of permeability due to surface melting and recrystallization of lased enamel and reduction of acid solubility of enamel due to decrease of carbonate content and growth of crystal.

  • This paper suggests a monitoring method for the pulsed laser spot welding of the thin metal sheets using a point IR(InfraRed) sensor. A new criterion was introduced and the experimental results guaranteed the efficiency. The ideal radiation feature was derived from the mathematical model and was simulated. The radiation feature is robust to withstand the change of measuring condition and can be used to detect the absorbed laser energy. In an experiment, the radiation feature was examined for the differect laser energy. The pulse width and the laser power was variated and the radiation feature was examined. In the other experiment, the relationship between the weld strength and radiation feature was examined. Artificial Neural Network(ANN) was employed to find out the relationship. The correlation coefficient between the real strength and the estimated strength is high as 0.94 and the mean square error is low as 0.64 kgf learned parts. Another group of the welds was used to appraise the learning efficiency. The correlation coefficient between the measured and the estimated weld strength is high as 0.91.

  • Titanium and its alloys have excellent corrosion resistance, high strength to weight ratios and creep properties in high temperature, which make them using many various fields of application. Especially, pure titanium, which has outstanding resistance for the stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting and microbiologically influenced corrosion, brings out to the best material for the heat exchanger, ballast tank, desalination facilities, and so on. Responding to these needs, welding processes for titanium are also being used GTAW, GMAW, PAW, EBW, LBW, resistance welding and diffusion bonding, etc. However, titanium is very active and highly susceptible to embrittlement by oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon at high temperature, so it needs to shield the weld metal from the air and these gases during welding by non-active gas. In this study, it was possible to get sound beads without humping and spatter with a decrease of peak power according to increase of pulse width, change of welding speed and overlap rate for heat input control, and shield conditions at pulsed laser welding of titanium plates for Lap welding.

  • In recent years, concern has been raised about the technique of controlling electrical breakdown by using laser in many fields. Especially, laser has attracted much attention in the Electro-Discharge Macining(EDM) because of its many merits. Therefore, this research has been performed to obtain fundamental data relevant to discharge processing by using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The experiments of laser-guided dc discharge by laser radiation have been carried out at low air pressure ranging from 0.2 to 20 torr. The minimum laser-guided dc discharge voltage V\ulcorner at the given pressures P and distances D between an anode and a cathode was measured. It is found that the minimum laser-guided dc discharge voltage is much lower than the natural discharge voltage V\ulcorner\ulcorner, and the values of V\ulcorner and V\ulcorner as a function of P.D has a similar tendency. The laser output energy Eout decreases with input pulse duration tp increasing, and the more the value of tp increases, the higher that of V\ulcorner is obtained because the number of photons during the discharge time N decreases with t\ulcorner increasing. There is the time lag frequently when the discharge by laser radiation is misguided under the condition of the applied voltage less than V_G.min.
