In this paper, an effective carrier-based modulation (CBM) strategy to reduce the switching losses for indirect matrix converters (IMCs) is presented. The discontinuous pulse width modulation method is applied to decrease the switching numbers in one carrier cycle, and an optimum offset voltage is selected to avoid commutations of the high output phase currents. By decreasing the switching numbers along with avoiding commutation of the high currents, the proposed CBM strategy significantly reduces the switching losses in IMCs. In addition, the proposed CBM strategy is independent of load conditions, such as load power and power factor, and it has good performance in terms of the input/output waveforms. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed CBM strategy.

DC/DC converters are commonly used to generate regulated DC output voltages with high-power efficiencies from different DC input sources. The converters can be applied in the regenerative braking of DC motors to return energy back to the supply, resulting in energy savings for the systems at periodic intervals. The fundamental converter studied here consists of an IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar mode Transistor), an inductor, a capacitor, a diode, a PWM-IC (Pulse Width Modulation Integrated Circuit) controller with oscillator, amplifier, and comparator. The PWM-IC is a core element and delivers the switching waveform to the gate of the IGBT in a stable manner. Display of the DC/DC converter output depends on the IGBT's changes in the threshold voltage and PWM-IC's pulse width. The simulation was conducted by PSIM software, and the hardware of the DC/DC converter was also implemented. It is necessary to study the fact that the output voltage depends on the duty rate of D, and to compare the output of experimental result with the theory and the simulation.

This paper describes operating and capacitor voltage balancing of the modular multilevel converter. The paper focuses on sizing of the cell capacitor and establishes approximate expressions for the capacitor voltage. Simulations and experiments results obtained from three-level modular converter are used to demonstrate its viability in medium voltage applications. It is shown that the modular converter can operate over the full modulation index linear range independent of load power factor.

This paper presents a design of a high-efficiency CMOS DC-DC boost converter using a current-sensing feedback method. High-precision current-sensing circuity is incorporated in order to sense the current flowing in the inductor, which determines the switching scheme of the pulse-width modulation. The external components or large chip area for the frequency compensation can be avoided while maintaining the stable operations of the converter. Various input/output voltage levels can be available through the external resistor strings. The designed DC-DC converter is fabricated in a 0.18-um CMOS technology with a thick-gate oxide option. The converter shows the maximum efficiency over 90% for the output voltage of 3.3V and load current larger than 200mA. The load regulation is 1.15% for the load current change of 100mA.

The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been widely applied to various industrial areas because of its various advantages and structural characteristics. Therefore, many methods for synthesizing the output voltage of MMC have been studied. Among these methods, phase-shifted pulse width modulation (PSPWM) is frequently used in MMC systems because it has diverse merits, such as excellent output qualities even with a small number of cells and uniform power distribution among cells. In this study, the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage is analyzed in accordance with the number of cells in one arm of a single-delta bridge cell MMC in order to compare PSPWM methods in terms of the THD of the output voltage. The physical characteristics of the triangle and sawtooth carrier waves used for the PSPWM and the mathematical modeling of output voltage are introduced. Then, the obtained results are verified through real-time simulation of a 1 MW single-delta bridge cell MMC system.
The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been receiving increased attentions in recent years. The new modular multilevel converter is a derivative topology from the traditional MMC in which the number of sub-modules (SMs) necessitated by each phase can be reduced by one. This paper presents a phase-shifted carrier pulse-width modulation (PSC-PWM) for the new MMC with an optimal phase-shifted angle to suppress the harmonics of the output voltage. Further, the harmonic features when the capacitor voltage of the middle SM is selected as two different values are also investigated. Moreover, in order to avoid introducing an unnecessary dc offset current at the ac terminals of the new MMC, a novel capacitor voltage balancing scheme is proposed by adjusting the amplitude of the reference signals rather than the offset. Finally, the validity and effectiveness of the proposed modulation and balancing schemes have been verified by experimental results based on a three-phase prototype of the new MMC.

Common-mode voltage (CMV) causes overvoltage stress to winding insulation and damages AC motors. CMV with high dv/dt causes leakage currents, which create noise problems for equipment installed near the converter. This study proposes a new pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategy for three-level T-type NPC inverters. This strategy substantially eliminates CMV. The principle for selecting suitable triangle carrier signals for the three-level T-type NPC is described. The proposed method can mitigate the peak value of CMV by 50% compared with the phase disposition pulse-width modulation method. Furthermore, the proposed method exhibits better harmonic spectrum and lower root mean square value for the CMV than those of the reduced-CMV method on the basis of the phase opposition disposition PWM scheme with modulation index higher than 0.5. The proposed modulation can easily be implemented using software without any additional hardware modifications. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed carrier phase-shift PWM method has good output waveform performance and reduces CMV.

This paper presents a white-LED driver IC for a mobile application. It uses a high efficiency current mode boost converter method for a low voltage application. For a LED drive, it provides a PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) and analog dimming function. The device was designed and fabricated using 0.35um BCD process. The evaluated waveforms for an implemented IC show promising results.

This paper proposes an improved low frequency Selective Harmonic Mitigation-PWM (SHM-PWM) technique. The proposed method mitigates the low order harmonics of the output voltage up to the $50^{th}$ harmonic well and satisfies the grid codes EN 50160 and CIGRE-WG 36-05. Using a modified criterion for the switching angles, the range of the modulation index for non-linear SHM equations is improved, without increasing the switching frequency of the CHB converter. Due to the low switching frequency of the CHB converter, mitigating the harmonics of the converter up to the $50^{th}$ order and finding a wider modulation index range, the size and cost of the passive filters can be significantly reduced with the proposed technique. Therefore, the proposed technique is more efficient than the conventional SHM-PWM. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a 7-level Cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter is utilized for the study. Simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the above claims.
