  • Piezo ceramic actuator is used for various industrial products such as spray, dispenser, and valve control etc. Since the deflection of the piezo ceramic element depends on the applied voltage, it is required a power amplifier with high voltage supply for driving the piezo ceramic actuators. In this paper, we develop a simple H-bridge type power amplifier and a compact flyback type high voltage switching mode power supply for piezo ceramic actuators. It is easy to adjust the amount of energy input to piezo ceramic actuator by pulse-width-modulation with H-bridge type power amplifier.

  • A novel integrated laser, that is, a distributed reflector laser diode integrated with an electroabsorption modulator, is proposed to improve the output efficiency, single-mode stability, and chirp. The proposed laser can be realized using the selective metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy technique (that is, control of the width of the insulating mask), and its fabrication process is almost the same as the conventional electroabsorption modulated laser (EML) process except for the asymmetric coupling coefficient structure along the cavity. For our analysis, an accurate time-domain transfer-matrix-based laser model is developed. Based on this model, we perform steady-state and large-signal analyses. The performances of the proposed laser, such as the output power, extinction ratio, and chirp, are compared with those of the EML. Under 10-Gbps NRZ modulation, we can obtain a 30% higher output power and about 50% lower chirp than the conventional EML. In particular, the simulation results show that the chirp provided by the proposed laser can appear to have a longer wavelength side at the leading edge of the pulse and a shorter wavelength side at the falling edge.

  • The response characteristics of $H_2O_2$ monopropellant thrusters at a pulse mode were presented in this paper. A catalyst bed was fixed to $MnO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ to investigate the thruster design effect to response time. Three different thrusters (50 N class) having different injectors, ullage volumes, catalyst grain sizes, and reactor volumes were prepared to investigate the response characteristics. As a result, the ignition delay, pressure rising and tail-off time of case 2-2 thruster with 16-20 mesh catalyst size were 14, 108, 94 ms respectively, which were comparable to requirement of response time at commercial hydrazine thrusters.

  • The atomization characteristics of the dual air supplying two-fluid nozzle were investigated experimentally using PIV and PDA systems. The twin-fluid nozzle is composed of three main parts: the feeding injector to supply fluid that is controlled by a PWM (pulse-width modulation) mode, the adaptor as a device with the ports for supplying the carrier and assist air, and the main nozzle to produce sprays. The main nozzle has the swirler with four equally spaced tangential slots, which gives the injecting fluid an angular momentum. The swirl angle in the swirler varied with $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$. The ratios of carrier air to assist air and ALR (total air to liquid) were 0.55 and 1.23, respectively. The macroscopic behavior of the spray was investigated using PIV system, and the AMD and SMD distributions of the sprays were measured using PDA system. As a result, the SMD distribution increases along the radial distance, and it decreases with the increase of swirl angle in swirler.

  • A digital readout IC for capacitive sensors is presented. Digital capacitance readout circuits suffer from static capacitance of sensors, especially single-ended sensors, and require large passive elements to cancel such DC offset signal. For this reason, to maximize a dynamic range with a small die area, the proposed circuit features digital filters having a coarse and fine compensation steps. Moreover, by employing switched-capacitor circuit for the front-end, correlated double sampling (CDS) technique can be adopted to minimize low-frequency device noise. The proposed circuit targeted 8-kHz signal bandwidth and oversampling ratio (OSR) of 64, thus a $3^{rd}$-order ${\Delta}{\Sigma}$ modulator operating at 1 MH was used for pulse-density-modulated (PDM) output. The proposed IC was designed in a 0.18-${\mu}m$ CMOS mixed-mode process, and occupied $0.86{\times}1.33mm^2$. The measurement results shows suppressed DC power under about -30 dBFS with minimized device flicker noise.

  • A study of terahertz waves was made for the nondestructive evaluation of FRP (Fiber reinforced plastics) composite materials. The terahertz systems were consisted of time domain spectroscopy (TDS) and continuous wave (CW). The composite materials investigated include both non-conducting polymeric composites and conducting carbon fiber composites. Terahertz signals in the TDS mode resembles that of ultrasound; however, unlike ultrasound, a terahertz pulse was not able to detect a material with conductivity. The CFRP (Carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates were utilized for confirming the experimentation in the terahertz NDE. In carbon composites the penetration of terahertz waves is quite limited and the detection of flaws is strongly affected by the angle between the electric field direction of the terahertz waves and the intervening fiber directions. A refractive index (n) was defined as one of mechanical properties; so a method was obtained in order solve the "n" in the material with non-conductivity. The usefulness and limitations of terahertz radiation are investigated for the NDE of FRP composites.

  • A stripping voltammetric scheme for the determination of osmium, based on the adsorptive accumulation of osmium in the presence of hydroxylamine, was described. Cyclic voltammetry was used to characterize the redox and interfacial processes. Optimal experimental conditions were found to be a stirred 0.05M hydroxylamine hydrochloride solution(pH 1.8), accumulation at -0.65V for 60s, and a differential pulse mode with a scan rate of 10mV/s. The detection limit was $6.3{\times}10^{-8}M$(12ppb) with the optimal condition.

  • This paper presents a new ZVS-PWM high frequency inverter. The ZVS operation is achieved in the whole load range by using a simple auxiliary reverse blocking switch in parallel with series resonant capacitor. The operating principle and the operating characteristics of the new high frequency circuit treated here are illustrated and evaluated on the basis of simulation results. It was examined that the complete soft switching operation can be achieved even for low power setting ranges by introducing the high frequency dual duty cycle control scheme. In the proposed high frequency inverter treated here, the dual mode pulse modulation control strategy of the asymmetrical PWM in the higher power setting ranges and the lower power setting ones, the output power of this high frequency inverter could introduce in order to extend soft switching operation ranges. Dual duty cycle is used to provide a wide range of output power regulation that is important in many high frequency inverter applications. It is more suitable for induction heating applications the operation and control principle of the proposed high frequency inverter are described and verified through simulated results.

  • This paper proposes a three-bridge LLC resonant converter with auxiliary switches for a wide output voltage control range. This converter can be controlled in two ways to achieve a wide controllable output voltage control range of $V_o$ to $3V_o$. The first control mechanism is achieved through the pulse width modulation (PM) of the auxiliary switches and primary switching devices, while the second control mechanism is achieved through the frequency modulation (FM) of the primary switching devices that are configured to operate in the full-bridge switching mode when the auxiliary switches are turned off. The feasibility of using the proposed converter is verified by the results of an experiment with a 2kW prototype.

  • Silicon nanowire (SiNW) silicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon (SONOS) flash memory devices were fabricated and their electrical characteristics were analyzed. Compared to planar SONOS devices, these SiNW SONOS devices have good program/erase (P/E) characteristics and a large threshold voltage ($V_T$) shift of 2.5 V in 1ms using a gate pulse of +14 V. The devices also show excellent immunity to short channel effects (SCEs) due to enhanced gate controllability, which becomes more apparent as the nanowire width decreases. This is attributed to the fully depleted mode operation as the nanowire becomes narrower. 3D TCAD simulations of both devices show that the electric field of the junction area is significantly reduced in the SiNW structure.
