In order to utilize unsorted ONP, which contains leaflets (printed coated papers), to produce pulp mold, optimum conditions for a repulping process were investigated with a laboratory high consistency pulper. It was concluded that medium or high consistency pulping is necessary to accelerate the rate of deflaking of unsorted ONP. Considering flake content, fines content and pulping energy, the optimum conditions for the laboratory Helico pulper were 11% of repulping concentration and 3 min of repulping time. The repulping temperature shall be at least $30^{\circ}C$. Aging of paper slows down the rate of de flaking but in an actual pulp molding process its effect could be negligible.
There are a lot of serious problums associated with conventional pulping processes, such as kraft and sulfite. In order to tackle these difficulties, organic acid pulping of Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee and Pinus densiflora S. et Z. have been investigated as on alternative method. The acetic acid cooking of Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee achieved good delignification with pulp yields of 55-65% under almost all cooking conditions. In the acetic acid cooking of Pinus densiflora S. et Z., it was not cooked at a low temperature. The strength properties of the acetic acid pulps from Pinus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee showed the optimum with 95% acetic acid concentration at $185^{\circ}C$ maximum cooking temperature for 0.5hr cooking time. The strength properties of the acetic acid pulps from Pinus densiflora S. et Z. displayed excellent tear strength in comparison with those of the other softwoods. In the process of acetic acid cooking, glucose has been removed a little, but other sugars have been eliminated. The elemental compositions and $C_9$ formulas of acetosolv lignins from Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee were 63.88% carbon, 5.45% hydrogen and 30.67% oxygen and $C_9H_{9.15}O_{3.24}$ The elemental compositions and $C_9$ formulas of acetosolv lignins from Pinus densiflora S. et Z. were 61.85% carbon, 6.14% hydrogen and 32.01% oxygen and $C_9H_{9.15}O_{3.50}$ The Wt. av. MWT's of the acetosolv lignins from Pinus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee and Pinus densiflora S. et Z. were 731 and 725.

Thermal stability and rheological behaviors of Ricinodendron heudelotii wood were investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis conducted at a heating rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$ from 20 to $600^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere indicated that there was no variation in the decomposition of the onset and final temperature for all the polymers. The thermal behaviours were investigated at a temperature range from 130 to $0^{\circ}C$ at $3^{\circ}C/min$, multi-frequencies of 0.1-10 Hz using dynamic mechanical analysis. N-methyl-2-pyrolidone saturated specimens were tested while submerged under the same solvent. Polymers decomposition pattern during thermogravimetric analysis are similar in the radial position of the wood. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of R. heudelotii is $45{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ at 0.1 Hz. The Tg differs from the innerwood to outerwood. The Tg showed that N-methyl-2-pyrolidone saturated R. heudelotii would require low energy consumption during chemi-thermomechanical pulping.

Xylans are polysaccharides present in large amounts in cell walls of land plants. However, during kraft cooking, a high portion of hemicelluloses including xylans are dissolved in the cooking liquor. In the current trend for a more effective utilization of biomass, attention has been paid to the exploitation of xylans as strength-enhancing additives for paper. It is believed that surface xylan adds flexibility to the cell wall/fiber surface, resulting in stronger fiber-fiber joints or greater contact area between the fibers. Accordingly, there is proposal for a new pulping process involving the extraction of xylan prior to pulping, followed by their re-adsorption on the unbleached pulp. A suitable bleaching process should be employed then, which ought to does not only improve the brightness of the pulp, but also remain the effect of the adsorption of xylan on pulp fibers. The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of hydrogen peroxide bleaching on the properties of unbleached hardwood kraft pulp pretreated with birchwood xylan by measuring optical properties (brightness, post color number, opacity) as well as physical properties (tensile index, tearing index, bulk) of handsheets made from the bleached pulp. In the meantime, the influence of process variables of peroxide bleaching including bleaching temperature, time, initial pH and $MgSO_4$ dosage were studied.
To separate and utilize the main components of hardwood (Quercus mongolica) by organosov pulping (ester pulping), chips were cooked at various conditions such as; the solvent ratio (acetic acid: ethylacetate: water, 50:25:25; 33:33:34; 25:50:25), maximum temperature (165, 170, $175^{\circ}C$), and cooking times (2, 2.5, 3 hr). The pulps were bleached by the sequences of CEDED, C/DEDED, PEDED. Lignin, sugars, and acetic acid were separated from black liquor and washing liquors. 1. The selective delignification at optimal pulp yield (43-45%) was obtained by cooking at acetic acid: ethylace tate: water ratio of 33:34:34 for 3 hr at $170^{\circ}C$. But in this case, kappa no. of the pulp was not reduced under 60 points. 2. Kappa no. of the pulp could be dropped by an acetone wash to remove reprecipitated lignin a t cooked pulp. 3. The unbleached pulps had a brightness of 45-50%, whereas the bleached pulps gave at 88-93% brightness. Tensile, burst, and tear strengths of the bleached pulps were lower than those of kraft pulp, especially in tear strength. The pulps which were bleached with CEDED sequence were higher in strengths than another bleaching sequences. 4. Lignin of 90-95%(lignin base on wood)was separated from black liquor and washing liquors, while the purified sugars and recovery of acetic acid were a low. An organic phase composed of acetic acid, ethylacetate, and water was separated to a two-phase system by proper adjustment of the solvent ratios.

Hemp bast pulp cooked at temperature below $100^{\circ}C$ followed by defibration by the knife and the valley beater, respectively was mixed with softwood pulp varying the amount of hemp pulp in order to find the optimum condition for making hemp-wood paper. Both the knife and the valley beaters contributed to the dispersion of pulp fiber well. Lots of shives were found when the knife beater was applied exclusively, but the fibers were dispersed well when freeness dropped to 600 mL CSF and 500 mL CSF by the valley beater. Air resistance decreased drastically below 500 mL CSF where rapid disrupture of pulp fiber occurred. As the values for freeness and hemp fiber content increased, so did roughness and bulk. It was apparent that the tear strength of hemp-wood paper was on the rise drastically as hemp fiber content increased. Nevertheless the optimum hemp fiber content of hemp-wood paper would be 20% considering the decrease in both tensile and burst strengths as well as sheet formation.
Kraft oak lignin and ricestraw lignin from acetosolve pulping were dissolved in 50/50 mixture of tetralin/m-cresol solvent. The dissolved lignin was reacted in the pressurized autoclave which was operating at $350{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 10~20 atms of reaction pressure respectively_Hydrogen pressure of 60~80kg/$cm^2$ was exercising into the pressurized autoclave reactor to create thermochemical hydrogenolysis reaction. It was identified by GLC, GC-MS and HPLC that the alkyl-aryl-${\beta}$-O-4 ether bond of lignin was cleaved and degraded into various smaller molecules of aromatic compound such as phenols and cresols under the reaction conditions around $300^{\circ}C$ and 10 atms of reaction temoerature and pressure. Hydrogenolysis reaction of lignin compound which was done above $500^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 20 atms of reaction pressure showed that the amount of aromatic compound such as phenols and cresols degraded from reactant lignin was decreasing with newly present and increasing water out of product mixtures. It was supposed that new aliphatic compound of high molecular weight hydrocarbon is composed due to higher reaction temperature and pressure of hydrogenolysis reaction such as $500^{\circ}C$ and 20 atms, even though it was almost impossible, to identify what kind of degraded products it was by HPLC.

Thermomechanical pulping process uses large amounts of energy, mostly electricity to run electrical facilities. Thermomechanical pulp (TMP) made from Pinus densiflora also has a big drawback that refining consumes 90 per cent of the total energy used in TMP process. This study explored to draw up a way to save refining energy through different thermal treatment at the stages of presteaming and refining. Presteaming temperature was $80^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$, and $120^{\circ}C$. After presteaming at each temperature, refining was carried out at $100^{\circ}C$, $120^{\circ}C$, and $140^{\circ}C$ respectively. In a presteaming stage, steaming temperature over $120^{\circ}C$ greatly contributed to the decrease of refining energy leading to earlier attainment of a target freeness, irrespective of refining temperature. In addition, NaOH treatment with presteaming enhanced better development of fiber properties during refining than presteaming without NaOH. High temperature refining at $140^{\circ}C$ produced a high strength paper, and wood chips treated by alkali responded better to refining than at over $120^{\circ}C$. Improved softening effect on wood chips led to the decrease in shives contents but it gave no effect on pitch contents of TMP.

It is necessary to recycle and reuse waste paper for preservation of the global environment. Instead of a solid deinking agent, liquid deinking agents have been made using various fatty acids with EO/PO added for higher deinking effect. The removal efficiency of ink on waste paper was evaluated by the ERIC and brightness properties after processes of recycling pulping (sample composition ONP: OMG = 5:5, concentration 15%, temperature $45^{\circ}C$, pulping time 20 min.) and flotation (concentration 1%, temperature $45^{\circ}C$, air flow 7 L/min, time 8 min.). Also, the ink reattachment of paper was evaluated by hyperwashing. The results show that it is effective for mass-preparation to saponify oleic acid with KOH at $80^{\circ}C$ and to add EO/PO. This deinking agent was used in a paper plant, and we evaluated the brightness, color, and ERIC. The deinking agent showed excellent performance.
